Why are we running from the zombies to live out the rest of our days floating at sea watching for an attack from zombies below the surface?

I say we stand up and fight. Sure, some of our friends and family will be turned into zombies, that's the price of battle. But if we all run to the water then the zombies will take over the world when all of the people living on the sea have died off.

I wanna kick some zombie azz!

My favorite would be

repopulating the world skills

Repopulating will be after we defeat them. I'm waiting for that part, too.

I happen to think a life on a sailboat would be very peaceful. Peaceful does not mean lack of work. It just means I don't have to live a violent life (tell that to the yummy fishes I plan on eating).

We're all going to die. At the least, with life as we know it going to hellinahandbasket, I will live life on my terms. Peaceful terms.

Zombies may not be able to swim, but they don't drown, either.

Thus, they can walk along the BOTTOM of the ocean and then propel themselves upward at your boat.

I am not certain of the specific gravity of a Zombie, but I imagine that it is > live human.

Zombies can't swim. I've always said an escape to the sea was the best plan. No need to live a violent life worrying about zombies; just enjoy life on the seas.

No but they walk on the bottom of the ocean.  In World War Z they walked from the Caribbean Islands to the mainland.  Deep oceans might be safe but you have to go ashore at SOME point.

Big deal, they can walk on the bottom.
  • What good will that do them once you're off the Continental Shelf? Or even in 20 meters of water?
  • Zombies are not immune from having their brains burst due to immense water pressure at depth.
  • How will they know what direction the sailboat is headed when they are 20 meters below surface?
  • Tack just once and you are on a different trajectory and your zombie has no clue.
  • Chasing a sailboat that is moving along topside while you are walking underwater with no idea what is happening at the waterline is preposterous to the point of being zero threat.
You never have to go ashore. Keep a barge off the Continental Shelf; use this to grow your plants.

Other skills it would be advantageous to acquire: You're gonna want hurricane tracking skills.

I see survival as a matter of getting the biggest return for the smallest investment. No need to learn combat skills, making your own bullets, living in constant fear and heightened anxiety (unless you're into that), etc.

Just get off land and learn to feed yourself. Live in peace and harmony with the elements.

That's what all the sailors say.  Until they get lazy one day and wake up to a zombie on board

It's not the zombie you see chasing you that you have to worry about.  It's the ones you forget about.  The ones who are floating on the surface than float up to your boat in the middle of the night.

The barge is just going to float?  Probably not, would need to be anchored.  That's one long anchor....

Not as simple as it sounds.  Need to figure out how to desalinate large amounts of water for both yourself and your crops.  Now that I think about it crops are going to be hard to grow as well in the saline environment.  Would need an enclosed greenhouse.

(I love the internet (and COJ in particular).  Where else can you have an argument about a zombie invasion )

  1. Life is a risky proposition.
  2. We're all going to die.
  3. We don't get to decide how or when. Whether it's getting tossed overboard in a big storm, a meteor landing on you or getting knocked in the noggin by a swinging boom, stuff happens. Then again, old age happens, too.
  4. The odds of encountering a zombie on the high seas is extremely minimal to the point of being on a par with the odds of getting hit by a meteor. I think the meteor is more likely.
  5. You wouldn't live on the barge. That would be too risky. Live on the nimble sailboat. The barge is a luxury, if you had to have fresh veggies and even livestock (maybe chickens, nothing big that would require a lot of resources). For the barge, you'd want a rotating shift or just minimal time on board, enough to pick fruit off your fruit trees. Again, if the barge is off the Continental Shelf, you'll be safe. Sure the zombies can float but a) how will they know the barge is out there and b) what are the chances they will simply float out into the Atlantic and bump into it? Very low. See falling meteor.
  6. The Atlantic Ocean: think of it as having an extremely wide and deep moat.
I already listed water treatment as a skill one would want to have.

Oh, I forgot to mention above: Solar energy. You'll want solar energy panels on your boat (free energy) to power your instruments. So, you'll need basic electronics and electricity knowledge/skills.

And, no it's not simple. But it is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar more simple than living on land with marauding zombies where you have to learn combat skills, smelting skills, archery, etc etc etc. Live a peaceful life on a boat where you greatly decrease your odds of being hit by a falling zombie .... or live on land in constant fear and anxiety. I know where I'm headed.

But you have to remember that zombie odds are WAAAAAAAAY different than being hit by a meteor, or for that matter everyday odds.

It's not the dying part that is concerning.  It is the re-animating, searching the land for delicious brains, forcing loved ones to shoot me in the head part that I am trying to prepare for.

If you get one with a gas station you can fill up the generators too. I have a similar plan only useing Costco.

Having lived aboard a sailboat for three winters, I assure you that zombie attacks from beneath the water surface are rare.  Set the alarm on the depth finder and it will alert you as they approach.  However, many of the other cruisers that you encounter on other boats are zombies.  Fortunately most are very docile.

In what world? I think your estimation of zombie skills is hugely unrealistic.

Again, zombies are not immune to pressure. The kind of pressure found in very deep water. The kind that forces your brains out through your ears, eyes, etc.

