Extreme Veteran 421 Central Connecticut | Subject: RE: I never go on a bike ride without... graceful_dave - 2009-08-26 7:59 AM Food/drink appropriate for the length of ride. I always carry a zip lock baggie in my jersey pocket or camelback with: - Cell Phone - Photo copies of my ID and Insurance cards - Small fold up card with wisconsin DOT laws related to bicycles that way if I get in an argument with a motorist over being on the road, I can site the actual laws. I've only recently begun carrying this after a run in on a tri club ride. On the road bike I have a seat bag with: - Tube - Glueless Patch Kit - Park Tire boot - 4,5,6mm allen wrenches - Two tire levers - 2 CO2 cartridges and adapter I carry a camelback/backpack mountain biking rather then take unnecessary stuff out and lose it, I just carry my standard mtb kit all the time, which consists of: - My Oh Sh*t bag - Small First aid kit - Emergency Blanket - Small Mirror - Strike on anything matches in a waterproof container - Couple zip ties - 1-3 Tubes depending on length of ride, usually 1 - Mini Pump with a bout 2 feet of duct tape wrapped around it - Couple CO2 cartridges and adapter - Strap from a tow clip - Folding tool - Spare sram quick links (8 and 9 speed so I have the right one no matter which bike I am riding) - Spare food. Usually just a gel or two, but for epic MTB rides (over 6 hours) I carry about 2000 extra calories on top of what I anticipate needing. - Spare derailleur hanger for the geared mountain bike - In late spring or early fall I add an extra pair of gloves, arm and leg warmers, skull cap and a light weight shell if it's there is a chance or rain. In late, late fall I'll add an extra layer for the upper body. It may seem like overkill, but mountain biking you can't just call and get picked up. It's either fix it, walk, or have to get rescued. I spent way to long in the boy scouts and had a chronic over packing problem even before that. On the other hand, I've never been stranded and I have had to use everything in my bag except the matches. Heck I'll just pack NOTHING and ride with Graceful-dave |

Expert 1116 Thornton, CO | Subject: RE: I never go on a bike ride without... Road ID is on my ankle. In my seat bag I have: 2 16oz CO2 cartridges CO2 inflator nozzle 1 tube tire wrenches multitool from ParkTools $1 bill 4 glueless stick on patches spare car key spare house key back pockets: Gu/banana/etc cell phone drivers license and debit/CC for a race I leave the cell phone, drivers license & debit card, and keys behind. I only take 1 CO2 cartridge and the nutrition stuff is race distance specific, but I do glue the Gu to my top tube so I can rip the top off easily. |

Pro 4578 Vancouver, BC | Subject: RE: I never go on a bike ride without... For a training ride:
I think that's it. I wear the helmet, ride the bike, keep the water bottle on the bike and keep everything else in the back pockets of my jersey. For a race:
I wear the helmet and jersey numbers, ride the bike, keep the frame number and two bottles on the bike, put the rest of the bottles in the feed zone where someone hands them to me when I need them, keep the snacks in the back pockets of my jersey and put the spare wheels in the wheel vehicle or pit. The microseconds that it may cost me in a race are a small price to pay for not having a long walk with the bike back to transition. |

Pro 4578 Vancouver, BC | Subject: RE: I never go on a bike ride without... GaryGnu - 2009-08-27 12:46 PM So, do some of you race with your under seat bag? No because I don't have an seat bag. I had a hard enough time attaching water bottle cages to my bike. Seriously though, I am lucky enough that I just concentrate on bike racing, so there is always neutral support and there is no need to bring anything. When I race a tri, I just go without and prepare to DNF if I get a flat (it's never happened though). |
