Master 3022 | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success Adding in cycling on saturday (90 minutes), cycling on Sunday (52 miles in the hills around Austin - awesome I might add) and running this afternoon (6 miles on the trails in the Austin Greenbelt - rugged but a blast). My legs are sort of cooked. Expert 1109 Guatemala | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success Originally posted by jackiep Gabe or any other Ironman veterans: I'm contemplating moving up to the full iron distance. Help me out here. IM Texas, IM FL, IM Cozumel (Gabe you've done two out of the three) I'm weakest on the swim, but I'm working on that. Also, for those of you that have trained for that distance, what does the typical training week look like in the middle of your plan? Jackie, glad to hear you are thinking about your 1st full IM; you are a tough girl and I know you will do great! My thoughts on the races you mentioned: For you I would recommend IMTX as your first one. You have experience it twice as a spectator already while cheering Ernesto in 2011 and me in 2012, so you know how much fun it is. Second, it is close to your home in Austin and a short drive. Just the fact that you can travel by car without having to deal with bike assembly/disassembly, travelling with a big bike case, airline fees, etc. is a big plus. You can also train on the course since it is not too far from Austin. Finally, IMTX (like IMCOZ) don't fill up quickly like IMFL (in 4-5 minutes), so you can take your time thinking about it. BTW, this year it was way cooler and it was wetsuit legal (another plus) I would also recommend IMCozumel since it is a great destination for a race and for a fun celebration/recovery after the race. As Joe mentioned, the head winds were tough in the eastern side of the Island (about a 20k stretch and you go through it 3 times), but the beautiful ocean views help to compensate for some of the suffering :-) The swim has now been modified since my race last year and now you swim from point to point with the current in your favor, which makes up for a fast swim. I also am not a fan of the swim, but swimming in the crystal clear waters of Cozumel while enjoying the fish life really makes up for a great swim. Also the swim is only 10% of the total IM experience, so nothing to worry too much about. Finally, nothing like the feeling of finishing a full IM race along with the journey to get there. It is so good, that I actually forget about the pain and want to do it all over again and again (once you are done with the race of course). I might do IMTX next year again, so it would be great to see you there!

Member 131 Colorado | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success Wow, I really got behind last week and then I couldn't figure out where our forum went! Guess that's what happens when I don't keep up. First I'm adding in most of last week for the challenge: Tues, Wed and Thurs I ran 3 miles each, on Saturday it was 2 (day-before-the-marathon taper stuff), and then the 26.2 on Sunday. Mark 16 18:46:00 Joe 17 16:48:09 Jackie 13 18:04:12 Jim 12 10:22:12 Bruno 08 10:10:00 Mitch 14 18:15:00 Lisa 13 17:07:16 Dennis 12 14:43:45 Drew 10 11:56:05 Gabe 7 10:10:45 Now bio: NAME: realrellim/Lisa STORY: Started running early in 2001 because the Bolder Boulder 10K's motto was "O yes you can!" and I wanted to see if it was true. It was! Also, I discovered that I liked running. I'd always been active in informal ways but never part of a team or anything like that. I've been running ever since, have done every Bolder Boulder since 2001 except in 2010 'cause I'd just had child #2. There have been bunches of half marathons along the way, and I just ran marathon #4 yesterday. I did my first sprint triathlon in 2011 and then did a second one that summer since I was already trained. I did another one last summer after purchasing a road bike (yay!), and have my sights set on my first Olympic-distance tri this August. In my non-exercising life, I usually work as a part-time adjunct teaching music appreciation and world music classes. Lately, I've mostly been doing some freelance editing work because enrollment dropped and my classes were cut. FAMILY STATUS: married with two kids, ages 4 and 9. (ETA: the avatar pic is about three years old. The oldest doesn't fit in the double jogger anymore, and the double jogger has been sold off anyhow. One of these days I'll update it.) CURRENT TRAINING: I just finished marathon training, with 5 days a week of running and 1 of cross-training (mostly biking), with lots of 40-mile weeks and a few 50-mile weeks in there too. I'm thinking my goal is to run 4 days a week, bike 3-4 days a week, and swim 2-3 days a week until August's triathlon but I haven't figured out how that will work out. KEY RACES: Colfax Marathon (which I just ran--see below). Winter Park Half Marathon, June 28. Epic Relay Rocky Mountain, which we're running as an ultra-relay on July 18-19. I just got my leg assignment today and I'll be covering 35 or 36 miles. Beyond the Horizon Olympic Distance Triathlon, August 16. WEIGHTLOSS: not really an issue. And now that the bio's over, I'd like to announce that I ran my first sub-4:00 marathon yesterday! I'm pretty sore today, but happy. It did bring this video to mind though: http://youtu.be/m-hCuYjvw2I Edited by realrellim 2014-05-19 11:39 PM |

Nice brick, Bruno. Keeping the running leg of the brick to no more than 30 mins unless you are training for long course or IM. The value of the brick is to learn to get your feet under you after being in the saddle and to run with fatigue. Running too long off the bike can do more harm than good. Even where I did 2-3 hr rides, I never run more than 45 mins. |

Coming from a Marathon background... 30 minutes on Monday seemed like it was not enough, but I was with a slow friend so in the end, I guess that was a good thing! My race is on June 15th. So with my bum hamstring I am on pace to swim 5x per week over the last two weeks. Not surprisingly, my swimming is really improving.
