My membership had expired and I was torn about renewing it. I've been a paying member for several years and have enjoyed much of what BT has to offer; training plans, articles, online coaching, and a sometimes great online community of fellow triathletes. Lately though, I've seen a shift in the attitude and demeanor of the forums, particularly in COJ. Seems to be more snarkiness, divisiveness, and negativity than I can ever recall. It really gave me pause, but in the end the features available to paid members outweigh the negative vibe. For now.

I'm sure most don't give a red rats patootie but I figured I'd just put it out there. Ok, I'm off to start a flip turn thread. At least the TT arguments are more edifying that the COJ arguments.

The main reason I turned my back on ST. I enjoy the banter here, but there really is no need to be mean as was witnessed in a recent thread. We all have differing opinions on a wide variety of topics. Respect those differences in order to widen the broad view. As Abraham Lincoln once said: "Be excellent to each other!"

Surprisingly, I share your feelings about COJ, specifically the TAN threads. While I jump in there every once in awhile, it has become a huge click (sp?) not not as inviting as it once was. The over the top flirting gets old and the 3 page discussions on what to eat are laughable.

So the easiest way to not get involved is to stay away and let them have their fun.

Clique.

And yes.

However, I still love BT.  It's way more fun to post rabblerousing statements here than on Craigslist RnR.  Go to TT for serious, come to CoJ for your laughs and giggles.

If only ... where are such threads?  We need more of them!

OK, you caught me in a lie.  I can't find a single one I've laughed at in a long while.

I'll weigh in later with what we do from a moderation standpoint, and why we do it.

Preliminarily, though, that the topics have been brought up - tone, forum norms, causals - whether it's a BT thing, vs an internet/sign of the times thing, are all discussed at length amongst the site principals. I'm not sure there's a right answer, either.

This coming from someone that's read almost every post in COJ for the last 6 years. God help me.

There are certain issues that by their nature people are going to be very passionate about.  I don't think it matters if you are discussing them with folks on BT or around the water cooler at work or at a family gathering.  Discussions involving politics, religion, etc. just have a way or spiraling out of contol because people can have such diverse beliefs concerning such things.

If you do not want to enter the fray don't do there.  Some people seem to thrive on heated debate and others get wounded by it.  I like to stick with the favorite movies, TV shows, travel advice, etc. while in COJ.  Political stuff is just too confrontation for me.  And I do think that the moderators do a great job of keeping things civil and respectful especially in the non-COJ areas.  Overall, I think it is a great site with many, many great people.

I do find it interesting how much time some actually do spend here online posting 10,000 times per week and 9,000 of them are in TAN or singles threads. Just a parting smart a$$ comment...being online 24/7 doesn't seem to be working for some of the singles so try unplugging for a few and get out and meet some people!

This is really rich being posted in a thread about BT becoming "snarky", "divisive" and "negative."

In COJ I try to ONLY participate in threads that I feel passionately about.....and I laugh ALOT!  I know some folks get their feelings hurt more than others, or get offended easier, it's life.  I don't read 50-70% of the threads here, and I don't read posts by some individuals....I just don't.

COJ is entertainment for me, and occasionally I see a viewpoint I hadn't considered and it makes me think.  But mostly, I don't spend alot of time thinking about it....it's not like some great world policy is being created here.

I will say this....if you get really frustrated about something that someone posts.....feel free to take it out on me.  I won't complain to management, and at least one of us will get a good laugh out of it.  Laughing

Hmmmm have you thought about getting a CAT scan done to assess the damage?? Or better yet, you should think about donating you brain to science for research into the effects of induced dementia!

Edtied because I forgot one of the Ss in assess and the filters dumped it.

Day 3200, Moderator island

I don't know if I can go on. The discontent among the prisoners is rising, and the guards seem powerless to stop it. They listen to everything we say with startling regularity, yet can do nothing. Banishment, perhaps.... Will there be a riot? Too scary to contemplate. Making matters worse, there seems to be differing sets of rules for the two main populations. I actually heard an inmate grumbling because we have too much freedom. Can you imagine? This place is a twisted mockery of real life...I should be careful: as someone who's tasted the lash of banishment more than once by the dread Marmahamer, that ego-maniacal tyrant.... oh god. I feel his brutal eyes on me aga

Brilliant idea.   While I never take anything on COJ personally, I do see how at times folks carry things too far.  I have always paid the membership even when not using many of the resources because I gained so much in my early years of racing and that is worth keeping the site going for others IMHO.

I took particular offense to this....

"Really? Nick "I guess I have to say it. I'm not going to be the Alabama coach." Saban makes you proud? That guy makes my skin crawl."

That snarkiness, divisiveness and negativity....gets me too Smile

I tend to agree with tuwood.  Even though I've only been here a few years, I think part of the issue is just a sign of the times and the polarity of the issues, being an election year, etc.  I enjoy some of the discussion, because it allows other views that I may not typically find in other places, especially since there are folks from all over the country on BT, and outside the US.

I can't comment on TAN, as I don't spend much time there.  Maybe I should.  Three page discussions about eating sound interesting...

Did it take you to long find that, or do you have it book marked?

Here's my point on the whole thing; I can be very opinionated and a bit snarky, but when I voiced my opinion that Nick Saban makes my skin crawl, it was my opinion about him. I did NOT take a direct and personal shot at those who like him. I did not make a blanket statement that I insisted was the only way to see things and then belittle and bully anyone who disagreed with me. I did not state that anyone else was wrong for their opinion or suggest that their argument that he was not a creep had no validity That's what I see as the difference in COJ of late.

Of course you also have those who whine about everything and make it a point to look for ways to be offended by what other people have said.

Brilliant idea! That way you can ignore who you want and it would take the moderators out of the equation and they can stick to monitoring people misbehaving against the TOS of the site .. not offending the 1 or 2 or 300 people that are offended by the offending offender.

I don't need a button, I do that on my own anyway.

It is just not that big a deal to me.  There are a few people that matter beyond that most just don't amount to a hill of beans in my book.  That is not to say I discount them as people but I discount them as people important to my life.  Those that do matter I can have a discussion with if any issues come up.  Others it does not matter what I say they have their view of things/me and I have mine.  If, for some reason, I start getting all worked up I shut it off and do something else.

I also don't know how that would work with the quotes feature.
