I'm not going to pile on you, you got the message. I think most people on this board are pretty cool, don't let this post deter you.

However, I will say that as a Clyde I would have "asked" but when you replied, "would I use another lane" I would have replied, "you know what, move the f$ck over, I'm swimming here".

Chill out guy... it is all in how you ask the question... For someone who is new to triathlons (your own admition) go back and read your first post... You pretty much attacked the guy and said his 20 minute swim was not worth your time. Your whole thread was pretty flamming...

x2. You came off as completely elitist (I refrained from using that word in my posts but since it's been thrown out there...) because post after post you KEPT COMING BACK to the fact that this guy was so slow and ONLY swam for 20 minutes. That is elitist and rude and arrogant, whether you intended it to be or not. I think KSH was merely pointing out the irony in your statements, given your own times. Speed is all relative, and like someone else said, we're all on different paths in the pool (or road, or trail).

The peeps here on this board are definitely helpful, but I see you've already discovered that they have no problem calling those out who are clearly in the wrong - and have a hard time "getting it."

I'm going to ignore all the ranting and raving on EVERYONE'S part and chime in a bit on the original topic.

It is ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAY proper to ASK before barging in on someone's lane.  But along those lines, it's a silly swimming dance and the answer should almost never be no.  I say almost never meaning 99.9999% of the time someone asks if they can split you should say yes.  Asking is just a formality really.  I can't think of one good reason you shouldn't be able to split your lane.  I will admit that if someone asks me to circle (so we would have at least 3 swimmers)  and I'm doing a TT set or sets on specific intervals I would ask them if one of the other lanes would work better.  Because circling doesn't really work well when the swimmers in the lane are not doing the same workout.  It just doesn't.  I'll circle all day long if I'm just doing an easy swim or drills or whatnot, but it's a recipe for disaster if everyone is doing different workouts.

I'm going to defend the OP on one thing...he said he was doing "speed work".  He didn't say he was swimming fast.  He said he was doing "speed work".  Speed work doesn't mean going fast...it means working out faster than your normal pace and possibly trying to go on specific intervals.  Just like I said above with the circling...when I'm doing speed work...I can't have people in my way.  It would be like being in the middle of a bike time trial only to get stopped by a crossing train or something.  Hence why I do not like to circle if I am trying to hit specific paces or if I'm doing a TT.

Flame away at me if you want.  I don't care.

Exactly. I would have never pointed out his swim times, had he not come off as some Olympic swimmer who needed to do his speed work without having someone SLOW in his lane.

I respect anyone who is out there doing it! No matter what their speed is!

I'm a relatively fast swimmer, and I never say I won't split a lane with someone because they are SLOW and ONLY swimming for x minutes. Lately I do swim workouts that last 1-1.5 hours... I see people come and go that entire time. Most people don't swim more than a few minutes.

And to the OP- I did say that the guy was pretty rude to go off on you in the locker room.

yes you do care... lol I know you Jenn and you care deep down inside...

Personally I think it is funny that some people on here think a lot of the posters were rude... Go look at some of the other forums and post the same question... talk about RUDE....

I think we're kicking glue by now (as in the horse is so dead and has been turned into glue and we're still kicking it) but I think the OP and I go to the same gym and I think I know the slow guy he's talking about.

If it is the same Slow dude, I let him swim with me a week ago after I had just finished my ~1200m warmup/drills set and started on my speed-work.  He got pretty upset that I was churning-up the lane (which we split by the way) and when I was finished with my 700m or so of speed stuff and was catching my breath before doing some paddle work, he stopped and said "are you done splashing-around in the lane?"

I'm a pretty good swimmer, I finish toward the front of my wave, but I'm also a big guy so I do create a lot of wake when I'm doing 25m top and bottoms or 50m on the tops.  But is "Slow dude" alright to say what he said to me?

I think it went around and came back to bite him.

I'm with OP on this one.  But only because I think I know the "Slow guy" that he was talking about and he's pretty much a jerkus.

I think there are wrongs on both sides...you *never* say no if someone asks to split your lane (notice I said split...I still maintain that there are times you can possibly refuse to circle) but "Slow dude" shouldn't have gone off the OP either.  It wasn't called for.

