My wife is the one that got me into the sport.

I support her 101%. I'm the bike mechanic, The cycling coach, The mental toughness coach, The running coach, Personal trainer, swim buddy, cook and sometimes even the Alarm clock.

There is nothing harder than coaching you spouse!!!! But then there is no better feeling than seeing her finish well and almost always way infront of me.

I know he is tired of me talking about it but I know how proud he is of me. He actually ran with me the last 1/2 mile a little bit in front so he could take photos of me finishing. I cannot believe it. My own Dad thinks this is stupid and dangerous so to finally have someone who believes in me is amazing.

.....Daylight is better for me.

See? Told ya!

But of course, I also don't mind moonlight, candlelight, headlights, neon lights, halogen lights, starlight, flashlight, firelight, streetlight, strobe light, spot light, lava-lamp light, black light....you get the point. lol.  Guys really aren't picky.

It's my wife's fault that I'm doing this, she took me on my first run and when I started to do it a couple of times a week, she bought me a Timex Bodylink for my birthday to encourage me.

8- The cost of bike accessories
7- The cost of race entry fees
6- The cost of bike clothing
5- The cost of replacing the goggles I leave at the pool every 3 weeks
4- The amount of additional laundry (yes I do laundry too)
3- I call any workout 1 hour or less a short one
2- I won't admit to wanting to do an Ironman. ( I do but now I won't admit it on general principle)
1- My interest in and capacity for other physical activity has increased dramatically. (see #3)

The money can add up, but it doesn't really bother her. As she puts it "It's still less than you'd spend on cigarettes if you were still smoking". She's been a HUGE supporter and never fails to let me know that she's proud of me. When I told her today that I placed in the top 22% in my tri yesterday she said "You're such a Hottie!". Now that's priceless.

My wife doesn't like me wearing the heart rate monitor in bed and insisting that we step it up a notch..other than that she is OK with the triathlon issues...well maybe not the Endurox, endless trips to the bike shop, sweaty undergarments, and the continuous.."wow..did you see my calf muscles"  Of course now she doesn't get mad when she finds strange women's phone numbers written on pieces of paper in my wallet..she knows it is someone I met at the pool or biking and that we are going to talk about stroke technique, cycling shoes or the best flavor of GU...Her attitude is that it is better that I talk to someone else about these things then her.

I am very lucky to have someone so supportive. "Hey..you spent $1500.00 on that bike..why don't you get your ass on it and ride"

I've been wanting to do some uhh cross-training with my HRM on! The opportunity hasn't arisen, sadly.

And Marmadaddy - ADMIT IT! JUST SAY IT! "My name is Marmadaddy and I want to do an Ironman."

I recently proposed taking my wife to St. George Island in Florida for a weekend getaway...then mentioned there happened to be a tri that weekend. Went over like a pregnant high jumper, even though I promised we'd have three good days together.

Pregnant high jumper... hehehe. New one.

See, I would think this is a GREAT idea! If you said "Honey, let's go to St. George" and you took your golf clubs, would she complain? Geez. Not fair! Sorry, Mrs. Hawkeye needs to get with the program!

(DON'T YOU DARE QUOTE ME TO MRS. HAWKEYE)

Ah, the golf comparison. I tried that once and it failed miserably. Our friends were over and the wife was complaining that her husband was golfing all morning and playing a softball double header in the afternoon/evening. After hearing again how much time away from the family my training takes up (I do all weekday runs/swims before anyone is awake and spin on rollers after they are asleep. On Saturday I bike and run and am home before 9:30 and I take Sunday off) I suggested I drop triathlons and take up golf. Not even a response, just "the look".

Her problems include time away, supposed over training, money spent on equipment, impact on other social events; the usual suspects.

1. He doesn't like that I won't let him buy a road bike because "he has a wonderful mountainbike and we can't afford it", but the real reason is I'm afraid he'll drop me on our rides if he has a decent bike.

2. He thinks me putting on my skin-tight riding outfit is foreplay when in fact it's a signal that I'm about to leave the house. (Sometimes he's persuasive and I stay home - but he HATED the resolve I got from the bike challenge.)

3. He thinks we ought to eat something other than grilled chicken and salad once in a while. (Hey, I cooked grilled salmon just last week!)

4. Time spent training for my sport reduces the time he has available training for his sport since we share childcare duties.

5. Money. For example, he can't believe I spent over $40 on a "hydration system" [my amphipod] that he exclaims are JUST WATER BOTTLES!

6. Hygene. I've fallen into the habit of only showering after I workout, which is usually at least once a day, often twice a day. But on rest days, well, I didn't earn a shower, right?

7. Recruitment. He thinks I make the children train with me too often. On Friday, for example, I ran the children into the ground and they came home (early, without me) complaining about what an awful taskmaster I was. (Note that I was running while they were riding and I really think they ought to have been able to keep up with me.)

8. He misses me. Even if I'm home, I'm likely to be in bed early. I can't remember the last time I watched a movie with him. And drinking makes me too lethargic the next day so I don't even have a glass of wine in the evening with him anymore.

This list isn't fair without the 8 top things he likes about me being a triathlete, though.

She calls triathlon training my mid-life crisis (I'm 35 so she must be eyeing the insurance money ). I joke that a Porsche and affair would have been alot easier than training.

Seriously, every relationship has give and take. She is absolutely amazing with the kids and basically keeps our world in order. I love training and competing but it's not the number one priority in my life.

If you look at tris and SOs in a vacuum than I am jealous of the many people here that enjoy a supportive spouse. But, I don't live in a vacumm. I can barely even work our vacuum. And taken as a whole I'm a very happy man.

I tend to disagree with this, only because I don't see the "tri training/relationship as a whole" thing as a vacuum.  I see it as a microcosm.  That's why I find unsupportive SO's so disheartening.

I fully intend to, just not until after 1) I do a half IM 2) she finishes grad school.

And if I ever refer to myself in the third person by my BT handle, she'll have me committed.

Now stop yelling at me and get back to work.

She hates it that when I shave my legs, mine look better than hers. I tell her if she had legs like I did, we wouldn't even have gone out once, Seriously, I like a soft woman, not one that is muscular like me!

hah. When i posted this thread last night, I was striving more for the funny nuances that we develop that most people don't understand (aka, "chest stubble" and late night nookie schedules)...

some good stuff.. and I still think the shower is a perfect place for my wetsuit, no matter what anyone tells me..

I'm told that I do a lot of twitching in my sleep the night after I race.  My wife wouldn't sleep in the same bed with me last night because she was afraid of getting kicked.

5. He's sick of all this afternoon sex because I'm too tired by 10p.

Okay, I think he's imaginary.  No man turns down sex, no matter what the hour!

Not only that, but they actually prefer it in the daylight, or the lamplight, or the firelight or by flashlight if necessary, as long as there is light and they can SEE what's going on.  I think he may just be using reverse psychology on you to get more sex in case you feel guilty about giving it to him at the "wrong" time of day.

Um, if the lights are ever turned off, it's for the novelty. It's some crap about how he's tired at that time of day. Whatever. I'm tired at 9 o'clock.
