I've had the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 for a little over a year now. I'm running the Android Ice Cream Sandwich and haven't had ANY issues.

I bought it as my "travel laptop" and haven't regretted it yet. I did purchase an external bluetooth keyboard and a "USB Dongle" for it, but that's about it.

With the dongle, it connects in the power charging port and provides a USB plug. From here, I can elect to charge it, plug up a USB camera, or even plug in a thumb drive. The thing is, when I plug in a thumb drive, the galaxy can read off if it and use it as secondary storage.

My tablet is 16gb, but I have another 64gb thumbdrive that is on my keys, so honestly, the capacity is quite large.

I also use my google account for just about everything. It syncs with the tablet. All of my caledar appointments, email contacts, emails, photos (stored on the cloud to save space on the tab), and even documents.

I can skype with it (front/rear cameras).

I can take photos/movies with it (front/rear cameras).

I can take photos with my phone, sync via bluetooth, and poof, photos are now on the tablet almost seamlessly.

It came preloaded with a version of compatible office software (word, excel, powerpoint).

I can't really thing of anything it can't do that my normal laptop would do.

Plus, the price has dropped much, much lower than the ipads.

My son just got a Google Nexus 7 and it seems very nice. He uses it constantly. The price was right.

I have an iPad, basically only use it to read the news with breakfast. Nothing really wrong with it, just can't find a good use for it as I have a top-of-the-line ultrabook that weighs less and is a full computer.

eta: flash is not supported on either the Apple iPad or Google Nexus 7. Something to consider while the long slow transition to HTML 5 occurs.

Wait 22 days and get the microsoft Surface.  It runs windows just as a PC, has full USB capability, memory card capability and you can do all of your garmin/camera work, use all of the office products and have multiple programs running.  Even though it is a tablet...it's functions as a full PC.

Plus:  I can't wait to see iPad users plugging their ipad into the surface to transfer data.

or at least wait until it goes on sale, rumours are the price point might be unreasonably low.

Ahh the Microsoft Surface. The "iPad killer" that still has no price and no battery life specs. Right now it's vapor ware until they release that information. I'm going out on a limb here and predicting its Microsoft's next Zune.

Vaporware?

It's in production and releasing in 17 days.  How is that vaporware? Vaporware is an idea that hasn't been put onto paper or designed yet.

As an iPad user who has held it and worked with it on a pretty deep level in design/beta, I give it MAJOR props and will not be failing any time soon.

17 days...yet still no battery specs or price (haven't looked today). Yes I find those two things very very important to call this an ipad killer. I think it's interesting as well, but until those two things it's a non-issue. Going to the extreme would this be an interesting product at $1200 and 3 hrs of battery? I'd think not. $499 with 8+, then yes maybe.

That Note 10.1 sounds pretty awesome.  Does anyone go to school with their tablets?  I was sort of looking for one that I could use to store my massive textbooks on, jot lecture notes down on and occasionally show off my photography.  I have played with the IPad a bit and I really enjoy it for work but with how proprietary they are with everything I seriously doubt that I would be able to view my books and put down some notes.  Any ideas?

You can read books from every store on the ipad (ibooks, kindle, nook etc). You can also download all sorts of spiffy note programs. The App store has literally 100s of thousands of different apps.

I keep leaning toward iPad, but only because they seem to have the million apps and the longer and more supported by the public.

I need to go into a good store that has both iPads and many of the others, and really look at the differences.  Is there such a place in the Omaha, NE area?  It is the closest major city in my area.

ETA: The transformer is an android device--which I like, as I can use apps I already have, and can use stuff from Amazon, Samsung, and Google Play stores. I also like that it doesn't force me to use all the apple stuff (itunes, etc.).

I know some folks cite lack of choices of apps as the reason they go for apple--which has for sure the biggest app store. But honestly, I can't think of a single app I've wanted and not been able to find android-wise.

I am pretty sure you can do this at Best Buy, and there is a store in Omaha.

I'm trying to figure out why all the talk about USB when you've got cloud storage left and right that is so much more convenient and accessible?

Are you seriously going to edit your pictures/music/movies on an iPad?  I wouldn't, I'd edit them on my computer.

I use my computer as home base for any real processing.  My phone, pad, tv, pod, etc.... are just for viewing and all can be synced up through various forms of cloud storage.  Occasionally I have taken a picture with my phone and needed to edit it and have and saved to my other devices, but I wouldn't have missed it had it not been there.

Look at dropbox and sugarsync and google drive (among many others) to link up all your devices.  It's less time than a flash drive and safer.

