OMgosh, as I see all too often, patients seem to improve...then not. So very, very sad. How fortunate that her organs will give life to others.

Oh no.  I've been following your posts on her situation and it seemed hopeful and then this.  My heart just sank when I read it.  In fact I didn't believe what I was reading and then had to go back and read it again.  Our thoughts go our to her family.

My heart goes out to the family.  This is just too bad, I also could not believe what I read and had to re-read it.  I've been following the posts for the past few days and thought it looks like things would turn around.

Very sad to hear, it's been a rough year around here for swimming.  Glad to hear she was an organ donor though.  Thoughts and prayers to her family.

What to say.  I'm really saddened by this.  I, too thought things were looking up.  Many prayers are headed to her family and friends.  Be safe out there everyone.  I really don't want to read any more of these stories.

Today was terribly shocking and sad.  Although I did not know Mary well, I have trained and raced with her on numerous occassions with the Endurance House Ironman training team.

A fallen teammate, part of our tri family.  She will be greatly missed.

Some of the E House team gathered tonight for a regularly scheduled group run.  Jamie and Tara stopped by simply for support, hugs, and to say a prayer and see us off on our run.

Rest in peace, Mary.

SSMinnow - 2009-08-19 2:30 PM I wish I had better news to deliver.  I still don't what caused the incident.  I'm really sad for her family, esp. her two young children.

Today the Mary we know is gone. Her body remains and she and her
family are in the process of giving life to as many others as they
can by donating her organs. Mary lived her life to help others
whether that was her family, her friends, her patients or her
children and now her strenth will be passed on to the lives of
other through the gift of life.

Mary we will miss you more than you can ever know.

Suzy, I saw the news last night since I didn't see this until now and was shocked.  It hit harder when my wife told me that Mary's sister, Amy, works with her (but in a different department) and knows Amy.  My wife will send Amy something in respect.

Life is so unfair.

Life is so unfair.

I called my wife and got the correct name.

This makes me so, so, sad.  I can not even wrap my arms around this.  Two young children, husband and in the peak years of her life.  Surely, doesn't make any sense at all.  My heart and thoughts go out to her family and the lucky people that will get new life because of her.

My wife and kids are going to get extra hugs and kisses tonight.  Life is too short.  "Love Life" while you have it.  Every single moment.

Godspeed.

This is just not right.  I know intellectually life isn't fair, but why is it that some people can smoke, drink, abuse their bodies and treat others poorly and live to 90.  Others work hard, live a good life and things like this happen.  God has a strange way of working.

My heart and prayers go out to her and her family..so incredibly sad.

Wow, this is surprising and sad. Earlier it seemed like she would pull through. The lesson is definitely to respect the danger of swimming, and to savor each moment of life since you never know when it could end.

Very sad news.  Prayers go out to her family.

My tri coach sent out an email as a reminder:

I want everyone who does not swim in my class, or swims outside of class, to always always always have someone with you either swimming a few yards from you or in a kayak/canoe/boat.  Mary was a good swimmer, however went into the lake that morning feeling very tired. You never know what can happen to you cardiovascularly or respiratory wise when in the water.

Please use safety out there, and I hope I never see you alone swimming. I'll chase you to shore!

Please take care of each other and be safe out there.

Ehrlinger, Mary
MADISON
Mary Ehrlinger peacefully passed away, surrounded by her family and friends, in Madison on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009. She was born on May 29, 1971. She graduated from Oregon High School in 1989 and the University of Wisconsin in 1994. Mary was a talented and knowledgeable physical therapist. She was the rehabilitation director at Oakwood Village. She was respected and loved by her patients and co-workers. She has been described as knowing rehab inside and out. She married Scott Ehrlinger on Oct. 2, 1999. They resided on Madison's East side with their children Noah (age 8) and Ava (age 5). Noah has his mother's caring spirit and capacity for leadership. Ava has her mother's determination and drive. Mary was training for the 2009 Madison Ironman. She participated in numerous marathons and triathlons. Mary was born a natural athlete and was successful in anything she set out to do. Many have described her as the strongest person they knew. Mary had a passion for fine food, good wine and enjoying them with great friends. She loved to go to Concerts on the Square, the farmer's market, American Players Theater, and spending time at the UW Memorial Union. Mary enjoyed vacations with family and friends. She has spent much time in Napa, Newport Beach, Florida, and Door County. Mary is survived by her husband, Scott and children Noah and Ava. Mary was raised and loved by her parents, Bob and Chris Dicke and siblings, Meg Pennewell (Casey, niece Alexandra), Rob Dicke (Jenny Wagner, nephew Ben), Ann Raschein (Chad) and Karen Dicke (Ben Jayne). Bill and Karen Ehrlinger (parents-in-laws) and their sons, John (Jenny, nephew Miles) and Mike. In the last three years Mary was reunited with her birth parents, Tom and Kay McCarthy and her siblings, Amanda Knerr and Thomas McCarthy Jr. and their families. Mary is also survived by an abundance of family and friends who loved her. In Mary's true spirit of giving, she was able to offer life to many by donating all of her organs. A special thank you goes out to all the paramedics, fishermen and swimming companions that were at Lake Monona on Sunday. We also would like to thank the Meriter ICU nursing staff. A gathering will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, at the UW MEMORIAL UNION in the GREAT HALL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mary Ehrlinger Memorial Fund at Summit Credit Union to purchase kayaks for swimmer support on Lake Monona and also to provide for Noah's and Ava's education.
