I did my first 5k 8 years ago.  It was the day after I got to puerto rico and was not acclimated to the heat and humidity.  I remember thinking that my shoes were melting on the road! It pretty much sucked, but I finished, don't remember my time, but I am sure it was fairly slow.

I remember that day because that was when I met some triathletes and decided I wanted to give that a try...

Mine was 11/2004. It was also my 1st race ever. I trained specially for a 5K, and broke 21 mins (20:40). Fast and flat local race. I was pretty jacked afterward!!

Still my PR - but hoping to break 20 next weekend in another fun local-type race.

My wife signed us up for a 5K last Sunday, I ran and she walked it. I have been running off and for a while now. I used to run all the time but lost my motivation, IK am remotivated now not oly to complete my first tri next year, but to also complete a marathon as well. MY wife on the other hand is extremely overweight and has been walking for a while but the furthest she had gone was slightly over 2 miles. Well on sunday she walked her first 5K in 1:04:28, she told me beforehand that it would take her 1 and half hours (suprised her). I did it in 27:34, which I did not think to bad since I really did not prepare for it too much, I thought. I knew I could run 5K but I thought it would take around 30-35 minutes, I was hoping for a sub 30 minute time, which I did get. Now my next goal is is sub 25 minutes. By the way Kelly is already planning for her next 5K on Halloween. Her goal is to break the 1 hour mark. She is hooked, she is a racer now. She says she 's not because she is unable to run, I told her "you finished last , but you finished. There is more to racing than just beating other people, strive to improve your best time!" She says that when she loses the weight she wants, she would llike to do a tri, I told her when she does she'll have a trainer, by that time I will have completed my first. Hopefully the first of many!

My first 5k, in June of 2007, was my first race of any kind since XC in Jr High. It was a women's only race, me and 350 of my closest friends. The route was a combination of paved roads and trails, gravel trails, and grass. About 1.5 miles in I twisted my ankle on some broken pavement and took a fall. I got up and finished the race with a PB. Then I realized just how badly I had screwed up my ankle. With my first triathlon about 5 weeks away, there I was with a moderately sprained ankle. Now, I try to avoid races that involve mixed, unpaved surfaces.

At my first 5K, I weighed about 240 pounds and was not quite sure I could actually do it.

I saw a Dad with a double jogging stroller, and thought, "well, I should beat that guy." Ha! He was so fast that he was out of eyesight pretty quickly.

Then there was an older woman who would jog a minute, walk a minute, but she was wearing a heart-rate monitor or something that was beeping the ENTIRE TIME. I resolved to beat her, and I did. And I wasn't last -- a handful of walkers took that distinction.

Did my first 5k early this spring in Canada.  It was -10c that day.  Part of the run is basically on ice except for a very thin car tire track.  I remember there were faster/better runners trying to pass me on that section but end up falling back because of the slippy ice.

Thank you so much for sharing this story...I have been lurking on this thread because I have my first 5K in 2 weeks...and I was beginning to get a bit disheartened as everyone had finished in under 30 minutes and I am going to be closer to 40 minutes finishing (although you don't mention your time so maybe you were done in 30 minutes too) But anyway it makes me feel slightly better that someone else was BOP in their first race.

kromanowski - My second 5k was last year's Trick or Treat Trot! My first was the Pumpkins in the Park and I finished just under 38 minutes.

My sister and I were just discussing this on Sunday... before I ran my first marathon!

My first 5K was in 2002. It was a Thanksgiving Day turkey trot... and I trained 8 full weeks for it. Finished in 38:XX... I was beaten handily by a runner dressed as a turkey, a runner dressed as an indian, and a runner dressed as a pilgrim. They all loped past me at around the 2.5 mile mark.

I stopped to take 2 GU's during the 3.1 mile course. I carb loaded the night before. I thought I was going to DIE when I finished. I was like an episode of the "Office".

I don't think I was last, but I was pretty close.

To this day I'm a slower runner. I've just learned to accept it! My 5K PR is 27:58... but I'm convinced the course was mismeasured. I think my PR is probably more in the 30:00 range.