As far as recommendations go, given your initial indications of use (reading and internet surfing and e-mail), I thought the kindle fire might do everything you need it to do.  Cheaper option too.

I have an Ipad2, and an Ipad3.  But, when I went to buy a tablet for my FIL last Christmas, I bought a Toshiba Thrive.  IMO, IOS and Android are not that different for most people.  Especially if your use of the product is dominated by email, web surfing, photos, etc.

I like my Ipads - a lot.  But what I liked about the Toshiba was the full-size ports: USB, SD, etc.  With it, my in-laws can pull the SD card right out of their camera, and insert it into the Thrive.  All of their pictures are right there.  They can use USB devices directly, without having to buy adaptors.

And, the big kicker - it was less than $300 at the time.

Pictures have actually been the biggest struggle for me with the iPad.

I would like to bring it on vacation and download my photos occasionally as a backup and to preserve storage space (although not as important now with huge memory sticks).   I also like to blog when I travel and I have no other way to get the pictures from my phone to the iPad, so I need a device that has a USB port. The iPad has stayed home, even though otherwise it would be great.

There's no way, after spending 500+ on the ipad would I buy a $29 accessory (that is so ugly) to hook up my camera.

Assuming phone is android?  With iCloud there are a few solutions available.

first option: photo syncing b/w android and iOS devices  http://www.phototransferapp.com/

second option: Dropbox has an auto upload feature that will make the any pictures taken immediately available on all your other devices that have the Dropbox app.

third option: only if you have a mac at home would be to set up an Automator action to download and upload anything going to or from you photostream account.

So, I don't use the cloud or any other outside storage.  Why is the cloud a better storage option than storing your own data?

Because it is off site?  Do you really feel safe that nobody is getting access to any of your data?

For the use of a Best Buy...  There is not one that I could go into in the Omaha area and get any questions answered.  I have already been to them and nobody wants to help, I can read the information that is on the display just like the people in the stoore.  They are worthless in the help area.

With all of the hacking and releasing of credit card information, user account info, etc, it would seem that a thumb drive in your pocket would be the safest method of storing information.

You mean the wonderful folks in the Council Tucky BB couldn't help you out??

Why is cloud better?  It's really an individual answer but for me, 1) I carry enough stuff around anyway, I don't want to carry a flash drive when I have my phone right there 2) flash drives can break 3) you can lose one 4) they don't work in the computer I'm plugging them into 5) they cost money (cloud services are free to 5 GB) 6) it's available anywhere and everywhere I go, I don't have to remember to bring my flash 7) I don't have to carry a cord

security? Well I figured we were talking pictures here or things that "Would it really matter if someone got a hold of them?" That's what I store there: photos I liek for now,  a movie I want to have for now, a document I want to get tomorrow at work, a file I want to share with a coworker, etc.......  For my own long term storage I store on the hard drive of my computer and back up to a separate Hard drive.  But I would not be afraid to use a cloud based back up system like carbonite.  In fact we do offsite back ups for my company.  I would think the more immediate concern would be crashes on their end that would wipe out your data? Those are not a concern because they have redundancy drives for that. So yes I feel safe.

for me,

1) I carry too much stuff to fit a stick of chewing gum-sized device in my pocket
2) I break them
3) I lose them
4) My computer can't read them, for some strange reason
5) $8 is a hardship after I spent $600 on my iPad
6) I'm forgetful
7) I don't understand how USB works and think it requires a cord

Oh. Then I can see why cloud would be the better choice for you.

Bripod,

The children that work there (Council Tucky location) want to play games while they are there and they probably know the most, but don't want to speak to an adult that asks serious questions.

I tried the ID 10 T's out at 132nd and Center-ish area and they just were worried about their clothes and shoes and who was texting them about the party that night.

Do you have any good Omaha locations to talk to somebody and see the differences?

seriously? c'mon man.  Why you gotta be like that?

He asked for reasons why it'd be better.  I gave him some.  Maybe you prefer flash drives I happen to not.  I'm just trying to help the guy out and let him know there are other simple options out there that he can take advantage of.

But yes, I do lose them.  I get like one use out of each flash drive then it's gone to who knows where.  The rest are all issues I've had to deal with due to others irresponsibility.

I'm just giving you a bad time. I had a Toshiba flash drive actually conk out on me after a month of light usage! I lost another one so some of your points are valid. I just restated them the way they sounded in my twisted little mind

Flip my best suggestion would be NFM but instead of texting teens you'll have to wade through salesman-speak when asking your questions.
