From the Tri world, Nicole DeBoom is super nice. I met her at a talk she gave last year at a local running/tri store after winning World's Toughest Half and asked her about my ITBS. She gave me some recommendations that worked for her and Tim. Then I talked to her about 6 months later at a small, local women's only 5k (my girlfriend's first) selling her new skirts and she remembered me! Very cool.

Brad Kearns is fairly well known. He is a race director in my area and gives talks to my Tri club. He's also really funny.

For non-tri, when I was in high school in L.A., for fundraisers instead of bake sales we took a school bus full of students to tapings of TV shows. If you have a big group, they pay you to go. I don't remember all the shows we saw, but I remember Wheel of Fortune, Jeffersons, Gimme a Break, Thicke of the Night (talk show with Alan Thicke), and A.K.A. Pablo (with Paul Rodriguez).

A student in my high school was one of the original Bad News Bears. One of the little latino kids that didn't say much.

Years ago at Disneyland, I was in line for Mr. Toad's Wild Ride with Teller from Penn & Teller.

They used to film a lot of shows in the area where I grew up (San Fernando Valley). I remember walking down the street with Wilt Chamberlain who was in an HBO special. And there are many movies or TV shows where the neighborhood looks familiar (Boogie Nights comes to mind).

I can't even remember all the "stars" I've met. Back in the 80s I lived in San Francisco and worked as a pretzel and hotdog vendor on the street. In that job I met a few celebs and saw many more. Some of the highlights were Joe DeMagio and Clint Eastwood.. I didn't approach them since I feel they get so much of that already. I'm sure they appriciate their fans but I'm also sure they get sick of being bothered all the time. I prefer to give them thier space.

Later on I ended up in New Jersey where I picked up a part time job working as a bouncer at the Stone Pony. I met TONS of music stars there one of which was, of course, Bruce Springsteen. He was a bit of a regular for a while. Bruce was every bit of the guy he portrays on stage. He's a working class guy, very approachable and suprisingly humble. He was cool. Another face that fequented the bar was John Bonjovi. John had a much bigger ego than Bruce but from the crowd of panty throwing groupies that chased him around I think some of it was deserved. Others I met were Greg Alman, Joan Jett, Cindy Lauper, the two wrestlers that made up the "Heart Foundation" (the hitman and the other guy), Bam Bam Bigalow (wrestler)... hmmm.. I can't even remember. There were so many. I remember one night I walked into the bar on my night off and Bruce and Mickey Rourke were standing just inside the entrance talking to one of the owners. Bruce met me with, "Hey! Hows it going!" as he offered his hand. I'd never met Mickey before but he offered his hand anyway.

Here in Hawaii I've met a few here and there but at far less frequency. I provided security during the Pro Bowl one year. During that event I got to walk around on the field during the game. It was pretty cool to stand so close to the team benchs where so many top notch atheletes were involved in the game. That was back with Elway and Young were still playing. It was kind of thrilling to see them both at the same time.

Oh... I sometimes work during my off duty time providing security for the set of the TV show Lost. Everyone I've met there has been really nice so far. I'm a big LOTR fan so meeting Dominic Monaghan was a thrill. He is very friendly and often took time to talk to random fans on the street about the show, plot line and what they thought was going to happen next. He's a cool guy.

In my mind, celebs are normal people so I treat them as such.

Hmmm, met several, but none that compare to meeting the BTiches... I'm wicked jealous.  I dreamed that all the hot Jennifer's from the BT list took turns at me the other night, does that count?

Several Football Players - most notably I bumped into/stepped on LaDanian Tomlinson's foot at a party I apologized and as I walked away my roommate started yelling at me for almost injuring our heisman canidate (he's suprisingly small).

Countless wrestlers - Big Show was my favorite, being a clydesdale it's always interesting to be around someone who totally and completely dwarfs you.  In the picture I have with him you could tell that his hand would totally engulf my head.

