I switch to tri talk when I sense I've gone too far on hiking talk. People think tris are cooler than the inanities of hiking. Plus, "swim-bike-run" is SO much easier to explain than "48 4Ks". Though people do seem actually interested in SAR talk, especially with some nice hot controversies going on in NH right now.

Speaking of, I need to go get ready for my search. See, I don't have the right pants with me in my car, so I'm gonna have to...oh, um, sorry, what were we talking about?

Dale Carnegie said in "How to Win Friends and Influence People" that people want to feel important and want to talk about themselves.  So the biggest challenge one can have is to talk about another person. 

With that said, if I'm standing-around with a bunch of Golfers, I'll talk Golf. 

If I'm around a bunch of former Military guys, we'll talk about Iraq/Afghanistan. 

If I'm around a bunch of parents, we'll talk about kids (and poop). 

But if someone brings-up Triathlons, I do my best to recruit them into the sport.  It's worked pretty well, I've got 3 newbies doing their first tri this weekend and I've got another going to get her bike tuned-up this week so she can start training with us.  But I do bug my wife with stories of training/working-out.  She tunes me out pretty good.

Guilty of this!  But only the month before bigger races. And my thinking is this, if more people know all I am doing to prepare for it, then I do not want to have a slow race, so in a way I do it to motivate me to do my best!

I was thinking about this today. A couple people likened it to listening to others talking about their kids. They feel obliged to ask, then sit through the tedious boredom of smile-and-nod listening.

I'm wondering if you've ever actually, oh, I don't know, listened?

I've learned a lot about my coworkers, past and present, in hearing their random daily ramblings about their doings, their families, kids, sports, whatever. It certainly is a heck of a lot more interesting than knowing someone only as a job title. Plus, I learn new stuff, and sometimes get to do cool things (ocean sailing, etc.). I mean, I don't really care about every little details of little Lily's potty training exploits, but I listened, laughed, commiserated, and was able to (hopefully) give real support when little Lily ended up in the hospital overnight.

My wife has accused me of this. Fortunately, my friends haven't. I try to keep talk centered on others as much as possible, so I don't become "that guy" as stated before. Apparently this has led to a deficit, which I can only correct by telling it all to my wife every time I see her I'm trying to find something else to talk about with her - maybe climbing? (just joking, honey)

Just say `We're going to talk about triathlons 80 percent of the time we talk. If you want more, I'm OK with that. If you want less, you'll get nothing and like it. It's all or nothing with me, baby.'

Well she IS Air Force, not Navy. Navy pilots like to talk about themselves much moreso than USAF pilots. I've seen Top Gun, I know what's going on in the world.

That's the funny part, many like to brag and talk their friends' ears off about tri training/racing even though they barely put any work into it. It is like they do it just so they can portray themselves in a certain way with their friends. Of course they are free to brag about anything they want; I just think is rather amusing that in many cases those doing the bragging are those doing barely any work which make it look like they are desperate to embellish their accomplishments.

I personally barely talk about it with my non-tri friends unless someone asks me directly about, though I love listening to tri-geeks talk about themselves; it makes for funny stories...
