I'm with Jim.  I get really tired of celebrities who confuse their status with credibility.  When they get a degree, then I'll listen to what they have to say.  In the meantime, just entertain me. That's what they're good at and what they're paid for.  I can get opinions as good from my neighbor, and more knowledgable ones from a credentialed source.   Too acerbic I know (I'm mellowing now), but I think I'm still vetting from the whole Tom Cruise episode.  I like Leo, I do. Hey, I wish I were Leo!

Yeah. OK. So I hate hate hate how celebitys always get face time to talk about "issues" just because they are celebrities. I mean, who's the half brain that's sitting on their couch thinking, "well, if Leo says it's true, it must be true."

Couldn't Oprah find, you know, like a scientist or something? I'm not saying a Ph.D is the be all and end all of smart, but damn.

TriComet - 2005-10-28 8:28 AM

I'm staying away....wait....just can't resist.

Yes, there are little things we can all do but....ok. nevermind. I don't have the energy today. Take it away Jim.

riiiight, and if you were famous you'd never ever use that to get an issue out that you felt was important...

c'mon we all have things that we think are important, but you the lil guy just dont have the voice. Incubus takes the atrocities in Sudan very seriously, Leo may actually worry about global warming (or judging by the tips from the show he may take the power issues in California very seriously), and i imagine that you Jim, have some issue that does irk you at some level, however powerful or powerless you are to do anything about it.

maybe you want to reform education, or spend more money to catch Osama, or maybe you think current recycling protocols are a joke or that our troops should be less widely dispersed across the globe.

i think its fine to view the issues that one holds dear as silly, its your perogative and first amendment right to think what you want and say so. but to think that the very act of someone with the clout to get TV airtime talking about an issue is lame? well thats just ridonkulus. you'd do the same thing if your name was a household noun.

You know, you're right to some extent. I guess it's OK to use celebrity to bring light to an issue. What Princess Di did with landmines for instance, comes to mind. I just have a hard time believing these people really care about issues, and am more apt to believe it's a vehicle for them to get their mugs out. I mean, he's got a film in post production. Mostly, I think they care about themselves. You don't think his agent just dreamed this up?

If only there were a bullshit meter.

I do my part by not turning on the TV and watching Oprah.

AMEN!!!!

Okay, first of all, THE PLANET IS FINE!!!   The people are messed up.  The planet has endured a lot worse than us.  It's been through ice ages, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tidal waves, meteor showers, the magnecit reversal of the poles.  Lots of things worse than us and it'll be here long after we're gone.

If people want to take this seriously I think it needs a new name.  SAVE THE PLANET isn't working cuz not enough people care about the planet.  SAVE OURSELVES might have a better ring because that's what it boils down to....

That my $1.05 worth of George Carlin rant.

Ken - 2005-10-28 12:37 PM I'm with Jim.  I get really tired of celebrities who confuse their status with credibility.

They don't confuse their status with credibility, they recognize it for what it is: capital.  The argument that people with fame shouldn't use it to forward their political/social/spiritual/whatever beliefs doesn't hold water in a free, capitalist society. Using that logic, the same argument could be made that wealthy people/corporations/organizations shouldn't be allowed to use their financial capital to forward their political and social beliefs.

How is the Audobon society or Exxon/Mobil spending money on advertising and lobbying politicians any different from Leo DiCaprio talking about environmental issues on Oprah or Ted Nugent talking about gun rights on a TV show?

Well, Ted Nugent actually knows something about guns. Leo's a dunderhead.

But the trouble I have is people that think celebrity = authority.

FLAME ON!!!

If I had swimming pools full of money I'd have an eco-friendly house too. It would draw all it's energy from solar power or the methane given off by the heard of cows that I would keep (this describes GW's ranch by the way, minus the cow methane part). I would not just have an electric car, but an electric jet car too. I could also afford to become a Level-3 vegan (that means I don't eat anything that casts a shadow). It's easy to be eco-friendly when you have nearly limitless resources.

Could be worse, he could use his celebrity to promote latent promiscuity or give his kids ridiculous names. In the very least I give him an "A" for effort, even if he did have ulterior motives.