Daniel Stern (of Home Alone) - He toured our squadron during a USO show.  I was proud that I was able to get him to call me a "sick-o" for liking Very Bad Things.

Plenty of others, but didn't really interact with them other than to say Hi or get a quick picture, couldn't tell you if they really a total ***** or a genuinely nice guy.

In the triathlon world, I've met Dave Scott and Karen Smyers at the Texas Man/Woman Triathlon.  Karen Smyers is an absolute sweetheart and Dave Scott is just hilarious.  Both of them were just awesome and very receptive to questions.  I saw Nicole DeBoom at the Austin Marathon Expo, but did not talk to her.

I too have met Tone Loc, he came and performed at a club back when I was at Texas Tech.  It was so funny, dancing to all of his old songs.  During his breaks they would play dance music and he got on the floor and danced with all of us, it was pretty cool.  The frat's always got several has-beens to play at events like Vanilla Ice, etc.

Bowling for Soup was a small band in Texas before they made it big.  They frequently played at a bar in Abilene.  My dad became good friends with them (as he does with many bands that come through the area.  My dad is a jeweler and would often make jewelry pieces with band logo's on them).  Anyways, they would play at my dad's house every now and then.  All I can say, is man do they LOVE their beer.  Deep Blue Something was another band that we were friends with when they played in the area.

Oh, and I forgot John Cobb, the aerodynamics guru of the triathlon and procycling world.  His shop used to be in Shreveport, LA, but then he moved to Tyler, TX.  He gave some presentations at a couple of our meetings and I would see him at some of the local tri's.  His store did not last in Tyler though   However, John Cobb is also big into custom painting of frames.  When he moved to Tyler, there was no room there so he moved his paint shop to our LBS here in Longview.  He comes in every now and then to do some painting and bike fittings.  He has taught a couple of the guys in the shop how to do painting too, and they are pretty good at it as well.

I have met tons of famous sports celebrities but the coolest guy I met was August Cinjun Tate. Lead singer for Remy Zero and ex husband to Alyssa Milano. He wrote and recorded the theme song Somebody Save me on Smallville. Funny thing is he was a regular where I bartended for several years. He and I use to have hour long conversations about whatever. All this time he never brought it up and some of the other servers had always said he was married to Alyssa and one day I asked hima and we talked a little about her but more about his music career. Still when he came in there after we really never brought it up again just had our usual conversations. Now he is a cool guy!

Gee whiz, I haven't met too many famous people in my life.  The only people of note whom I have met and spoken with are:

Canadian triathlete Lisa Bentley is charming and has a heart warming smile at all times.

Rock'n'roll great Chuck Berry was great but kind of scary.  Of course I was on acid that time.

Two former Canadian Prime Ministers: Pierre Elliott Trudeau was charismatic and confident and John Diefenbaker who was stuffy and full of himself.

Two forum lmembers, Jennifer (Keepitup) and Sann (Laerka) both of whom are very nice young ladies.

I have met a lot of music people because I went to a music school in CA and the musicians would come and do clinics, plus I thought I was going to be rich and famous and got to try out for a lot of bands out there.

The funniest meeting someone famous was me at a celebraty golf tourny I was playing in and was chatting with this girl. we were all flirty and were getting along good and then this guy comes up and stands next to her. I am thinking he is trying to mac out on me and I give him a look. then he starts talking about all this racing stuff and asked for her autograh. He walks away and I looked at her and said "so what are you famous?" It was Debra Renshaw and she is a Nascar truck series driver and she said "dont you watch nascar?" and I said "no not me too boring"..... She walked away...

Oh Chuck Woolery is from my home town and I waited on him when I was a asst manager of a movie theater and he brought his kid in to see aladdin, he was a butt head.

ellismichael - 2006-01-12 4:46 PM From the Tri world,

I have a friend who has done IM Canada about 7 times (okay I've lost count). Anyway he is writing a triathlon book and he interviewed Sister Madonna.