Uh, he needed to GET OVER IT. Just like he needed to GET OVER the OP not sharing his lane. It was nuts he confronted him in the locker room about it.

So what if you create wake? It's a pool. Waves are made. If he didn't want to swim with you "splashing" then he needed to move or get out.

Hey Ikanuba,

Sorry to perpetuate this thing, but I read the post and I wanted to offer two ideas that I think are new to this discussion:

1.  I can understand your hesitation in sharing a lane in some cases.  One thing I've done is said "I am going to do x,y,z workout.  Do you think that will work with what you're trying to do?"  For instance, if I asked to share with someone who was freestyling, but planned to do breaststroke later, I would like the warning.  If you had said to him "I am going to do my speed workouts, which requires me to maintain a certain speed (so passing is hard), but also rest during sets.  Do you think we can manage to stay out of each other's way?"  The other guy might have said "Sure, we can split lanes and it won't be a problem."  He might have also said "thanks for the info, I might try this other lane."

2.  Part of the problem here on BT is that often people respond without reading through the entire thread.  That's why multiple people will often give the same reply. I don't think it's meant to be punishing, rather just our laziness in reading other responses and then accepting that the question has already been answered.

Good luck!

I've been reading as the thread gets longer and longer and there's more and more perpetuated about my mistake of implying that I was trying to judge this other swimmer. I admit it may not have come out right when in my OP I pointed out the "20 min. wtf?" and the "his form was bad and he was slow" but that was simply to explain that due to his skill level and me trying to do speed work in my lane, I politely responded if he wouldn't mind using another lane.

I would have been totally cool with him telling me to go fly a kite and I'm swimming in your lane. I also brought up his time and skill level to put perspective on how angry and wild he went off on me in the locker room. I am the last person to judge anyone as I am new to this sport and am always trying to learn from other people and totally dig anyone who is exercising regardless of skill or intensity. I was just taken off guard that this dude would freak out when he really didn't have a long workout lined up and he was only working at a slow pace. If I was only swimming for 20 minutes at an easy pace I would have been cool with someone asking me to wait until he was done or use the other lane, but that's just me.

Again - for those who might not have been reading this whole thread as it is quite long now. I DID APOLOGIZE TO THE DUDE WHILE HE WAS SCREAMING AT ME IN THE LOCKER ROOM...Everyone say it with me...THE OP DID APOLOGIZE TO THE OFFENDED SWIMMER.

Again thank you  to all the people with the helpful comments. That's what I was looking for and I still totally dig BT as a place to connect with other people in the sport. I'm totally hooked on Tri's and will probably make more mistakes along the way and all I can do is apologize, ask questions, learn and move on to the next race....

Rock on and good luck to all!

newleaf - 2009-07-02 7:58 AM So here's a post from the OP on page 1... after 8 or 9 people told him he was in the wrong...

Ikanuba - 2009-07-01 4:50 PM Thanks for the info....

I haven't done much swimming at this pool (only 3 lanes)  so I've never come across a situation like this. I tried to put myself in his shoes and I wouldn't have gotten offended either, to be honest I probably wouldn't have tried to use the lane i was in in the first place since I was only going to be swimming slow and ,for 20 minutes.

Live and learn!

Thanks Dudes...

Ok, great.  Sounds good.

But then, after that, about another 10-15 people (not counting the silliness in the middle) piled on, with one poster calling him out on his times.  What was the point of that?  He got the message.

Why?  Why the need to pile on?  His question was asked, it was answered, and he was cool with the responses.

It seems he got the message on page 1, and was cool with it.  And now here we are, on page 4.

There are many times when someone new to the site overreacts to comments/criticism from others here... but sorry, this isn't one of those cases IM not-so HO.

I think there has been enough said about this already anyways but there was one thing that struck me while reading.

How did you know when he came to the lane that he was a slower swimmer than you with a bad form? Technically you did not know and does that not imply that you already judged him before he even started swimming?

I would have been seriously pissed about that as well!!

Just my 2 cents.....

Oh my goodness.  RTFP! Read the F'ing Post!

He did not judge him before the incident!  He said he was working on speed sets and didn't want to have any other swimmer...fast or slow...getting in his way!
