I rode part of the bike course Saturday morning and there were a lot of people out, so I guess some people are ready.  Unfortunately I'm not one of them...

x2!! My goal is now simply to finish the race, ambulatory, before it closes, and without exacerbating the injuries that have kept me from training much the last few months. I'm trying to internalize the concept of racing with the body I have, and not the one I'd planned on.

I've ridden the bike course enough to know when to downshift and climb and where I can push it a little; it's not an easy ride, but I know I can do it.
I ran the 10k route for the first time on Saturday; I had heard about the killer hills and had this built up in my mind as terribly hard, so I was please to find it no where as hard as I was imagining it. I think I'll be able to reduce my time estimate for the run by 3 minutes!
I'm feeling really good about this race

I am so out of shape. This race is going to be interesting. I've only ridden a 40K once since my HIM last September, and have only run over 5 miles once or twice since then. I didn't swim for a little over two months this past winter, and have only been doing one or two swims per week since then. Ahhh. I still need to rent a wetsuit and find a hotel room .

jborneman3 - 2011-04-11 4:32 PM i was out saturday and rode the bike course twice and ran the run course, awesome day. If anyone is lacking motivation, get out to Columbia, hundreds of people training and it really gets you motivated after our horid weather we have been having...

I'd agree I rode the course on Sunday and tons of people out there.

How goes the training CJ?

I am really stoked about riding the course next month, of course my only chance will be to do so on raceday, but that is the most fun day anyway.

Training is going well, I'll see ya out there Fred.

Has anyone tried out the water? What are the temps predicted to be like?

Training is fairly well and I am almost where I would like to be this early on in the season. This is just a tune up for Eagleman and Rhode Island to get some quality open water and mass start swim experience under my (racing) belt.

Swimming in the lake ahead of time will land you in the clink, and our own Trishie will have to prosecute you.

Generally it's in the mid 60's I think, and can be chilly in the morning.  I'd definitely bring a wetsuit if you've got one!

I agree with Josh, this question comes up every year.  NO SWIMMING IN THE LAKE!  I used to help with this event when I was in high school and you will get either arrested as Josh mentioned or DQ'd if swimming before the event.

Typical temp is around 65-68 degrees so you'll need the wetsuit.

Im already losing sleep. I am doing my second open water swim this weekend with my coach and I already miss my "black line" and walls. Really nervous about the swim and petrified every time I read how "challenging" and "tough" the course is. Its my first Tri ever and I am a big dude so this is really gonna be something! Still not sure how to change a bike tire, going to get a trisuit tomorrow, rented my wetsuit (XXL!!). "Just finish" is my motto!!

Columbia was my first race and I had no idea what I was in for. My advice is just have fun!! The goal after finishing is to be sure that you'll want to do another race. Get this one under your belt and then you'll have plenty of other races to stress over your fitness, times, etc.

Good luck and welcome to BT

Columbia is one of the best races to do for your first tri! The volunteers are wonderful, it is a lot of fun, and those competing cover the whole range of levels from pro to beginners. Nevertheless everyone cheers for everyone else. Yes, the course is a bit more challenging than other tris with a few inclines/hills but that just makes you want to do more tris once you finish.

Does anyone know if the swim buoys have distances marked on them?  The didn't last year for Celebration but Nation's had them marked.  I'm not very good at pacing myself while swimming so knowing home much further I have is helpful.

Someone from TriColumbia spoke at our last tri club meeting; distances will NOT be marked, but I think they said they would be trying to place them about every 200m.

They most likely wont be marked. They will also be about 1/4 the size of the buoys at Nations.

Guess I'll just follow the crowds.  I'm in wave 8 so there should be plenty of people in front of me and even more starting after me to catch me so if I'm by myself I'm obviously off course!  On second thought, I should probably learn how to sight and pace myself...

Only thing marked on the course is the run (well other then the CT triangle on the bike).  If you look carefully enough on the bike course you can see the 10 mile marker

The run markers are pretty faded. I was told that the park won't let them paint markers on the paths anymore. I'm wondering what exactly they will do on race day.

I believe they also put out signs of how far you have gone if I remember correctly

Most people have Garmins anyway so it does not really matter. If you don't, chances are that the person next to you will

I don't have a Garmin but this will be year 4 or 5 for me so I have this course pretty much memorized.

I was wondering about that! I was running (er, rather, strolling) it last weekend, and it was often barely legible, if there at all...then again, I was running without my bifocals.....Tongue out

How well marked will the turns be, or will there be someone at every turn directing people?

Turns for what?  The bike or the run?  Bike is pretty well marked and people will be there.  The run course is small enough that you won't be too lost.
