I think you were in the wrong, but I understand your point.  You may know what's best for everyone (especially you) but it comes across a little selfish.

If I was coming into a pool and needed to share a lane, I usually look for the BEST swimmer to ask to split.  That way, I think I have a better shot at sharing a lane with someone who knows how to do it properly (looks around or is aware, knows how to hug the divider when passing, etc...).  If someone told me 'no' and to jump in with a water walker, I would be put off as well.

Should have let them in your lane and did your thing.  It would be apparent soon enough to him that he was getting in your way and may chose to move on his own (if he in fact DID get in your way).

Agreed.  The pool is for swimming, not for chatting...  But any distraction instead of staring at the lane line for 60-90 minutes is a blessing.

X2. Always pick the cute girl lane over the hairy guy lane. No brainer. I am happy to share, but when the pool is full, I ask if they want to split or circle. I don't ask if I can swim in 'their' lane. That's not up for discussion.

Ikanuba - 2009-07-01 1:34 PM Hi All

Had a situation arise today at the pool and was wondering what is the proper etiquette for this scenario:

1. 3 lane / 25 yard pool at the gym. All 3 lanes have someone in them.
  • Lane 1 (larger lane) - Lady doing slow laps, look like a steady, decent swimmer.
  • Lane 2 (smaller lane) - Lady doing some sort of water rehab, just walking etc.
  • Lane 3 (larger lane) - me doing speed work 100 yards at a time.

None of those matter. The key phrase is "3 lanes each with a person".

2. Guy comes to the pool (turns out he's not a very good swimmer) and asks me while I'm swimming to share my lane. So I stop and tell him I'm working on speed skills and if he wouldn't mind using the other large lane, since he just wants to do slow laps.

Why does his swimming skill matter? (And at 2:00/100 race pace, you're hardly in a position to be criticizing). And did you know that he wanted to swim slow laps when he asked? And if he did, what does it matter?

3. ??? He chooses the middle lane, which is smaller, instead of swimming in the first lane which is larger and it turns out, his form is not the best.

You accomplished what you wanted, he didn't get in your lane. Why even bother caring where he goes or what he does? And does the fact that you think he's a poor swimmer make you feel justified in not sharing?

4. We meet up in the locker room (apparently the guy only did like 20 minutes of swimming anyways, wtf???) and he starts yelling at me that I was rude and he's going to do the same to me next time, yada yada yada...

While I wouldn't have yelled at you, you were a bit rude. All you have to say is "If you don't mind me doing speed drills, sure, share the lane". The ONLY time I might tend to lean towards refusing is if I'm doing butterfly sets, and even then, you can one arm it for the time you are passing each other. And again, why does it matter how long he goes? Maybe he just finished 90 mins on the treadmill and just wanted to paddle around...

Was I wrong in asking him to use the other lane?

Pretty much, yeah.

This country would be a lot better place if people would go read this poem again.

One of the first times i was doing lap swimming i ran into a similar problem except that i waited until somebody was done working out and then i jumped into the pool, after about 5 mins i am doing a lap and someone was in my lane, i did not say anything because i had no idea what the etiquette was until i asked a friend of mine and was told all about pool etiquette. That is why i swim later at nite, around 10 pm or so, usually empty in the pool.

Actually, when I first started swimming at my gym I often found myself swimming with the same girl. I knew she was a triathlete, and she swam for Cal on scholarship, and KQ2X.   If it wasn't for talking between sets, i may not have joined the masters class on her urging, then done my first tri, then met her boyfriend who became one of my best friends and training partners, then presided over their wedding 3 years later.

So chatting isn't all bad

In my pool there is no such thing as a lane to yourself.  Yep, it's either circle or split (if only one other person, which never happens).  I see a lot of posts about having to share a lane and I think it must be a great luxury to mostly have a lane to yourself and to only occasionally have to deal with sharing.  I'm jealous.

To the guy who started the thread, I think you and everyone else agree that you were wrong. If I would have been that guy, I would ask you politely and then share your lane regardless of what you said. You are obligated to share the lane. Your swimming ability has nothing to do with it.

Ikanuba - 2009-07-01 4:04 PM The lanes are just barely large enough to swim side by side, so we could have done it, but it's not compfortable.

Not sure about the whole locker room thing. I apologized and tried to reason but he just wanted to make sure I knew that if I ever wanted to swim in his lane, I was out of luck!

you were in the wrong imo...when the lane is large enough you can split it doesn't matter if the guy is slow as molasses.  you split it....sounds like you just don't like it well too bad and need a little pool etiquette.

Well at my Lifetime Fitness pool, there are hairy, fat dudes. Back hair... the works.

AND... the water aerobics class walks in the lane next to me... this one lady had legs as hairy has her husband's. GROSS!

I used to run with a buddy of mine and we'd look for the elusive 8 minute booty. 7 minute mile booty was too hardcore and rare but if you could run behind 8 minute booty you'd be guaranteed a good workout and a good view. Good times!
