Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I applaud the commissioner for making the decision. Like all decisions this will be probably be challenged in court. Standby for the hearings and testimony related to the whole mess. I'm guessing that if Sean Payton truly stands to lose $8 million he will challenge this ruling. Stand by for the real outcome. |

If it was a team-sponsored illegal activity, why isn't the TEAM penalized as well? Two draft picks, and the loss of head coach. That is a team punishment. And I said this always goes on.. there have always been incentives for plays... or some players wanted to knock another player out of the game... but ya... this was over the line. the organization, the team managment, bounties of players, people, not game or position... it was over the line. Not cool at all. Ya, I have to agree. Usually the players themselves handle this. It is their livelihood. They want to keep playing and keep making money. But when you have one team going "rogue" rolling dirty... ya, you have to lower the boom. I think the assistant head coach also got suspended for 6-8 games as well. meaning....WHO IS GOING TO COACH THE TEAM FOR THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON?!?!?!?! also, GM is out 8 games too. not sure how that works.......

Even weirder is that YOU'VE BEEN SUSPENDED for the first eight games, Dave. That's right-- you're not allowed to watch any NFL games for the first eight games of the season. Goodell is really bringing the hammer down. |

I just didn't see it as a big deal when there are other ways to make more money if that is your gig. I have heard of big money for incentive plays... like 10-20 grand for a pick 6 in a playoff game. You know, good incentives for game changing plays that teams reward players for. So $1500 for a knock out, or $1000 for a cart off didn't seem like that much... the organization and backing by management to go after specific players... huge deal. |

A lot of people are saying that the Saints got what they deserve, well, what about all the other teams in the league that are still doing it (but haven't gotten caught). I was curious about that too. I have not seen how many fines were handed out to Saints players... Harrison was the posterchild for hits for a while. Guy could not run at another player without being fined. The League said this was ongoing for a while, so were they keying in on the Saints and finding a lot of uncalled for hit even if they were not "illegal". And yes other players may do it, but the level of organization and backing by management at the Saints is what sent it over the edge. Then the claims of covering it up makes it even worse. You know you are going to get hammered at that point. Fans love big hit, but fans and players alike do not like key players out for the season. Players do not like careers ended. Scandal really is bad for business, and bounty to take out key players is really bad for business. There was no other way for this to end. If it is done in secret between players, we will never know, when it is done in front of cameras with organization by head coaches... ya, they got what they deserve. |

I don't recall which article I read it in today, but Goodell made all of the teams sign statements declaring that nothing of this sort is going on. Also, think about the punishments he meted out today. Do you think anyone wants to risk that? Especially with the written statements now. I'm betting that if it happened again, the team could expect to see even more severe punishment. What coach wants to face a season long ban? |

Payton and the lot got off easy...and they owe my Vikings an NFC Championship title! Not even necessarily mob-type people. ANY outside influence is bad, even if you just pay enough to hang a banner on the chain link fence during camp. Pete Rose is banned for life for betting on games, and he only bet that the Reds would win! If this whole outside influence (in college, they'd be called boosters) thing is real, it's almost on Pete Rose levels, not quite, but that and the 1919 World Series are the only scandals that come close in my mind. If it's just a bunch of guys colluding on bounties, hurting the "sanctity of the game", it's not such a big deal, comparatively.
Sure, we're only talking $1000, $5000, $10,000 to millionaires, but its not about the money - money isn't a motivator. It could be about the recognition from their peers, the challenge, etc. |

Like everything else, the act may get you in trouble but the cover-up will kill you. Some interesting things I heard... The Saints coaches and management have the bounty program IN WRITING! There's a paper trail. Very stupid. Lots of evidence for the league. The league is being targeted with several lawsuits from former players regarding not informing them of the dangers of head injuries and little attempt to enact rules to prevent them. They have to come down hard on the Saints to prove for future legal battles that they're trying to protect the players. Even after the league told the Saints to stop the bounty program, they kept at it and simply tried to cover it up and hide it. - I'm surprised the penalities weren't even harsher.

I am surprised by the rather small fine and the draft pick losses. It will be interesting to see what the fall-out is with any of the players. The Patriots were fined 250k and lost a first rounder for spygate. The Saints are only getting fined 500k and two second rounders. I would at least double the fine and take two first rounders to really send the message. I am not a Belichick/Pats fan (as a Browns fan, I see BB as one of the reasons we lost our original team) but I think this is much more severe than spygate and deserves a much harsher penalty. I don't see Williams coaching in the NFL ever again. I agree wholeheartedly that the pending litigation played into the mind of Goodell in handing down the punishments. |

I don't think the two have anything in common at all! What the Patriots did was simple harmless cheating (trying to read the opposing teams' plays) and they got caught. It's like in NASCAR when a team gets caught for some engine modification they tried to sneak through and got caught. Yeah, they're wrong, but teams have been attempting little cheats to give them a slight competitive advantage for years. They got nailed and punished for it. Part of the game. But the Saints were openly paying players to take out opposing players! That's like paying your NASCAR pit crew to run over pit crew members on other teams and put them in the hospital. Waaaaay different IMHO. I think the Saints penalities should have been ten times harsher. I'm surprised Goodell didn't ban Payton from the league for life. Seriously - in MLB they nailed Pete Rose to the cross for life a heckuva lot less!

I am saying that with spygate the Pats gave up a first round pick (if they had not made the play-offs it would have been a second and a third rounder) and a $250k. For this the Saints are only fined $500k and lose 2 second rounders one this year and one next. I think those team penalties are weak. I would have at least doubled the fine on the organization and taken first round picks away. They don't have a 2012 round 1, that's fine take their 2013. As for the coaches and GM, Belichick was fined $500k personally with no suspension and served as both HC and GM. Payton has been suspended for the entire season and forfeits his 2012 salary of $7.5M his personal cost is 15Xs what Belichick's was. I think that is appropriate punitively and to serve as a further deterrent. I also said I think that it is much worse than spygate and the penalties should be much harsher than those of spygate. I think we are pretty much on the same page here. |
