I voted for hitch rack, roof mounted and insides. It all depends on how many bike and how many people.

If it's just me I usually throw it inside. If it's just my bike and the family is going, it also usually means I am putting the roof rack on to use the cargo box so I'll throw it up on top. If carrying more then just my bike, or just mine but I need to space inside and we're not using the roof rack for the box, I use our hitch rack.

For a long time I was a roof rack only guy, but when I got a car with a hitch I bought a Thule T2 rack and love it.

IMHO trunk racks are a PITA compared to the other options. Only good if you can't fit it in the car and a roof or hitch rack is out.

Hitch rack that the wheels sit in. Holds 4 bikes and love it!

I transport my bike in the hatch of Volvo Crosscountry. It just feels safe back there. I recently called our insurance company to make sure if it is stolen at race, out of the car or at our house it is covered.

I carry my bikes in my Honda Element. They are safe and out of the weather I don't have to worry about somebody hitting them if they were on a hitch rack or driving into the garage with them on a roof rack. Both of those things happened before I got the Element.

2 factors: which car am I driving and which bike do I have.

My station wagon the bike gets laid down in back when I fold the rear seats.  (either bike)

His Mountaineer has a hitch rack.  However, the frame on my race bike is smaller than my road bike and doesn't fit real well.  I may have to get a different rack just for that bike.

For the truck, I take the front tire off, and slide it into the back seat. it fits long wise and works alright.

For the jeep, I take the front tire off, and slide it in through the back hatch. I do have to let a seat down, but it still fits alright.

I've set my eye on the locking truck bed mounting bracket for the back of the pickup. Just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

I'm not adding another bumper to my car!  You can bet that the day I put my bike on a rack, I'll get hit!

If it's just my bike and I'm not hauling a ton of luggage, I just put it in the back of my Vibe (aka "Matrix with a roof rack")...folddown seats with hard-clad deck = plenty of room for bike without taking off wheel.  With some luggage, I have taken off the front wheel and saddle/seat post and strapped it vertically to one side of the cargo compartment.  (Love me the multiple tie-down points in the Vibe.)

Too much luggage plus cooler and whatever...or both my wife and I riding/racing = Yakima two-bike trunk mount rack.

I bought a Toyota Rav4 specifically so I could transport the bike in the back.  Then I can bring it to work, for instance, and know it's locked up and protected.  I feel very uneasy about the safety of locking my bike to a removeable bike rack on the car.  Normally I bungee it to the side, standing up, although will lay it down and cover it with a black sheet if I'mleaving it for extended periods of time.

I can fit my bike and race gear, as well as another passenger and their bike and race gear, comfortably.  I can almost get my road bike in without removing the wheel.  Unfortunately the aerobars on the tribike get in the way of that, which is too bad since that bike is XS.

I am sure I could fit about 4 bikes in the back of the Rav 4 - problem is what to do with the passengers since the seats are down

I noticed at my tri club group ride that nearly everyone drove an SUV, yet I was only one of few who transported the bike inside.  It doesn't make sense to me...

If it's a short distance say less than 30 miles in the car it goes on a removable trunk rack, any longer and it gets taken apart partially and throwin in the car.

I have a jeep liberty and use a Saris Bat Rack that mounts to the spare tire on the rear door....