Suppose for a moment that a zombie can withstand extremely high pressure and that they have no use for oxygen (rolling my eyes at that one).
  • They are 400 meters below surface and somehow, lucky for them, they see a dark shadow cruise overhead (the hull of your boat). By the time they get their bodies to the surface, how far away will your sailboat be from the point that they surface? I'm sure it a simple geometry equation to figure that out.
  • Are they also super-swimmers that they will be able to swim after your agile boat and catch you?
  • Do zombies not require fuel to sustain these fish-like adventures through the Atlantic Ocean? How do they refuel for these 36 hour swims?
  • You're talking about both endurance swimming AND sprinting. Really?
  • The laws of physics don't just fly out the window cuz we've got zombies running around.
And while I'm at it ... I think it's safe to assume the zombies are capitalists. They want the best bang for their buck. Why float off into unknown waters after an elusive, nimble boat when you've got plenty of brain food hunkered down in Sams Clubs and Costcos all over town, just waiting for you to pry your way into the place and scoop up brains?

Think about it. Would you chase after elusive prey when you have zero skill for capturing them, or would you stay on dry land where your odds of bumping into dinner is exponentially higher and the conditions are in your favor?

I don't know about the sailboat, I think I'd want something a little bigger like a sloop or something.  That way I could have a ping pong table.

Agreed. Something big, but not too big. No powerboats though. Wind power. With solar power for your gadgets/electronics.

Having skills is important. This is one of the many reasons I have taken sailing lessons.

But I think it is important to also have a plan. My first step is round my peeps (who have not been zombified) and bored ourselves into an home improvement store (Home Depot, lowes, etc).

But it has to been one close to food store so we can send out expeditions for food. A super-Walmart or Target would be idea because we can get food and other supplies.

Back at our DIY camp we can protect ourselves, collect rainwater, start a garden, and trick out a zombie-proof vehicle that will allow us to travel to zombie free zones.

I didn't think to use Sam's, great idea!
I'll still take over Home Depot and we can barter for supplies and food!

Those of you anticipating a peaceful life on an island somewhere, or a barge, are overlooking one crucial fact.  Zombititis is a virus.  Sure, it's restricted to humans... currently.  But just give viruses enough time, and enough hosts in which to work, and whoila, they can mutate to infect other species.  With huge numbers of zombified humans everywhere, it's only a matter of time before the virus mutates into something that can infect birds.  Oh, let's just call it ZARS.  Once it's infected bird populations, ZARS will spread all over the globe, since birds migrate.

You may have a few years of peace on your Barge of Eden.  But keep an eye on those skies...

After reading all these replies about the zombies walking under water etc. I have had a thought about something that ain't gonna be good for anyone, especially those out to sea:

Zombie Sharks.

Clearly I don't need to explain the ramifications of this.

As long as you don't go into the water, the zombie sharks would not be an issue.  Even non-zombie sharks don't climb up the rope and get into the boat.

So are zombie sharks and sharks with laser beams two different things?  I mean, I always thought zombie sharks weren't even real.

Do not overlook the importance of Underpants Gnome skills. Capitalists that they are, surely they too will recognize the opportunity offered by a zombie apocolypse and ammend their credo thus:

  1. Collect zombies
  2. ???
  3. Profit!

As someone who has been out in the middle (OK not middle but far enough out) of the Atlantic on a sailboat several times I can tell you it is ANYTHING but peaceful.  Near shore, yeah peaceful.  Out in the ocean... it'll put the fear of God into you real quick.

Me, I'd be heading north, far north to an Arctic research station (lots of dehydrated food, generators, computer equipment etc..) where they freeze in their tracks during the winter.  Then it's easy to pick them all off prairie dog hunting style.

(Oh and Renee, according to World War Z zombies do not need oxygen...)

Yeah, y’know, that whole Big-Box Department Store as Refuge thing sounds great until the two horny teenagers who are holed up with you and the other desperate survivors decide to sneak out to the attached parking structure to make out and foolishly leave the security gate unlocked.

If you’re in a Home Depot, you’ll be able to hold them at bay for a while using nail guns (with the safety features disabled), chain saws, gardening implements and flammable chemicals, but you’ll eventually be stuck hiding under a tarpaulin in a model Jacuzzi tub while they sniff you out.

If you’re in a Sam’s Club or Costco? Good luck with that. Maybe you can make some sort of trebuchet out of the wooden pallets and hurl 24-piece knife sets and flaming gallon jugs of Drano at them as they swarm towards your position at the top of the escalator, but otherwise, I’d say you’re SOL. On the plus side, there will be plenty of paper towels to clean up all the blood.

I think this thread got bogged down with details (sailboat vs. Sams Club vs Home Depot).

The question was about needed skills.

I think the number one most important skill is:
  • Bug-out time.  How soon can you be in the truck with wheels turning?
Are you gonna be freaking out and trying to load gramma's photo albums in the trunk while trying to persuade the little Schnauzer to leave his toy and get in?

Time for hard decisions: How much time are you giving your wife and kids to get in or get left?

Does your car have a full gas tank RIGHT NOW - or is it hovering near E?

my take on the Sams Club / Costco question: Every young punk, hoo-rah Modern Warfare on the XBox playing idiot is heading for Costco.  Walmart still sells rifles/shotguns in my town.  What a cluster-f***.  Wouldn't catch me within 5 miles of that craziness.

My tank's full, and my bug-out bag never leaves the rig - how about you?

Hence why I said I would first pack up all my guns and ammo.  Why would I resort to a trebuchet when my kids an I could mow them down with proven weapons.

Unfortunately, if you are in a major metropolitan area, you are the one who is SOL.  That and highways are the first two places to avoid my man.  You may want to consider chopper lessons or hitch a ride on Renee's boat and get out of there.
