Thank you all, I knew everyone here would understand.
I contacted the RD to see if I could switch to the Midlothian and apply the entry fee there, or apply it to next years race, and am waiting to hear back.
I am not ready for an Oly yet, but would love to do this race as an Oly next year and if I am lucky a HIM the year after.
Thank you all for all of your kind thoughts.

Unfortunately, they won't be able to transfer your entry to the Richmond Sprint Tri because they are run by two different organizations.  Patriot's is a Setup Event and the Richmond Sprint Tri is a Richmond Multisports event.

Very sorry to hear for your loss.

Verga, So sorry for your loss.  As everyone had said, Family and friends come first.  There will always be another race.  Hopefully Set Up is understanding and will allow you to carry over the fee for next year.  Greg is fantastic and know that he will do what he can.

In the past I have recieved an e-mail with the particulars before the race. I'm begining to think there isn't going to be any such e-mail or maybe I missed it somehow. I have no idea where to park? What time does the transition area open? It looks to me like the swim start is a good distance from the transition area. How are we going to get from transition area to the swim start? I have several family members attending does anyone know of a good spot for them to watch?

If you go to Setup's website and go to the event page, there is a link to the Event Details for the event, a PDF which should answer your questions.

Thanks Newleaf. That's the info I was looking for. One more question for those of you that have done HIMs. Do some people get off their bikes at the bottle hand off or am I going to have to grab a bottle from someones hand as I ride?

I think that most people slow down and grab the bottle (not get off the bike).

But if you want to dismount, there's nothing wrong with that.  Do whatever is in your comfort zone.

When I ran the water stops for the first HIM. The girl scouts handed the water bottles out and almost all stayed on there bikes. The girls finally got the hang of it at the third water stop

Just stay calm.  My best advice for first timers is to keep your heart rate under control as you start the swim.  Save your adreneline for the end of the race.  Nothing like being 500 yards off shore when you "hit the wall" because you got over excited, breathed too hard, and wore yourself out.  Just get excited after the swim and there won't be any panic attacks.

I have to second crazyyella's advice about staying calm. The first tri is not one to win it is one to learn. This is my 4th year doing tri's and i am still learning. Go out with a smile and have fun! Good luck all this weekend.

Usually a wade start.  Sometimes they let you dolphin dive to a certain point, depends on water conditions.

I've seen dolphin dive starts in a video but I don't think I'll be trying it on Sunday!

Last year we had to go out pretty far because it was low tide. I haven't been out there for a few days but with high tide being in the late afternoon I'm guessing that the water will be low. Dolphin dives are a pretty slick way to get out there quicker.

Getting pretty excited!! Weather this year should be FANTASTIC!! Look forward to seeing everyone!! I just hope that with my AG that there will be a few people out running when I get there. Thank god there is 2 loops for the run, this way I'll get to try and chase everyone

at 8 am it is very shallow for a VERY long time.  at 5:30 pm it's deep and swift.  setup says that there will be a marking where you HAVE to start swimming or DQ.

Anyone know if there is a planned swim or open swim on Friday on the course for those that are coming from out of town? I just wanted to get a feel for the water (yes, I know that it will be wet) and also spotting markers on shore for end of swim.

I am not reading something correctly on the race details & course map. The race details indicate the buoys are on your right when swimming but the map looks the opposite. Did they change the direction of the swim?

It's my understanding that the start is near the 4H dock, which is north of the swim exit.  The long course will just go farther out from the shore than the short course.  The exit is just north of the ferry, near the picnic area.  Not sure if the run to T1 will be on the road or around the back of the grass parking area, but it will be a pretty good ways.

Me and meh ran into the guys from Endorphin Fitness a few weeks ago, while they were doing a clinic on the course, and they seemed to confirm all of this.  On another trip, it had rained the night before and the water was up at least a foot from the week before.  We have been getting a good deal of rain lately, though I think it is forecasted for clear on race day.  We both also received a couple small cuts on our feet from the oyster shells.  No biggie though.