Oh yeah, I guess you could consider that friend of mine (the one writing the book) famous too. He has a lot of acting and voice over credits.

I had Steve Martin sign my helmet over in Saudia Arabia in 90.  He wasn't handling the heat very well.  Once had Al Oerter (4 time Olympic Shot Gold Medalist) sign my Drake Relays magazine.

My list has some crossover from other people's lists. I used to work at a ski resort that had a lot of big summer conferences with lots of realllly rich people.

Ah-nold, before he became the governator. I parked his Hummer. And I met Muh-ria.

I met Adam West. And parked his black Chevy Suburban, nicknamed the batmobile. Notice a trend here?

I met Picabo Street, and didn't recognize her.

I met Colin Powell VERY briefly.

I met Rosa Parks, and gave her a ride. There's more to that story, but that's the short version.

I held the door for Bill Gates and his entourage, and for Phil Knight, and for Bill Joy, and Paul Allen. No, they weren't all there on the same day.

I gave Lawrence Taylor directions once. He had earrings in the shape of lightning bolts.

I was in the same hotel with Oliver Stone once.

That's all I got. I hope to meet John Glenn soon, like before he dies (because after wouldn't be as good).

okay, this is sort of embarassing. when i was in college, i spent one wierd week partying with dizzy reed (keyboardist from guns'n'roses), sid riggs (drummer from halford), and some other wierd friend of theirs named charles (who was in a band, rez rocket, maybe?). it was wierd because we had no idea who they were when they started chatting us up in a salem bar. none of us were big fans of metal in general. i'm more a bjork and pixies kind of gal. anyway, some school friends and i hung out with them, and when it was clear we weren't going to sleep with any of them - get this - they thought we were cool. we still didn't believe them that they were in bands we'd actually heard of...until a couple days later when we tracked down a couple cds and found their names. still, none of us were star struck, and i guess they though that too was cool. they proceeded to take us out to dinner, drinking, dancing, and having quite a fun time over the rest of the week - until they left oregon to get back to their rock'n'roll life. they still tried to seduce us occationally (and unsuccessfully). actually, one night dizzy picked up some other (loose) woman while hanging out with us (not that any of us approved) and we know think she went back to their hotel with them, but ditched her the next day. not too impressed by that, but it was a fun week.

here's a photo of me with another musician, my husband bill, who used to play the 7th street entry in his boxers shorts, long before i met him. this picture clearly shows my inner rocker (again, how embarassing!)

hey, i sold licorice to jessica lang when i was working at hepzibah's sweete shoppe in duluth. she and sam shepard were in town for a visit. she grew up in cloquet, minnesota, which is just outside of duluth.

i forgot to mention that i had the chance to meet paul wellstone, which was a major honor. he was such an amazing person and his loss was a tragic one for minnesota, and i believe, for our country and our planet. a co-worker of mine from the university of minnesota, mary mcevoy, was very involved with the minnesota dfl and was, unfortunately, on the same plane with him when it went down in northern minnesota.

oh, a few more musician things...

i met taj mahal after he played at big top chautauqua in wisconsin. got his autograph on a shirt that i no longer have. love taj mahal.

when i saw bela fleck and the flecktones were playing at big top chautauqua, bela fleck left the stage while victor wooten was doing a solo. he wandered among the crowd and as he walked past where my parents and i were sitting, stopped, and asked me if he could sit down (the seat next to me was one of the only available seats in the place). he sat until the solo was almost over, and then walked back to the stage. my mom tried to get me to talk to him after the show 'a good hungarian boy, with a name like bela!' (my mom is 1/2 hungarian). anyway, i didn't go talk to him, but he seemed nice and was very polite.

sort of dated (no smirking) rick friel of the band jodie watts and the rockfords. at the time he was in a band called give. he lived in seattle, and i was living in oregon, so we called and wrote, but the long distance thing didn't work out. his brother chris is the rockfords too, and at the time was in both give and goodness.
