Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have a Wii and play in streaks. I won't pick it up for a couple of months an then will play for a bit until I get stuck on a stage somewhere. I will say though that one night I played boxing on the Wii. 2 hours later my shirt is off, I'm covered in sweat and have moved the furniture out of the way. Then next morning I couldn't lift my arms b/c I was so sore. That never happened with Ms. Pacman. Thinking about getting that Wii fit pad thingy. |

. That would be funny. Do you get to ride on your trainer if you have a mount? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've been adicted to online RPGs since the first days of text-based Multi-User Dimensions (MUDs) in the mid-90's. Everything was text-based; there were no graphics. That's how I learned to type...I had to keep up with the conversation. I then branched out to Diablo, EQ, EQ2, and left them all behind for my latest mistress: WoW. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather interact in a MMORPG than vege out in front of a television...after training, of course. Edited by Hawkeye 2009-01-09 3:28 PM |

![]() | ![]() JohnDeere - 2009-01-09 3:00 PM Played Rainbow 6 on 'arena' servers for awhile. Great stress reliever. Played America's Army for awhile. Got tired of being 'jacked' by 12 and 13 year olds on a daily basis. Went into WoW with some old Army buddies (who are into raiding 6-7 hours a night). They showed me around and helped me get started. Played for a few months. Then I eventually realized that as neat as the 'world' is and as fun as the 'battlegrounds' can be; it is just a game that you shouldn't devote more time to then say.....sleeping or family. I used to love the original Rainbow 6, then Rogue Spear, then I stopped playing them for a while...picked up Rainbow 6 Vegas and remembered why I liked it so much, just beat R6V2 a few weeks ago. Fun games. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() madkat - 2009-01-09 3:15 PM xmann1102 - 2009-01-09 9:20 AM interesting thread here before i went to Nursing School, i was heavy into Everquest and Dark Age of Camelot. i spent waaaaay too much time playing and not enough time exercising or with the wife and kids. Nursing school pretty much fixed that though. i'm actually surprised and a bit embarrassed at how much time and effort i spent playing those games. i actually had some online friends that had serious personal issues because of mmorpg's....one even divorced. now that i'm done with school, i don't play mmorpg's at all. i do have a PS3 and 360 that i play regularly (about 10 hours a week). i remember spending all my extra or free time gaming, now it's just an hour or two here or there whenever i can. family is definitely #1 and then exercise....not even a question anymore. DAoC was my first MMORPG, and I was amazed at how much time that game could suck up. Fortunately, I came in near the end, and didn't really have to do much GRINDING before the opened the Classic servers and I could be on the same level as most everyone else without much work. Now we play Warhammer, and love it. I can get my murder fix with very little grinding. Or, if I want to spend an hour doing some PvE questing, it's very rewarding right away. Eric talks about how he and his wife spent a lot of time playing EQ and EQ2, and I sometimes wonder if her level of playing was what eventually split them up. But I know that gaming, like any other kind of activity can become a means of avoiding real life issues. I know people who look down on gamers, and yet drink themselves to sleep every night. And I have a family member who spends a bit too much time at the casino. And I know several athletes who have strained their relationships by training when they probably should have stayed home and spent some time with their family. Eric and I have a firm rule when it comes to balancing gaming with everything else: It sounds like you've got your priorities in order. I come home from training, then bet on the video games I'm playing online while drinking myself silly. What are you trying to say? ![]() alcoh-a-game-a-gamble-a-trainaholic? A you need is a eating disorder and a drug problem with that and you get to go on Dr Phil or Oprah. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi, my name is Andrew, and.... I used to play DAOC for an unheathly amount of time several years back, and UO in grad school. Getting married and having two small kids dispensed with any free time for that, not to mention my latest addiction. And, I jest a bit, but it's pretty close to an addiction. I've got (former) friends who literally ignore their spouses and forget to watch their kids for hours on end. I won't even get a PS3 now, just for fear that the demons will somehow get me. ;) |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My Government teacher used to play WOW during class (during test times) until he quit over the summer. And now instead of having a 3d statue(huge cut out things) of one of the characters of WOW, he took only the 7 foot tall front of it and staple it to the wall. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was in EQ from the very beginning. I really don't have the time with training to do it and well, the $300 per year buys me 3-4 pair of running shoes. In dropping the gaming for tri training I also lost 40 pounds. The EQ was a cheaper hobby overall, but ya not so good for your body and a tad less rewarding. Much more fun to tell your friends you got a personal best on a HIM last weekend than you won a roll on a sword that has Anger 6 and a stun proc on it after rolling on it every time it dropped for the past year. In those games you get 50 people together 3-4x per week to accomplish um well to figure out how to outsmart the programers given the limitations of the characters. If the same group of people got together and trained for stuff well they could pool their $15,000 a year and build a sweet training center specialized to triathlon. Now that would be sweat. Well around here 15k would do something, in other areas it wouldn't do too much. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() madkat - 2009-01-09 11:03 AM I have several triathlete/gamer friends. Balance... it's all about balance. Eric and I have no trouble telling our guildmates, "Hey, be back in an hour... have to go run." I started doing tris around the same time I started online gaming. I know that in the spring and summer, training takes up more of my time, and in the fall and winter, I get to do more gaming. It works out fine for me. My lack of training has nothing to do with my gaming. But after a long run, I really enjoy "murdering people." Totally agree. I've played WoW for three years now and granted, until I got into tri's earlier this year it was pretty much all I did when I wasn't at work or out with friends, but I still play. It's all about balance. I don't really raid anymore and sometimes go a week without even logging on, but it's great after a tough workout to log in for some PVP action. In addition to tri training & WoW I'm active in an Austin charity, am a marketing manager for a F50 company, take my dogs to the lake, date, and manage to go out with friends once a week, so it can be done. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow a WoW thread on BT too funny. I played way too much WoW until I decided to get off my butt and get back into a active lifestyle (thanks to my Dr's warnings). I still play but very little and I don't raid anymore unless I have a free day the following day. My guild knows I am training for a Tri and is cool with me dropping of early most nights. I have found balance w/my family time, training, and still playing WoW with friends I know in RL and online. It's all about priorities and learning how to spend your time wisely IMO. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've played quite a few over the last decade -- EQ, EQ2, City of Heroes, Starwars Galaxies, Vanguard, WoW, and now Lord of the Rings Online. I was very addicted to EQ way back when, but after that, the novelty started to wear off a bit. The rest of the games I never got totally crazy over, just enjoyed them in moderation. As an earlier poster mentioned, I think of it as a better pastime than just passively watching TV (which I almost never do). Edited to add: My friends who got me into tri's all play online RPGs, too. In fact, two of them met in EQ, and ended up marrying in real-life. They're still happily married, even though they don't play nearly as much. Edited by Tripolar 2009-07-12 1:02 PM |

