I'm going to Iowaman's house :-D

After the big blackout some years ago got really gungho about having a 'plan' but have slacked off and got tired of having "stuff" in the house.

I'm with the other poster, any big event, most won't make it.  Yeesh, the power goes out around here and folks are whinging about it like babies. Oy, more than a couple hours w/out a light switch you'd think the world ended.  I'll prey on their weaknesses, move in when they're weak and vulnerable, and make off with whatever they've got lying around.

I recently got a crank radio.

I think it's important to be prepared.  But I think I'm screwed.  How do you prepare if you're traveling for work every week?  I can't check all of the stuff I'd need in my luggage.

Edited to add: I always travel with my passport, though, in the event I need to quickly get out of the country.

Just watch an Oakland Raiders game...75% of their fan are wearing that stuff already.  The added bonus in attending a Raiders game is that in case of a zombie attack, you'll be safe.  Zombies feed on brains.  Therefore, zombies will avoid Oakland Coliseum.

I am a survivalist freak.  I have a false wall in my basement which leads into a panic room with at least 6 month supply of food, water and any other essential you can think off. I have a weapon and ammo supply that the local police department SWAT teams would be jealous of. I have go bags in both vehicles and as well as at home. I gas masks with all 3 filters and level 1 or A radiation suits for entire family. We, as a family, have planned escape routes for different crisis, with safe houses and meeting locations in all directions. This is something I take very serious and have spent lots of time and money perparing for. When something bad actually happens its to late to start being prepared. If nothing ever happens, no big deal. It gives me a piece of mind knowing I have taken care of my family.

Win.  (you live in SW IA?  I might need to come over)

I've got a semi auto zombie 12 guage & a .40 with lots of ammo.  We've got food & water for about two months.
When our youngest daughter finishes high school we're moving to about 50 acres outside of town and I plan to fortify the heck out of it.  Kind of like building the fort I always wanted to as a kid...  buhaha

realistically we have enough food for a little more than a month. meds for us and our dogs for 3 months. my wife and I are both experienced backpackers and hikers with good first aid and survival skills. we just moved into a new house (our first!) and first thing for the spring yard work is a large garden. no guns because I can't convince my wife to let us get one (though if I inherit my grandpas old shotgun and hunting rifle she can't say no) but I do have a bow and experience using it, though not for hunting. enough fishing gear to last me forever and live near plenty of places to fish.

if I had to get the hell out of dodge I can easily head up to the cascades, Mt Rainier, or the Olympics and do just fine with no real issues to speak of for a while. all in all not as prepared as some but more prepared than others.

We've got enough food to last a month or two and I have enough skills to cook it even if we don't have electricity or gas flowing through the pipe.  I can deal with basic first aid (so radiation would do us in, but a broken collarbone is no problem).  We don't have a large supply of fresh water, but I keep my GI system on high alert so would be OK taking water from the nearby streams or river.  No weapons so we'd be quickly overrun by hooligans or zombies but they'd be disappointed with the booty (seriously...someone broke into our house at Christmas years back, opened all the presents under the tree and left them there...)

I could probably last the night. Maybe. Much like Ray, I've got enough beer to keep me happy for the next 24 hours after that. Beyond that, if it's an eventuality, I'm not going to run.

Live rural with no close neighbors.  We are fairly self sufficient already.  Our family has a large year 'round garden where we can and not freeze most of the produce.  Also we have our own flock of chickens and raise pigs as well.  We also make large batches of soups, stews etc. and can it as well.  For water we are on our own well and have a spring on our property.  Also living in the middle of wooded land makes for plentiful game.  Still, it would be tough, but probably easier than it would be for city folks.

Listen for the "special phone" to ring, give my sequence of numbers, kiss my wife and daughter, inform BT and FB they may want to do the same.....within 15 minutes I'm in the air above the Gulf of Mexico watching the light show that can only be classified as annihilation.

I may have just said too much....

But seriously....I have enough guns and ammo to get what I need....

I'm prepared.  Way over prepared, really.  A life time of preparing.   I'd just as soon as not go through the zombapopcalypse.

At this point  in my life I much prefer porcelain plumbing fixtures and running water, thank-you-very-much.

OK, just completed emergency planning review.

Camping gear in the basement and extra fuel for the camp stove. check!

Two tanks of propane for the BBQ. check!

Case of water and canned food in pantry. check!

Bottle of scotch in bar and cigars in humidor. check!

I live in a large city, all that really matters is that according to my Garmin I'm 237 feet from the nearest pub. Yes, I really did check!

Oh come on, I'm warning you now, you are provoking me.  I'm ready.

- I've got the bullets, bandaids, and beans.

- I've got valuable skills for when the SHTF (gunsmith, build fire, shelter, reloader, hunter, water finder, edible plants identifyer, basic first aid and combat first aid)

- Fit

- Did I mention I have guns

- Enough food for two months, but skills to live off the wild a loonnnnggg time.

- First aid gear, including bullet wound trauma kits.

- FEMA NIMS trained and certified (I know exactly how the gov't is supposed to respond)

- Working knowledge of pretty much any firearm.

- Sniper skills and training.

- Knowledge to setup a sniper's hide or a hardened bunker out of my home.

- Go the 100 mile radius mapped out.  Got my immediate 600 yards mapped with landmarks for distance.

- Got bug out bags ready if we need to Get Out of Dodge.

- Did I mention I have a lot of guns and ammo.

- Ruthless if need be.

- And most importanly, I'm not niave enough to think this can't or won't happen.

Historical evidence has suggested The first 72 hours will be critical.  The gov't will not be helping until control is restored and maintained, FEMA comes after the local gov't can maintain control and then they do triage.  Most people will still be wondering after 6 hours why their blackberry's aren't working while the smart ones will be leaving.  Most people won't properly assess the situation until it's too late an you are trapped in the city with the looters, psychos, criminals and other people were to naive to think it couldn't happen.  When they finally do lead, they will likely follow the path of least resistance (highways, main roads, railroad tracks, rivers) where they will fall prey to the predators.

I wish we were more prepared but honestly do not have the space for it. We live in Houston so no basement and no hall/coat closet. We have 7 people in a 4 bedroom house. I have no idea where we would put 6 months worth of food & provisions for 7 people.

Provisions are luxeries.  Keep enough provisions to keep you comfortable for a month to 90 days.  Anthing beyond that is a real melt down and the average or even above average prepper cannot reasonably store beyond that.  Learn the skills, more importantly practice them.  An expert once told me, if a major pandemic occured 1/5 to a quarter of those who survive will starve to death because they will refuse to eat, not because food is not available.  By this I mean things like snake meat, bugs, wild plants, even dog food.  The food and provisions will be there, you just need to know where to look and you have to be willing to eat it.  Learn and etch the rule of 3's into your memory.

You won't live 3 minutes without without air, 3 hours without shelter (loosely defined), 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food.

Wow I thought some of your posts were jokes but there was no punch line at the end! I guess I am simply just not that worried about a one-in-a-trillion chance of that huge of a disaster striking my specific homestead. And that no other available help would ever come.

I think some of you have been watching too many "end of the world" movies... Tongue out
