Member 31 Colorado | Subject: RE: Team Persistent Pumpkins Good Morning Persistent Pumpkins! I'm looking forward to this challenge...my first one. My name is Sarah - I'm in Colorado and planning my first tri in August. I'm looking for more consistency in my workouts and I know this will be a big motivator for me. I'll be gone one week toward the end of April, but my goals are set so that I will need to get to all my planned workout sessions before and after my trip. I checked out the spreadsheet (WTG, Chris on being the first one to post your workout!) and have been reading through the posts. I'll check in daily... Looking forward to training with you all! |

Extreme Veteran 470 Horsham, PA | Subject: RE: Team Persistent Pumpkins Good Morning Persistent Pumpkins ....aka soon to be the April challenge winners!!!! My name is Linda (obviously). This is my second challenge on BT. Sadly, my team was not a winner in the Feb challenge, but I successfully completed my goal. I did not participate in the March challenge since I am really not a biker. I am currently training to set a PR this year for a 1/2 marathon of under 2 hrs. So, I am running more than anything else. I am scheduled for my first 1/2 marathon of the year on April 27th. I ran 6.2 miles this morning as a good start to the month. I look forward to training with you all! Have a great April Fool's Day! Don't fall for any foolish tricks! ; )

Expert 1022 | Subject: RE: Team Persistent Pumpkins carrie1 - 2008-04-01 5:41 AM I've never done a pool swim tri. That would be interesting. I guess there are a lot of starting waves? The pool tri that I'm going to be doing this month has a seeded start with 10 seconds between swimmers. That seems to be pretty common. |

Veteran 232 Rio Rancho, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Team Persistent Pumpkins Nice start to the month Chris. I get the same thing at the pool I go to. If I don't go early there will be 3 or 4 lap swimmers crammed into one lane so that coffin dodger aquarobics can get going. Oh well, I suppose it forces me to get up out my bed early...eh? I got started early too and got 1.5hr bike ride in this morning and to avoid the traffic I used my mountain bike on dirt trails which actually worked out pretty nice since it was a nice clear sunny morning. Even though there was a cold breeze which numbed my fingers in the first 10 mins it still felt a lot better than the thought of a 5 degree OWS.....brrrr..... GO PUMPKINS! |

I had to submit a time/100m and they will start us based on that time with a gap between swimmers then I think every 10 or so swimmers, there will be a minute or so gap so things spread out. I just started swimming lessons September 2007, so I figured I'd start off with pool tris where there would be a little bit more of a controlled environment. Then when I get more comfortable with swimming I could move to open water stuff. |

This year, I'm getting some OWS pacticing in before the race, so that I know what I'm in for. It's not harder, it's just different. |

I was just reminded at work of a few days this month were my pool access will be iffy at best for travel! Is it too late to drop it to 5000? Nope. You have until Friday to finalize your goals. |

Master 1704 Long Island, NY | Subject: RE: Team Persistent Pumpkins Hey Fellow Pumpkins...I'm kind of late to the party. My name is Tim and I am a married 41yr old father of 2 boys (3 and 3 mos). Last year was my first year of tris, motivated by my son on Oct 16, 2006 as he used a straw to imitate me smoking. I quit smoking that day, joined a gym, and have become a better role model to my 2 sons. I am a solid Clyde and an even more solid BoPer, but I have tons of fun doing tris and will keep doing them as long as they remain fun. I am training towards my first HIM in July (Musselman in Finger Lakes region of NY). I look forward to hitting all my goals and helping all of you guys attain your goals. Mine are as follows: Bike 18hrsRun 12 hrsSwim 6 hrsTim |

Master 1704 Long Island, NY | Subject: RE: Team Persistent Pumpkins CHR15 TREE - What was the problem? People around you? 'Cold' water on the face making you breathing uncoordinated??? I find getting into the water plenty in advance helps, getting my face and head in, getting cold basically, and getting used to breathing in the cold water. As for other people, it's a mind game you have to shut off from them... This is exactly what happened to me at my first outdoor tri. Water temp was 52-54 degrees and I was completely unprepared for how cold that water was, even though I had full wetsuit on. I hyperventilated my way through first half of swim. Lessons learned that day! |

As for other people, it's a mind game you have to shut off from them... Looking back on it, when I was doing an OWS practice last month, I think the biggest problem was the fact that I didn't feel like I was moving in the murky water. So, I was already last in the swim, and didn't feel like I was making progress, so I panicked. |

Expert 1014 Virginia | Subject: RE: Team Persistent Pumpkins Interesting to hear what problems others encountered in the OW. Kind of helps me know where I need to make sure I get some experience prior to race day. Anyone else wanna share? The seminar I'm going to attend is in May and I hear the location is a pretty calm beach, so it's a good place for a first OWS experience. |

At least for me, it's all about being relaxed and getting into a good rhythm. Once I figured that out last month, it became pretty easy. |

Expert 957 Charlotte, NC | Subject: RE: Team Persistent Pumpkins Some tips for OWS--if you're not fast, don't get in the front of the pack. Sounds pretty self-explainatory but you'd be surprised how many people do this and get plowed under. If you're not really fast or really confident, just hang back towards the back and/or the outer edges. You might swim a little farther on the edges of the pack, but there's less confusion and chaos out there. You'll have a better chance of staying within your plan. That's the biggest problem I see among new people at races--they get drawn into chasing other people and get out of their own pace. They redline early and then can't recover. Just race your race...whether you'll finish 1st or dead last. |
