Extreme Veteran 368 Incline Village, NV | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? famelec - 2007-11-07 1:02 PM FWIW, most triathletes aren't very fast swimmers (by swimming standards, anyway), and the faster swimmers tend not to win the triathlons..... That's me! A swimmer by training and I always do fine during the swim, but back of the pack for the bike and run... Do what you want, at whatever pace you can and have fun doing it! |

Champion 7821 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? Around 1:50 or so. I've had splits that were in the 1:30's. No flip turns for me, either. I've tried them a few times and always wind up on the bottom of the pool somehow. |

Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? Generally around 1:45 per 100 in training sessions. No idea what a standalone 100 would be for me right now. Back in HS (i.e., 30 years ago), I was down around sub-25 for the 50 free, but I can't remember my PR for 100. |

Extreme Veteran 787 Glendora, CA. | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? To Aaron's original post, I just did a 1000yd time trial during my swim workout on Monday. It was a personal best and a break through workout for me. I swam 1:38 / 100s. I'm usually a 1:50 / 100 swimmer. To Spokes: My personal opinion is that some people are gifted in being able to propel themselves through the water. Some of it is that people have that "swimmer's build" ....tall, thin and able to slice through water. I lost on both of those aspects so I rely on technique. I was slower than a dog paddling in a squal. I took a 4 hour swim clinic followed by a couple of private lessons and was consistent in getting in the water 3 days per week. During the clinic, they videotaped our stroke. You might consider looking for training opportunities in your area that are similar. With respect to giving up the sport....let's talk...... do you enjoy doing triathlons? If so, who the heck cares whether you're last out of the water. Enjoy the fact that you are out there and competing! Don't race against others, but try to improve your personal times if that is what you want to do! This comes from a 51 year old mid to lower middle of the pack. When I am mentoring new triathletes, I tell them to go out and have fun.....PLEASE don't loose site that this is a fun (yes competitive) sport. Just my two cents! |

Elite 4504 Columbus, Ohio | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? My first and only Oly distance was sans wetsuit and I averaged just over 1:30/100. My normal training session 100 is usually around 1:40. I am sure if I kicked it up a notch I could hit 1:00 or less just never tried. Like Doc... I am okay at swimming I am not good at the biking and running yet but working on it. |

Master 2355 Houston, TX | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? I can hold 1:30-1:39s per 100yds in the pool up to 1650yds. But toss me in open water in a race and I do 1:50s. But the fastest I've done 100yds is 1:19.. I really have no sprint in me, I do my 100 repeats around 1:25 and my sprint is 1:19. |

Extreme Veteran 523 Brambleton, VA | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? HIM pace is about 1:30 per 100m. Which is about my pace training in the pool. I guess "pool + wall + no wet suit = OWS + Wet Suit". I have yet to try a 100m all out . . . maybe I should give this a try. BTW, everyone passes me on the bike . . . so I am going to buy a new tri bike ps: sub 1 min for 100 back in HS (not to be done again!) Edited by swiss tri 2007-11-07 3:39 PM |

Expert 626 | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? You all are fast. Me, at best about 2 minutes per 100 m, once with coach yelling at me about 1:50 per 100 yards. Actually he promised me if I could break 1:45 I could swim in the lane with the guy who's a model, but guess it wasn't enough motivation for me, 'cuz I can still seem him fine from the slow lane. Anyway, I don't know why I'm not faster. I wish I knew, it's not for not trying. Edited by BabsVa 2007-11-07 3:38 PM |

same! I can average about 2:00 in the pool, but on my last race, I stopped a ton, was freaking out in the water and averaged 3:30 in the Olympic. |

I was worse in my first (and only) tri. About 4:00/100. I resorted to breaststroking vs. the crawl because of the buffeting from other swimmers and 2' waves, I was burning energy like crazy and as it was was, it took me nearly 38 minutes to swim a 1/2 mile, and I really stumbled to transition. I'm always exhausted when I come out of the water; its weird. Yep, that was me also. I ended up doing a lot of breastroke just so I could navigate. It was my 2nd OWS ever so it is something I need to work on. |

Regular 77 Manassas, VA | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? I thought I was the only strange one who did OWS as fast as the pool! This was my first year and I was about 1:45/100. I could hold this pace in the pool for 2400yd (my longest swim). I'm pretty similar in OWS in a Sprint (as long as the buoys aren't being towed around by a kayaker). Of course, my best ever 100 flat out was about 1:28, so I think I have a lot of room for improvement. I'll be concentrating on swimming this winter to improve my time. My problem is that I've been swimming since I was 5 and have never had any technique coaching beyond kids swimming lessons. I'm 34, so that's 29 years of bad form drilled into my head. |

