Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ok, as some of you may remember, last year, having only ever run a maximum of 6 miles, untrained and untapered I ran a half at Mooseman as a last minute relay in the HIM. I did it and it was fine - I had fun. my run is definitely undertrained going into Patriot HIM next week - doing it anyway - as then I will train more for Timberman! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sure, you'll finish. The last couple of miles will probably be ponderous and filled with annoyances at the most trivial of things... but you'll finish okay. I would say, though, that if your LR pace is 9ish, and your longest run is 7ish miles, adding only minute may be a bit unrealistic. Especially if you want to do the race "for fun". I'd say not set a time goal at all, go out VERY VERY VERY easy...and hang on for as long as you can. And then go get yoruself an ice bath immediately following. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() sipe - 2009-06-10 9:22 PM this would be a "fun" run for me. Mostly worried about finishing. Not set on the finishing time. I guess I will crank two more long runs this week and next and build to 9-10 miles and see how it feels. Anyone else do a half marathon with this little training. Me! I injured my IT band while training for my first half. My longest run pre-race was 7.6 miles. My orthopaedist said that as long as I had no time goal, a build to 3 runs per week of 6 miles each would get me to the finish line. He was right. I ran the first 10 miles at or above my long run pace. It was the Disney half and I seeded myself in the back and did not sweat when the first mile came in at 12:30. With 5K to go, I opened up the speed and went flat-out the last mile. It was awesome. I think my finishing time was around 2:15. I had residual soreness and stiffness, but no adverse effects except that my feet swelled terribly because they weren't used to that long of a run. So, I think you can finish the race, but start really slowly (your forever pace, just above a walk) and re-assess at mile 10 to see if you have anything left to sprint it in. HOWEVER, please note that going into this race, I had run regularly (approx 3x per week) for approx 4 years minus a few months for pregnancies so that base might have made it easier for me so adjust your plan as necessary. Good luck - hope you have a fun race! Edited by Mrs. brown_dog_us 2009-06-11 12:43 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yes, you can give it a shot. With your training, I would suggest not setting any kind of time goals - especially only adding one minute per mile. Something like this, think negative split. Go out first 3-4 miles say at 11 min/mile pace, if feeling great then maybe drop down towards 10:30 pace to take you 3 more miles to halfway; if struggling already then stay at 11 min/mile pace. At this halfway point, again see how you are feeling. It is important that you are very comfortable here since this is now your race (and normal run distance). If still feeling good, look to 10 min/mile pace to cruise for a while. Then as you close in the last couple of miles, adrenaline and the thought of the end should carry you home. That should bring you home in 2:15 - 2:20. But again, don't concentrate on the time. Enjoy the experience. I have stepped up quick for races in the past year, and while I completed them, I did not enjoy them. Experienced pain and frustration as I hit various mileage walls that I had never trained for or through. So, give it a shot if you want. Do not try to get a long run in beforehand (too late now, you need to be thinking of resting your body.) Dress well for the race. Remember nutrition and hydration. Take advantage of any pre-race stretch clinics, and especially if any sports massage services are on site to help get your muscles ready. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() hey, i recently did a HIM with minimal running training leading up to the race (thought i was biking and swimming). my long runs were around 6 miles, i think i hit 7 once. the run portion of the race went way better than i had anticipated, it hurt unbelievabley bad form miles 9-13, but it went well. are you soley training for running or biking and swimming as well? i know the biking and swimming i was doing had a large role in me getting through the run. as mentioned earlier, i think you'd finish fine, just miles 9-13 won't be the most pleasant |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Try to get a nine or ten miler in this weekend then taper down, but last year I built up to 60 per month (with 9 the longest) from December to April, then had a great run for my first 13.1 race in May... I would bet you are in the 9:20's ... write back if you go. But you won't know if you don't go! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So... I've been very bad about my 1/2 IM training. My longest run was in februaryish at 6.98 miles. My weekly mileage has been fairly low, lower then yours. A week and a half ago with my training buddy we ran the 1/2 IM run course that we will be racing. We did it unsupported. I felt great until mile 12ish then fell apart. But finished. I'd say it's doable. |

I hope you took that as a cue to ramp it up a bit! ![]() |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have decided that I will indeed do the half mary next weekend. I have decided that I will enjoy the race and the challenge that it offers to my fat body even if I do some walking in the later stages. I believe that I will approach cautiously at about 11-12 min pace to start as suggested in an earlier post. I am only competing with myself and for this event the challenge is the distance not the time. There are two Gel stations on this race course. I have never used Gels as the longest race I have done was a Sprint Tri. Should I be worried about consuming these during the race or am I unlikely to react negatively. |

