I leave everything in my trunk, zipped up in my bag, so it helps a lot.

Now, when I open the bag when I get home after the car has been baking in the Las Vegas sun all day?  That's a unique kind of smell.

Nope, because I don't have a car.

Like someone else on this thread, my dog doesn't seem to mind and I'm really not looking for approval from anyone else. scott

Approval? I'd think it's more about common courstesy to your family/friends who ride in your car, not approval.
But of course, to each his own.

That'll teach cheapskates not to say to you, "Let's take your car!"   :-)

Yes.

Sadly, x3.

I have a convertible, so I try to leave the top down as much as possible in order to air it out.

cusetri - 2009-07-30 8:19 AM Zalinski: Went a little heavy on the pine tree perfume there, kid.
Tommy: Sir, it's a taxi cab air-freshener.
Zalinski: Great, you've pinpointed it Step two is washing it off.

That's gonna leave a mark.

There is some funk in my car that is evident on hot days - but since I run and bike from my house, I don't think it's from that.  It might be the funk leftover from diving and driving back with a wetsuit that drips in the back of the SUV.

My daughter's car is the worst.  She rides horses, and leaves her riding clothes and shoes in the trunk.  Occasionally, she has a bale of hay in there as well.  She once forgot about a basket of apples that rotted in the back.  So it stinks of a mix of rotted fruit, hay, and horse poop.  Lovely.  Febreeze did nothing.

A few weeks ago my girlfriend told me that my car stinks.  I didn't notice anything unusual.  Well, I had it in the shop the last four days and I just picked it up.  Man, my car stinks!  Got used to the sweet smell of that rental.

A couple of years ago, after a longish ride, I inadvertently left a bottle of Sustained Energy in the back of coredump's car. He didn't know it was there either, until it got hot outside and it started to ferment.

The fermentation (?) forced the nozzle on the bottle open slightly, and it leaked all over his carpets in the back of his car.

It was the most awful smell I've ever smelled. Like fermented vomit. Or worse. It took weeks to get the smell out. Not sure how he finally did it.  I almost want to gag just thinking about it. Yell

KSH - 2009-07-30 10:39 AM  Sorry, can't relate. I workout after work... so I got straight home and nothing sweaty/wet stays in my car all day. Not this year at least. Last year if I swam in the morning, I made sure to lay my bathing suit out in the car so it would dry.

x2.

My car only has the slightest funk (and that's according to my wife who has a bionic nose).  If I have to leave any workout clothing in my car for longer than the ride home, it comes out of my bag and I either hang it up in the car, or lay it out flat to dry.

FWIW, I think that leaving it in a bag or crumpled up just creates a breeding ground for the bacteria that makes the stink.

Reminds me of Seinfeld where Jerry's car smells horrid and they think it was from the Valet.  They think it is body odor, and they are saying "When the "B" leaves, shouldn't the "O" go with it?

Anyway, my car stinks.  My daughter does swim team, and we live like 5 minutes from the pool.  The locker room consists of one shower and one toilet and a sink, so rather than wait in line for the showers she just wraps up in a towel and I bring her home to shower.  I tend to do the same when I swim there.  I also get back into my car after running.  We do put towels over the seats, but still.  Also it has rained non-stop here, so the car has been wet from the elements so it is starting to smell like mildew.  When it stops raining, I plan on shampooing the carpet and the upholstery, because I do get a little embarrased when people ride in my car.

same thing here.
swim suit chlorine smell, but as a long time swimmer I love that.
wet towel, dry towel, wet towel (same one until it stands up alone)
running shoes, not too bad (according to me)
work out clothes come out every night after the work out so no smell for long
gym bag...smells like the locker I shove it into at the gym
perspiration...I drive around Las Vegas everyday in over 100 degree, walk around in the same temp and then drive somemore, so I am soaking wet most of the time...good thing I drive alone.

drickamer - 2009-07-30 10:44 AM Funny timing of this thread - my wife took my car grocery shopping and forgot a pork roast in the trunk for a week!  (I don't drive my car every day)  The car smells like I have a dead body in the trunk.

One friend of mine suggested Febreeze - nope, only slightly covered up the smell.

Another friend who cleans up crime scenes suggested vinegar - nope, didn't work either.

Now my car has the unique smell of vinegar, febreeze, and decomp.  I've pretty well decided I'm going to have to trade it in as a clunker.

I remember years ago my dad got a great deal on a large chest freezer--free. Why was it free? Because the previous owner had let a bunch of meat thaw and rot in it. When we got it, it was still full of water that smelled like rotten meat. Stunk up our backyard for weeks and made us all want to puke. He was determined to save the freezer and tried everything he could to get rid of that smell. Nothing worked and he finally got rid of it. Ugh. That is the worst smell. I feel for you and good luck!

Yes, my car reeks. But not because of tri stuff.

I have my search and rescue gear all over my car - backseat, trunk, right now the passenger seat. Most of it is clean or clean-ish, but my pack lives in there, too. Which I take hiking almost every weekend. And I sweat a LOT. And then, I found out the very, very hard way that if I leave my very full pack on its back, it squeezes all the water out of my camelbak. And into my back seat. Nash-tah!! I'm still airing out the car from that one. Also just got back from a five-day backpack wherein it rained almost every day. Also still airing out from that (and finding stinking bits of gear leftover from the trip hiding out back there). Unfortunately, I just got back from a search before I came to work tonight, so my nasty, stinking boots are in there. It's gonna smell GREAT in the morning!

gearboy, hear ya on the horse stuff. Worst is when you don't realize you've got a nugget stuck to the bottom of your boot and it falls off in the car. No, I take that back - worst was a sweaty western (all leather) saddle from the stallion. Boys stink! Good thing I like horsie smells.