Champion 5575 Butler | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? spokes - 2007-11-07 4:03 PM Remember that pool times do not equate to OW times. I am actually IMO faster in OW now than in pools and I enjoy it more now. 6 months ago I did my first OW swim with a training group of about 50 people. The water was cold but I had a wetsuit and I figured I would be fine. They said to go and I put my face in the water and I took it right back out. I was determined to swim the 1/2 mile no mater what. Luckily I had a wetsuit so I knew I would not drown so I floated on my back , dog paddled what ever I had to do. The amazing thing was there was still alot of people behind me so that kept me going. I think the 1/2 mile took 25+ minutes but the water was really calm. I got out of the water and started cussing my self out and decided to go do little swims out and back but used a nose plug. After about 2 little 50 yard swims I decided to do the 1/2 mile loop again since the kayak was still there. I went the whole way around doing freestyle, don't know the time but was probably around 15-20 minutes. After that I decided OW training was necessary so I meet a few BTer's at the same lake including my BT mentor and we did a few swims and I was one of the faster people. Now I love lakes (lets not talk about oceans, I have no desire to try). mcole158 - 2007-11-07 1:55 PM spokes - 2007-11-07 4:31 PM mcole158 - 2007-11-07 12:39 PM My 100 time in masters swimming is between 1:50 - 2:00. I'm always exhausted when I come out of the water; its weird. Yep, that was me also. I ended up doing a lot of breastroke just so I could navigate. It was my 2nd OWS ever so it is something I need to work on. I've put a lot of thought into whether its worth working on. The thing about swimming is if you're not good at it - like for people who are not good at cycling or running - you don't see much return on the work that you put in. I'm also not fast overall - I'm better suited to do long distances - so its really kind of a waste for me to do sprint and oly tris as I'll still do poorly even though my FITNESS is ahead of where my speed is (if that makes any sense). I think I would place much better in 1/2s and fulls, but, there's the issue of the swim cutoff. Its very frustrating. I like the world of triathlon, but there seems to be a hierarchy of 'respect' for those that do well in tri being somehow 'better' than those who only do dus, or single sport races. I came to this sport as a cyclist and found it somewhat more welcoming to newbies than the world of cycling, which is full of arrogant a-holes, for the most part. But I've found running to be even far more welcoming than triathlon... it certainly is a lot cheaper LOL. But I don't want to give up on it yet. I guess what I am trying to say is just keep at it, you have to build confidence. I am not saying to sign up for an IM as right now you would have a hard time making the cutoff but you can work towards it. As I suggest get TI (the dvd) that seems to help. |

Extreme Veteran 357 Ft. Myers, Florida | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? I am another slow swimmer. I do hundred intervals in 2:15-2:20 and average close to 2:45 for longer swims. This past summer I did 2 sprint tris with a 750m OWS and a 5K run. In both races my 5K run time was actually faster then my swim time. Who says the swim is the shortest part of the race? I am on my 3rd swim coach and have finally found someone that I like and can work with. She really knows what she is doing and absolutely works with the 'individual' athlete to find the thing that will work for them. Even though swimming is all about technique it isn't necessarily one size fits all. I also tried TI and a Master's swim program neither of which worked at all for me. I have an additional problem in that my shoulders are so tight that I have difficulty getting any where near full extension on my stroke. I am working with a massage therapist for that. The swim is going to get my full attention this winter. I WILL tackle this thing. |

Master 1324 Rochester, NY | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? I typically swim around 1:45 per 100 meters. I've been working on my stroke recently, and yesterday, i was doing about 1:40 per 100 meters during a 30 minute straight swim. I don't have a competitive background and I don't do flip turns. In recent tris, I've typically finished between the top 10th and 20th percentile of all swimmers. The thing about swimming is that its ALL physics. Spokes, having read your posts on this thread, I'm sure you're in plenty decent physical conditioning. I can almost guarantee that you are very non-streamlined in your swim stroke. Swimming fast is all about being streamline. Perhaps this could be something to focus on for you. Figuring out where you are getting non-streamlined in your stroke. Good luck with it. And stick to it. You'll be glad you did. |

Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? One thing to bear in mind in terms of return on training is that the swim is--sadly, for those of us who do swim reasonably well--proportionally less important to overall time in a tri than the bike or the run. Take a look at the results for the pros at Kona and see where they placed overall on the swim vs. on the bike and the run, for instance: Of the top 20 finishers, 8 placed below the top 40 overall in the swim (three were even out of the top 150 on the swim), but not a single one placed that low on either the bike or the run. Struggling badly and lacking confidence in the swim is no fun at all, of course, but struggling badly on the bike is no fun for a longer portion of the day. |

Veteran 231 Sunny Oregon | Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100? I have yet to complete my first race and am another struggling swimmer. My free stinks! The only thing I have going for me is a breaststroke that I can do 100M in about 2:30/min up to 1500M without wearing myself out. I'm working on the TI materials that everyone has recommended and am doing some of those drills to help the freestyle come a little more naturally. It's coming along, albeit slowly!! |
