I just PM'd Ron and asked for his comments on the letter and our potential use of the BT logo.

Thanks everyone for the compliments but I didn't do anything other than put what we were all feeling down on paper.  Thanks for helping, Dan (morey1).  Let's see where it goes from here.

I think since COJ doesn't get as much traffic I'll start a thread over there pointing to this one.

It worked, hangloose, came here from the main forum.  What a tragic story, but what a wonderful letter you've written.  Can't find a thing about it that isn't sincere and from the heart.  Thanks to all who did it.

Morey1 guided me here...yes, being a father of 2 little boys, I can't imagine his 8 year-old all of the sudden without a father who he clearly loves so much.

Sure, use the logo but only if you want to.  I attached the original document with a smaller, cleaner, less obtrusive logo faded in the background should you want to use it.

Thanks Ron!  Personally, I like Ron's version.  If everyone agrees, McFuzz,  can you print Ron's version and mail/deliver it to where you see fit?  Is that possible?

Not trying to steal anyone's thunder, so hangloose, or anyone else, please slap me down if you think this should look different or be handled differently.

I think you're doing a great job with it and I'm glad this is a team effort.  Run with it.  I just provided some text,  you and Ron made it look good and if McFuzz wants to finish it off that would be great.

I was thinking, is it possible this guy was a BT'er?  He may have been and nobody knows yet?  I realize it's unlikely, but it is possible.  Is it possible to check a membership list to see if he's registered?  I don't know, just seems like something maybe we should check.

Notice how I keep coming up with things for other people to do?  I'm very good at that. ;>

Thanks for routing me here.  I live in the area and had not heard about this yet.  As excited as I am about my new fast bike, this gives me pause.  We just have to be as careful as possible, but this was just a terrible tragedy.

All,

I made a couple of edits, included here and attached.

When I send this, I'd like to include some first names to make it personal. (Closing with "Your friends at xxxx sounds so... commercial...)

*************text*******************
Dear Ms. Jordan,
We are writing to express our sympathies and sorrow for the loss of your son, Jay.

We have probably not ever met, but we shared a kindred spirit with Jay. We are a group of triathletes and triathletes-in-training who have gotten to know each other through a website. Many of us identified strongly with Jay’s life story. It may have been his commitment to training, a desire to lead a healthier life, a common race, his age or his young children that touched us. Some of us are registered to compete in the same triathlon he was training for. Others live right in your area and saw this on the local news. We recognize the satisfaction that tri training brought to his life and the joy he felt at becoming an athlete during this part of his life. It is a joy that we share with each other. We share your grief as well.

None of us ever really think that something like this will happen to us. It is an awful and senseless tragedy. We cannot offer you answers why this happened. We can only express our sorrow at your loss, and let you know that as you cry there are others who cry with you. We will keep you and the rest of Jay’s family in our hearts and prayers.

May you find peace and strength when you most need it.

Sincerely,

Your friends at beginnertriathlete.com.

McFuzz, it's really nice. I think we can get a very long list of names to sign off with - you can certainly include mine.

I like it too. If you want a bunch of names, how about re-posting in Tri Talk? That way everyone can see it and "sign" before you send it off.

My name is Dan Morrissey.  McFuzz, if you want to add the names, I'm all for it.  You can include all or just my first name...whatever you want.

Thanks.

Include my name, J.L. Burns, Port Charlotte Florida

I don't know if putting my home town is appropriate or not, I just thought it might give the family a sence of how and entire community that is literally worldwide morns their loss.

I'm so afraid of this happening to me, with the amount of elderly drivers down here it's aweful to ride on the road. I'm so afraid to ride by myself that I do most of my cycling training on the trainer. His poor children.

Man this sucks!!!! It's not supposed to be a life threatening sport.

That's a wonderful letter. Please add my name to it: Michael Mullane

I had thought about him potentially being a BT'er. We don't have a way to identify people other than what's in their profile, but I did a cursory check for an email address or user name that might be his. No matches.

Most of the credit goes to John (Hangloose) for the original text.

I did get a confirmation from the local tri group that he was a member. They are sending flowers and will be attending the memorial service.

Jesse "Jay" Jackson's memorial service will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Woolsey Wilton Funeral Home, 2408 W. Willow Knolls (corner of Allen & Willow Knolls), Peoria. The estimated time of the memorial service is 45 minutes. There will be no visitation.

Unfortunately, I'll be out of town Saturday. I'll plan to deliver the letter Friday afternoon.

Mike

Thanks for checking out the local scoop.  I really love that everyone is following through on this.

It's ironic what a great community and team we make when we're involved in such an "individual" sport and so many of us do our training alone.
