Agreed - plus there is the peer pressure of not wanting to pull the team down, which I have always found is very motivating.

Mike,

I would not worry about the week out.  I think everyone has some form of commitments that will limit the amount of time we can ride.  I think its a Team thing, or at least that is how I read it...don't care either way but in the event it is, I could pitch in a couple extra rides to carry your weight.  Maybe double up with some night rides...I usually take my boyz (two dogs) and they would love to get double sessions in.

Take the challenge and join...

Jed

Thanks, Jed. Yeah, I'm still in as long as my team understands that I'm out the last week. I don't mind doubling up some rides; can't have too much MTBing.

That's cool with me...

I'll be honest, this is my first challenge, but I plan to just do what I was going to do anyway... Ride.  Not sure how much or how little...  I hope that doesn't bother anyone.  I'm not going to sacrafice tri training for a challenge, just sub road rides for some dirt on occasion!

But I do have some races in May!

Oh yeah, guess what!  I'm putting money down on a new MTN bike today.  That could be my secret weapon/motivation!  If I get it in time for some May riding, I might want to be on it all the time since it's new!  Great motivation....

New mountain bikes are definitely great motivation. You have to ride them and get them dirty, because if they are shiny, you get made fun of.

Riding like you planned to do is totally cool. No one is expecting anyone to go bonkers and do 5 hour epics every day in May just for the sake of "winning." This is supposed to be fun and motivating, after all!

Ha!  I know!  I will have to throw some mud on it for my maden voyage!

BTW, I did it...  Put the money down just now!  It may be here in time for the XTERRA!!!  Not sure If I will use it though.  Want to get it dialed in.  Pic is in my log...

Ha!  I'm a little intimidated with the math as well.  But I figure I ride mostly the same trails.  Once I decide what they are, then all that plays factor is how long I'm out there.

Now just figuring out what they are......

So, if I have a route that use to be an old NORBA race course.  What do you think they would average out to be - difficulty wise?

there was a race in VEGAS? or do you live in another sin city? I raced mtn bikes for many years and never raced there darn it! how fun for post partY!

obtw - im in if I can still join! time to dust off the old mtn bike! woo hoo! love riding in the dirt! thanks for a reason!

Just bought my new tri bike today, a Cervelo P3C DA...now I am going to be torn between dirt and Street.  Well the boyz can't do the Street so I guess I will have time for this challenge and the dirt.  Season opener for me is three weeks away.

I am all in on the challenge...I just think this will be fun and a good way to get to know people with like interests, albeit in cyberspace.

Can we choose stupid names for the teams like in the show Apprentice? Haha, lol!

I hope my team is supportive!  I just looked at the calendar and realized I will be in the Netherlands from the 11-15 and then home to Indiana the 20-27.  We're going to try to ride a day or 2 there, but it'll be a slow biking month.  Although, we will be in Flag twice and Show Low once...so it might be ok.

I put the names in a coffee cup and drew random names.

Team 1:
PirateGirl (Elaine)
moto_mort (Ryan)
mm5093 (Milton)
Girl Passing on Left (Julie)
Mr. PirateGirl (Zac)
offtrackmtb (Liane)
kmanus (Krista)

Team 2:
Mike The Bear (Mike)
jdorsh (Jed)
perkins_jerryw (Jer)
Akidoman (Jim)
azitpros (Matt)
wgraves7582 (Bill)

If others join in, we'll just spread them out to help even out the teams (right now we have 13 MTBers). We'll probably do team averages for points.

Challenge starts Friday! Woohoo!

Nice Team 2 - shoudl get some good rides in this weekend.

Question: In terms of difficulty rating, I am confused between A and B.  So if I am doing a very techical ride with high risk, such as a downhill with multi level drops with little room for error, I would catagorize it as an A.  However, from a cardio perspective it might actually be a C in terms of how hard you are pushing it.  So how would you rate this - happy to send pics if needed.

Thanks,
Jed

I will put down the first ride for May (at least in this thread).

I did the preride for XTERRA today and it was rougher than I had thought.  I will TENTATIVELY give myself the following score....  I say Tentatively, because Elaine did the same ride and since this is her challange, I will use the same score she thinks the ride was.

I thought the course was between an A and B for hills (It was HILLY)  AND between A and B for technical.  It wasn't that hard in what I would consider technical (obsticals, drops, rocks, etc), but lots of loose climbes and sandy washes.  I had to walk up 2-3 steep hills for several hundreds of feet.

So I will round up with the hills and say 'A' and down with tech and say 'B'.  It was 1:20 of riding, so a 'C'.

I think that's 9 poits, if I did my math right, but I will let Elaine give her report on the ride and go with what she says.

Interesting question, and I'm no expert here, but I'm guessing that perceived exertion is not part of the equation. As a counterpoint to your example, my city has a dirt trail system that goes on for miles, and we're talking a big ole "D" in terms of hills and technical. The good news is that it's right in my backyard, practically, so I can ride daily if I want and make up for lack of quality with quantity. Anyway, because it's not technical, I can hammer away as fast as I want and really get the HR going. But I wouldn't bump that up to a C due to the exertion. That's also why we go based on time rather than mileage. I've seen some technical stuff where I'm sure going 10 miles would take an hour or more. So it balances out.

BTW - On the trail system we have here I noticed that there are some worn areas off of the main trail up some steep hills where kids (or adventurous adults) probably rode up to make the trail more challenging. In order to make the challenge fair, and to make this fun for me, I fully intend to take some side trips up these hills. I'll count the time but I still won't rate the trail above a D. Sound fair?

I got an 11 point ride in yesterday due to XTERRA...  (subject to change after Elaine rates the ride)...

I was thinking about going back out today, but I'm a bit spent.  So probably not...

Good news and bad.  My job got cut back in hours so that's bad for the wallet.  However, I have more free time, so I can get some additional rides in during the week!

Sorry for the delay guys! Just got back from the Vegas drive. I'm too sleepy to go back and quote questions, so I'm gonna dump them all here.

Team names - Go for it! Yes 1 and 2 are boring so throw the creative ones out there!

XTERRA Vegas course - I'm going with A for hills, B for tech. There were definitely technical challenges on the course, but not like stuff on Bootleg Canyon (I'd rate some of those as A).

Cardio - No cardio rating, just hills, tech, time. Bill's explanation sums it up well.

When to report totals - Let's aim for each Monday.

Now I gotta find my Garmin and fill out my blog to catch up!

Yay, I have some points for the board: 10.

Did some runs at Bootleg Canyon on Friday.  No shuttle, so I gave myself an A for hills, as I rode/pushed my 44 pound freeride bike up the 1000 ft hill twice.  Also gave myself an A for technical.  I'd rate my first decent (Skyline to Boyscout) as an A - it was listed on the Bootleg map as a black diamond XC trail, with a lot of 1 foot rock drops, some into switchbacks, and some serious grade.  My second run was Snakebake, which is shown as a single black diamond DH trail (and the DH trails are definately rated on a different scale than the XC trails).  My Garmin elevation plot shows verticle lines in it, and I was on the verge of arm pump much of the run.  I will admit to not doing the three foot drop to tranny in the middle of the run...

Sorry we didn't get a chance to meet up.  But timing was pretty hectic.  I'll be honest, I was pretty beat to drive the 45 minutes back at 2:00 for the post party...  Did you go?

I'm looking forward to you race report!

I'm also glad we see eye to eye on the course.  I rated it the same as you.  Not technical per say, but lots of hike a bike sections.

I STILL have not been out to Bootleg!  I plan to get out there this month and check out some of the XC rides.  I'll leave the downhill park to you crazies!
