mmrocker13 - 2009-08-14 11:28 AM I don't give anything up. Should I be giving something up?

Yeah. Me neither.

Me too.  I cannot think of a single thing I have given up for triathlon, except for time.  Even back in the day when I didn't have kids, I didn't give anything up, at least not intentionally.

fgump - 2009-08-14 10:13 AM Ice cream.  We always have at least 2 cartons in the freezer.  If I could kick ice cream, my run paces would drop like a rock, my swim would improve, and my bike would fly.

But I love ice cream too much

X2
ice cream makes everything better-except running, biking and swimming!

I have definitely cut back on the "bad" food and drink, but I don't think I've really given anything up... except some sleep, since I train at night.

Ah, but this thread is about what you can't/won't give up, not about what you have given up.  I have modified my life a little to maximize what I want to get out of training.  My primary goals are to loose weight and have fun.  My wife often asks was it more fun to get fat or get skinny.  My answer has been both, they were both fun just different fun.

Hello

7 weeks of training and my first Sprint is Sunday.  717 AM  Sunday AM the horn will go off and away I will go.

Now last night we had our 8th Giving Back  to the local public school district  Darius Rucker -Dierks Bentley-Hootie & the BlowFish concert at the tennis center.  Darius Rucker is a good guy, from Charleston, home town icon and the force behind the benefit.

Well  2 months ago I would have had a complete tailgate with food & 5/6 mixed drinks to get in a real party mode before the concert and then maybe a few more pops inside.

Last night  I  had two tangerrays & fresca's with some low fat chips.  I even turned down an offer of a free beer.  I still had a good time even though it rained.  So I guess I gave up excessive alcohol and loading up on food.

Kevin

I don't think we should give up stuff we enjoy for this sport.

I agree which is why the wings and blue cheese are not going anywhere

I certainly wasn't drinking too much but it was unneeded calories that I was consuming while trying to lose weight. I am fairly hyper and some beer or wine helped me to calm down and sleep better. With training I am more calm in the evenings since I am up earlier and ready for bed earlier so i found I don' t "need" to have a drink to get in a relaxed mood for the evening. So if anything training helped me give up something I was looking to eliminate already.

Sleeping to the last possible second on work days.

I am not ever going to willingly get up early to train.

My (and my wife's) thoughts exactly!  I am what I call a beer/wine taster.  I try to get a different kind of beer/wine every time I pick up a 6 pack.  Ain't given that up until we go back into prohibition!

Sleep.  I really don't get enough as it is (lifelong insomniac), so I limit the early morning workouts to no more than 3 a week...and most weeks it's just one:  a 6am swim.

tcovert, definately agree on the sleep. I am as well a life long insomniac. So i need every minute I can allow myself. I would rather not train than train in the morning.