Well, Ted Nugent actually knows something about guns. Leo's a dunderhead.

But the trouble I have is people that think celebrity = authority.

You've never been around someone truly famous for any period of time. Celebrity does equal authority. Famous people demand things and get them. Sylvester Stallone could walk into almost any place of business in North America, ask to speak to the most senior person there and it would happen. He can command the attention of powerful people solely because of his fame. He can walk up to total strangers on the street, ask for their wallet or cell phone and they would give them to him, just because he's famous.

The words fame and fortune have been used together for a long time. In sufficient quantities and used wisely, each can be wielded to great effect. They're forms of power.

Here's a good recent example: Bono recently met privately with Pres. Bush to discuss debt forgiveness for undeveloped countries. He's a private citizen of a foreign country, but he got a meeting with the POTUS to discuss a political issue he personally cares about. He got that meeting through effective use of his capital: his celebrity. Others get that meeting through campaign contributions.

If I hear a celebrity talking about something like this I tend to tune them out simply because I believe a) they are simply regurgitating something someone has told them and b) they are simply using it as a vehicle to get their name out for whatever upcoming movie, tv show, or album they have coming out.  Triple that feeling if it happens on Oprah.  I didn't see the show, but if I'm not mistaken, were they not promoting a documentary that Leo just happens to be doing the voice work on?  I would be much more inclined to pay attention if it were on OLN, A&E, the news etc.  I have heard people talk about GW being cause for all the hurricanes hitting North America the past couple of years and that the polar ice cap is slowly melting.  You can look at history and see that hurricanes hitting North America are not on any kind of weird upswing and there are some who say the polar ice cap has actually thickened in recent years.

And then, you have Madonna speaking out against the materialism of the American public????  Isn't she living in some big castle in Scotland or Ireland or something like that??  And didn’t' she make enough money to live that way by being known as the "material girl" and preying on pre-teen and teen girls to buy her albums and concert tickets????

I was listening to NPR on the way home from work last week (it's good for getting the blood pressure up!) and they had some hurricane expert talking about the high number of storms this season. The interviewer asked him if it had anything to do with GW. He said, "No, there is a very definite 25 to 40 year cycle with hurricanes...." And they asked again, "But global warming, blah blah blah" and the hurricane EXPERT AGAIN said, "The weather goes in cycles....1933 and 1969 both had and extremely high number of storms......" Interview cut short. Ha!

I just have a hard time believing that leaving my cell phone charger plugged in has anything to do with Hurricane Katrina....

So are you saying that NPR was trying to coax the hurricane expert to say the GW was the source our latest hurricane?

In my opinion, NPR tends to have a certain bias to their reporting (and I know you can say that about FOX, CNN and whoever.)

I think they were disappointed that the hurricane expert didn't jump on the global warming bandwagon and instead attributed it to natural cycles in the weather.

I just HAD to open my big mouth

Here's what I think. Famous or not, everyone has issues they care about. I think Turqy touched on this. For instance, I am a huge animal lover. Watching all those poor stray animals during Hurricane Katrina was heartwrenching. If I had the means or was famous, WHATEVER, I would have gone there and rescued every animal myself and rehabilitated them. If Oprah had called me and asked if I wanted to come on her show and talk about it, you bet I would! Who wouldn't?

Like I said before, some celebrities are better than others. Just because you're famous doesn't mean you can't care about something! That is just unfair.

I know ya'll will hate me for saying this but in Leo's defense, he has been an environmentalist for the past eight years. He drives an electric car. Its the only car he drives. His house is eco-friendly. Is his only reason for doing that to be on Oprah? Please.

Leo? Environmentalist? I don't think so. Sorry to rain on his parade, Courtney-- he may drive an electric car, but when he was in Thailand filming that movie 'The Beach' they blasted the hell out of a bunch of protected mangroves, tanking the local fisheries' recruitment by removing the habitat, according to friends of mine who still live there. Didn't hear him taking to the airwaves to bemoan that.

I like the conceptual level of this thread better, but I just couldn't let that one slide. Yep, I think self-promotion is why he's flogging GW. He may care, but he cares a lot more when he's got a movie coming out.