The important part is that you are out there running. Gettin' it done. Kiss

I HATE running. But you gotta run if you wanna do a triathlon. I started training in March of this year and raced my first 5k in may. I went from not being able to run a mile to running my 5k in 26:05. I was thrilled! Getting over that hump of wanting to die while running was the hardest. I have a 10k this weekend and my first half mary in two weeks. I would never have thought that I would run more than two miles consecutively. And a 5k seems so short now! I don't hate running so much anymore. And of all three disciplines it has actually become my strongest--probably because it's the one I was most afraid of.

My first 5k was a turkey trot and I think I finished somewhere around the 38 minute mark. It was fun but I was definitely half dead towards the end of it. I ran 3.2 last night just around 26 minutes so losing weight and more training really does work!

Is there actually a point where you stop wanting to die while running?

My first 5k was this past May 2008 in Trier, Germany! The race just happened to fall on a day when I was there participating in a two week study abroad program. Let's just say I had not trained whatsoever, so I planned on participating in this once in a lifetime opportunity by jogging for a bit and walking the rest. I guess the adrenaline kicked in and I ended up running the whole way. I was slow and finished in 32:30, but was happy that I finished and got some really unique hardware as part of the 25th anniversary of the Trier races! Running through such a historic city on cobblestone streets for my first 5k is something I'm not going to forget (although I wouldn't necessarily recommend running without training)!

My first 5k was a couple of years ago, running with my then-6 year-old son. We finished at around 33:00 with him 'beating' me in a final sprint. We've done a few since then, and he's down to 24 and change. Now, I'm running with his younger sister.

It was "Turkey Trot" in Boston 12 years ago. 17 degrees and windy as heck. Froze my buns off. My buddy being a bad ran in shorts. It was still a lot of fun and a good memory.

The BEST 5K for me is still the New Year's Eve run in Central Park. What a way to start the year!

It happens...I finished in like the top 8% of the field in a 10K this weekend and a guy pushing a stroller still breezed past me just before the four mile mark. ::sigh::

I ran my first 5k (first race of any kind, actually!) 2 years ago in early April. It was a small event at the high school which is near me. I was living by myself in my fiance's house while he worked at a temporary assignment during the winter and I told myself I would do it. I woke up the morning to a cold rainy day and rode my bike over to the race by myself. I hoped to do it in under 30 minutes, but was surprised to find my final time 28:20 I think. I don't ever run with a watch so never really know how fast (haha) I was running, I just knew that alot of beginners run around 10 minute miles. I was pleasantly surprised with my results. I got a free nice longsleeve t-shirt and then rode my bike home, stopping to get flowers from the fire station on the corner that they were selling for easter. I rode home from my first race with a backpack full of tulips and a new race shirt on.

I am really glad I chose to do my first race completely on my own, without knowing anyone and no one being there. I felt like it was totally my own thing, and it just made me feel really happy with myself and my performance.

I have only done two 5k races out of all the races I have entered, one in 2003 and another in 2005. But were little local things, and I get my best (equal) finish of a race in the earlier one, 9th overall with a time of 19:30.

Strangely each event has not been run again!

Sorry, but I honestly don't remember the time! It was before I was on BT. I think somewhere in the neighborhood of 46 minutes.

And, actually, I'm BOP in *every* race. But I have so much fun out there that I really don't notice that.

My personal best is 35:41 now, and I have a lot of hope about going under 30 minutes if I lose more weight.

I did it!  My first 5K ever was yesterday.  We lined up at about 10:55 and it started raining...I started off a little faster than I should have...my adrenaline was really pumping, about half way through I really needed to slow down some.  My goal was to finish in 35 minutes or less...I finished at 33:52...I was very satisfied and I certainly have the bug...I had a great time!

On a side note...my 14 year old daughter (who doesn't train at all) woke up and decided to run with me...she finished 10 seconds ahead of her dad...33:42...I should have tripped her!!

First Half-Marathon is in 2 weeks...wish me luck!!

Hey all -  I did my first 5K yesterday and it was great!  Crisp, cool, windy, sunny.  Finished in 36:44 thanks to my husband who pushed my pace until he peeled off to finish his 10K.
