If you ride on the road then chances are they are illegal.

A good range of answers here.  My personal thought is that its a material risk factor for accidents.  Bikes and cars don't mix well.  So things that increase that risk factor, I try to reduce or eliminate.  Not wearing headphones is an easy factor to control.

Now, on the trainer or in the spin room at the gym, crank it up!  On the road, no effin' way.

Go ahead and wear them. But if you're obliviously weaving down the center of the bike path while I'm behind you yelling "On your left!" as loud as I can, then I reserve the right to smack you around a bit when we get to the next stop.

I never have and never will though I like my music very much, I just don't think that is the best place for it. I would rather have all of my senses dedicated to task at hand. I also don't use a HRM, Computer or any other gadget on the bike.

I don't wear them.  I don't find it comfortable and I think it's kind of annoying.  If you like them, it's not illegal, and you're aware of everything around you, go for it.

I used to be so against it...and then I tried it. Now I wear them all the time but I almost always listen to podcasts, hardly ever music.

Generally I don't ride with headphones but I am considering listening to audiobooks in my right ear only on bike paths with an open ear headphones.

In the interest of aiding in reaching 5 pages by nights end I say "nay". Just my preference. I do get annoyed at people with it too loud to hear and are riding directly in the center of the trail, oblivious to their surroundings. However, I don't frown upon people who use them responsibly.

I say no headphones on the bike and am torn between wearing them running or not.  If you want to wear them and you're attentive and aware of your surroundings, great!  If you wear them and can't hear the cougar stalking you on the trail, bon apetit!  It's your decision and your responsibility.  I don't wear headphones and I still missed the black bear on my morning commute...

I'll wear them at 5:45 in the morning on the way to work when there is nearly no traffic and most of my commute is on trail.  Later in the day on the way home and during my training rides I like to hear everything around me so I never wear them.

aquagirl - 2009-07-14 4:42 PM Never ever. Period.

x2.

I look at it this way...

First, you gotta realize, you're on a bike. Not in a car, a bike. There are so many larger, faster moving objects out there, plus pedestrians, and you're not protected by airbags. It's dangerous, you need as much information as you can get to ride clean.  2) you won't hear callouts from riders ahead of you as to trouble (car back, etc) or horns or emergency vehicles or bells/verbal warnings from other cyclists, 3) if you ever have to fiddle with the playlist to get to the next song, you're not paying attention to the road, and 4) Audio cues are one of the easiest ways to tell if you have something going wrong with your bike, like a spoke broken, issue with a fork, etc.

Lastly...A crash at 5mph can mess you up. A crash at 20 can wreck your season. A crash at 20+ the speed of another pedestrian/vehicle is season ending plus. Plus.  Why introduce any more risk into the equation?  Get a riding partner, talk a little, work a little, enjoy the ride. Leave the headphones home, or crank 'em on the trainer.

PS. I'd bet that no one that advocates an ipod has ever been in a serious accident wearing their ipod, and I'm sure that they don't wear them in their car (which, ironically, would be more protected than on a bike).

The problem with real life (as opposed to movies) is, there's no background music!

I bike with music.  I run with music.  And if I can ever get around to ordering a waterproof case for my shuffle, I'm gonna swim with music.

I do not see a safety issue.  I do not have the music up so loud that I can't hear what's going on around me.

I don't ever wear them on the bike (unless it's on the trainer). I have a hard enough time hearing with the wind noise and just wouldn't feel comfortable doing so. I wear them while running all the time. I run so slow, there is no wind noise. Just my personal preference.

I need headphones when I train. I usually leave the left one out to help me hear anything I need to on the traffic side. Just my preference. To each his/her own.

I find it amusing that if we talked about wearing a helmet or not, 99% of would say to wear one.  If we talked about riding on the correct side of the road vs riding down the center lane or against traffic, 99% of us would say to ride on the correct side of the road.  If we talked about other safety issues I would guess 99% of us would agree.

So; why is it that with headphones so many people are willing to A: break the law and B: put safety concerns aside when it comes to listening to music?

Hearing is such an important aspect of riding.  Most of our visual attention is on the road/path ahead of us, watching for obstacles in the road.  Even with the best mirrors our sight is extremely limited to what is behind us.  On top of the traffic issues you have to be careful of those pesky dogs that you will come across at some point.

Even at a low volume, earphones will severely restrict your hearing.

50/50, but I've never felt concerned about safety while wearing them. Still have my "spidey sense" and can hear cars/horns/etc fine.

I've even gone without a helmet on a few occasions...prepare the pitchforks!

Preach it brother!  I could not understand why anyone would want to train with music.  Now I use it about 50% of the time.  It bugs me when I see someone with both ear buds in.  That's an issue for me.  When I am riding with music, one ear bud in my RIGHT ear (LEFT if I'm in one of those weird opposite side road countries).

I don't know of any state where it's illegal to have one ear bud in.  Some have it illegal for both hence (earphoneS).  The irony is that I usually only hear the music when I'm not listening for other things.  I spend more time looking at my PM than paying attention to which Sara Brightman song is coming on next.

I also don't think that if you are riding correctly that riding on the road is dangerous.  It's not any more dangerous than a motorcycle or running or driving.  Higher risk of getting injured if something happens...YES.. more dangerous...NO.  I ride on the road of Atlanta all the time and have yet to be in an accident and I attribute it to owning the road when I need to and yeilding the road when I should.

A) Don't know of any states that have it illegal for you to ride with one ear bud in.

B) Do you keep your radio off and not speak to anyone in your car?  Cause that affects your safety in a vehicle because you could be distracted.

Yes, I say wear one.  Mainly because it is in the USAC coaching manual saying "You better preach about wearing it!"

But I also road years (not casual riding, road race training) without one.  My teammates gave me sh-t, but that was about it.  The only reason I do it now all the time is because I have 3 young sons and we have ingrained in them the importance of protecting their noggin.  So I do it for them.

So call me the 1% .......... I don't care if someone chooses not to wear a helmet, unless it is the law in their state or if they are racing (where it IS required).

NAY!

1 ear bud in the ear that's to the shoulder side of the road, if you must.