![]() | ![]() I just sat down and tried to come up with scenarios why you should or should not do a half and frankly all roads led to the same answer...do it, nice thing is you know you will be able to do it better later. Just enjoy doing it and later you can beat the mark. Of course if ever you feel you are injuring yourself, drop out rather than set back (rare). No pressure at all this time around. Obviously you are under trained but...many of the best practice runs come through racing a race that you do not expect your best finishing tme but rather your best stimulus to improvement. |

It was the downhill that wrecked me and I thoroughly expect it to wreck me again. At least I know what I am getting into. I might just walk down the hill. Running down it sucked bad. Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just finished my first last weekend up in Vermont. My training had been pretty hot & cold over the last few months. A few good runs of 6-7 miles then a few where I could barely get thru 2-4 miles. I am 225-230. The weekend before the half mary I got a long run in of 11 miles & just figured I could suck it up for the last 2 miles. I had wanted to do 1 more medium/long run Wed before the Half marathon but blew it off & ended up getting in an easy bike ride the day before. I finished without stopping in 2hrs 20 minutes. I felt great for most of the run but the last 2-3 miles were drudgery. Ultimately glad I did it & looking to doing more. No shame in having to run/walk a little of it if you have to. I didn't stop because I was scared I would have a hard time getting going again & made a point to drink/pour plenty of water over myself to keep cool & hydrated. Not sure if this helps but it worked for me. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats on your finish. What pace did you start at? Was there a strategy you stuck to for your pace/splits? What is your approx. 10k race time? You are about the same build as me, so your advice might be very appropriate for my run. |

I'm glad to hear you are doing it! I read all the posts and I think you can easily do it with one 10 miler before race day. Sure it's gonna hurt in the last few miles and you will probably be sore for a few days after, but if I avoided races because of that I would still be running 5k's. Don't forget to post how you did. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good to hear you are going to do it. I ran my "best" half marry with 15 mpw and a long run of 8 miles one time 3 months before it. I say best only because it was my last official half marry. I have run the 13.1 in other races and training runs and was faster but as for official times go that one was my best.. Maybe I like pain, a year after that half I did my 2nd full marry on 10-15 mpw and a longest run of 14 miles. It was not a fun race but I finished it. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, the half marathon is in the books. I went out at 9:45 pace and felt pretty good but there is a long, long, steep hill that goes from mile 2.5-mile 4. I ran walked the steep sections but I latched onto a girl at my pace around mile 3 and she pulled me to the finish. It poured raining the full race and lots of thunder and lightning (really cant believe they didnt cancel). I had a nice enjoyable race and really only struggled for the last mile and a half. My finishing time was in 2:20 and I feel pretty happy about it. It was a tough half for my first and I feel like I ran is smart and had fun. Thanks for the advice from my original post. |

![]() | ![]() Daremo - 2009-06-10 9:38 PM agarose2000 - 2009-06-10 9:25 PM You actually might be competitive in the clydesdale division, believe it or not, if they have one. It has been my experience in running races that there is no such thing. It is only multisport that designates larger sized athletes as such. Daremo- A few running races do have them but it is rare. I ran in a 5 miler that had one this winter. Agarose2000- there are several 200+ lbs who can run very fast. 2:15 is a nice time for a clyde or AGer in most races but would not be competetive in the clyde division of a 13.1. Plus, we are nice to draft behind. OP- its your first, 1/2M, whcih you call a "fun race". Why put a number on it when you are not properly trained. If you want to run it, then do it. Just dont go crazy and hurt yourself, as others have said the last 5K will be a challenge. Congrats great race and goofd idea run/walking parts. Edited by jsklarz 2009-06-20 12:33 PM |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It was a heartbreaking moment in my running career, when after eating my feelings all of 4th year of med school and consistently placing well in the clydesdale division of a whole bunch of running races, my training started to cause that weight to drop off. Now i'm just another average schmoe in the regular division. Enjoy clydesdale-ness while you can, sipe! Also, awesome job on the half mary. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Do it! For fun! Walk if you have to, but finish. I did my first half last year with no run training. I simpy said I was going to do it. I signed up and had a few set backs when I planned to train. I ran 8 of the 13 miles and walked some. Also, had a broken rib , plantar fasciitis in both feet, and a head cold the day of. My wife said "don't you think God is trying to send you a message not to run today" My reply, "No, he is testing me to se if I will" 2:45:13 later, I was elated and now I have 3 sprints under my belt and one Olympic. Do what your heart tells you but your head has a say also. Good Luck! |