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() I am a WoW addict, but haven't touched it in almost a month. I just realized that the reason I didn't get things done was because I played. I asked myself if I was okay being overweight with a messy house and being in Europe and seeing none of it. The answer was no. I went out and bought more than 2,000.00 USD worth of game consoles and games one day, and you know I have played maybe three or four hours since I got them. Mostly Dance Dance Revolution cause I can 'move' and actually it gets the heart rate moving. I enjoy gaming, but I enjoy living more. I now use them for rainy and sick days. ![]() |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Like was said, a WoW thread on BT?!? LOVE IT!!! I played the original EQ then gave up MMOs then got into WoW about 2 years ago. I still play to this day. Again like was already said its all about balance. I also figure a slight wow habit sure beats a going to the bar habit. Thinking of it that way, it really the healthy way to go. My biggest sacurfice for Tri training was getting rid of my TV. I Cancelled my cable early this year and haven't missed it. I also love the extra $100 a month I saved by doing so. Mark AKA: Gertruide; 80 Night Elf; Anvilmar server. |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm 25 and haven't played a video game outside of goofing off on Guitar Hero (I can play a real guitar and wanted to try it) at a friend's party and the Wii stuff with my family at Thanksgiving. I can't say I gave anything up because my old job had me working 6-7days a week all year. I quit that job for a new job that allowed me to go to night school and when bored I decided to go into fitness stuff again. I guess I don't ride my motorcycle in the mountains as much since I do a lot of races on Saturday. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just to prove I'm a gamer and game forum veteran I'll say it... HOLY THREAD NECROMANCY BATMAN! Now that that's out of the way... EQ was my first MMO, but Bards Tale on the Commodore 64 was my first game addiction. I also played WoW from launch day until this part March. I didn't give it up for triathlons, but once I started training for triathlons I filled my free time reading tri forums and training rather than logging in. I still have urges to go back, but they pass pretty quickly. I also am much healthier and sleep better than when playing WoW. Maybe not a direct effect, but not totally unrelated. |

![]() | ![]() I was addicted to WoW for about a year. I'm talking about waking up early to check/set auctions, checking the forums at work, getting home from work at 5 and raiding till 1 or 2AM. I hated myself for it. I tried to quit a few times but keep coming back. I would see friends and they would ask me what was going on, I couldn't say "Well, I got a drake for getting glad in 3v3 and my guild just cleared black temple". I would just say I was working a lot and change the subject. I finally wanted to quit enough to actually do it and I'm so much happier. With WoW - 20lbs overweight, pale and sickly, single, nothing interesting to talk about. Without WoW + Tri's - best shape of my life, tan and healthy, hot girlfriend to train with ![]() |

Regular ![]() ![]() | ![]() sdanaher - 2009-01-09 7:10 AM Funny thing.. I was reading the "what did you sell/give up for tris" and more than one was online gaming... Wondering how many of you all did the same thing (like me) in giving up tons of wasted time doing nothing playing WoW or another game... to replace it with something much healthier. I played WoW for about 3 years. I had a few epic toons that were maxed out and about 10k of gold. I stopped playing when I started training and haven't looked back. I finally canceled my account last month... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() haha, wow. Who would have thunk it. I played just about every PC game on earth between 1997 and 2004. I had a crippling addiction to Asheron's call - which was WAY better than EQ. And played WoW for about 4 months before I graduated from College and decided that I would never find a job and probably doom myself to a life living in my mom's basement if I didn't quit and find myself a job. I don't regret the decision. Nowadays I've got an xbox 360 that I hardly ever turn on, and a laptop that is worthless for gaming. Fortunately for my health over the last year I've traded one monotonous and expensive habit for another... |

![]() | ![]() Silver_wlf - 2009-01-09 6:19 AM I played a lot of games in university. I still like to play Warcraft II but I never let myself buy WoW because I KNOW that I would never get anything done. I was seriously addicted to Black and White in university - it was terrible... I still play war2 also! RU server has a decent number of gamers. |
