Didn't we already have this thread?

ChrisM - 2005-08-22 5:13 PM

next 2 books are Jarhead by Timothy Swofford (accounts of the Gulf War)

Oh, I just heard that Sam Mendes, the guy who directed American Beauty, has just finished filiming the adaptation of Jarhead, and that he's pencilled in to direct the adaptation of The Kite Runner. I thought that Jarhead was quite good, though graphically disturbing. I think what was disturbing was the casual emotional violence among the Marines themselves, not during actual combat.

And thanks to whoever recommended the Feynmann book; that's going on my "eventually" list.

On my nightstand right now:

Hendrik Hertzberg, Politics

Ngugi wa Thiong'o, A Grain of Wheat

Salman Rushdie, Midnight's Children

I swear to god, I've been reading Midnight's Children all damn summer. Soooo slow.

Just finished Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Pretty good, but dark and somewhat depressing. Looking forward to the next one. Don't know what I'll read next.

I just read To the Edge (I think that's the title. I cannot see it from here and I am too lazy to actually get my butt up and look at it) about a man who ran Badwater (135 mile ultra marathon in Death Valley) very inspiring. Makes me grateful for only 90 degree days.

I won't have time to read for the next couple of weeks because of the cruise sewing so I really enjoyed the book.

That's a great book!

I'm reading American Pastoral by Philip Roth

(I'm two thirds through all of the Pullitzer prize non-fiction winners.)

Yep, I refer to Pulitzer and Booker lists when I'm hard up for something to read. Always reliable.

Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte

It's a bit dark for my taste, but it's ok. The biggest problem I have is trying to decipher the dialect of the servant Joseph. Holy hannah, that is tough.

Heathcliff, it's me, your Cathy... sooo coooold. Was that Kate... whatshername Bush? Kate Bush. Need to google.

Who else did a Wuthering Heights song? It's on the tip of my fingers...

Edited to add:

Bingo! Kate Bush. Love this song. Haven't heard it in years.

Wuthering Heights

Out on the wiley, windy moors
We'd roll and fall in green
You had a temper, like my jealousy
Too hot, too greedy
How could you leave me?
When I needed to possess you
I hated you, I loved you too

Bad dreams in the night
They told me I was going to loose the fight
Leave behind my wuthering, wuthering
Wuthering Heights

Chorus

Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy come home
I'm so cold, let me in-a-your window

Oh it get's dark, it gets lonely
On the other side from you
I pine alot, I find the lot
Falls through without you
I'm coming back love, cruel Heathcliff
My one dream, my only master

Too long I roam in the night
I'm coming back to his side to put it right
I'm coming home to wuthering, wuthering
Wuthering Heights

Chorus

Oh let me have it, let me grab your soul away
Oh let me have it, let me grab your soul away
You know it's me, Cathy

I finished Harry Potter & HBP by JKR and Click Clack Moo Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin.

I'm moving on to Giggle Giggle Quack (Doreen Cronin) and back to HP & Goblet of Fire.

A little light reading. I can't take anything too seriously.

Just finished "To the Edge" about one man's journey to and completion of Badwater.

Really good book - totally put into words a lot of what I feel about endurance sports.  I strongly recommend it.

Just finished "The DaVinci Code"... Not quite sure why it's a best seller. It should probably have been called "Dirty Little Secrets of the Church for Dummies." Nothing like a crapola fiction wrapper in an attempt to make history exciting. I'm glad I borrowed it and didn't spend any money on it.

Happily awaiting the arrival of "Ordinary Wolves" and I've also just finished "Swimming to Antarctica" by Lynne Cox. Very cool book.

I just finished Between a Rock and a Hard Place. I am now working though several books on my summer 2 week break.

Under the Banner of Heaven by the same guy who wrote Into Thin Air. It's an interesting read about extreme religious groups.
Nightmare in Wichita: The Hunt for the BTK killer.

I am working on a couple publications in these areas. So, the student in me is reading.
The Biomechanics of Sport Techniques by Hay
Homestasis and Thrombosis: Basic Principles and Clinical Practices
I will say this last one is a "real page turner". I would rather be in the dentist chair than deciphering this information.

You're the second person to mention this series in the last week.  Do you like it?  I'm not usually a big fan of the Fantasy genre, but I really really liked the George RR Martin series (the 4th book is set to come out in Nov).
