I'm pretty excited to see so many Wings fans in this group! Unfortunately game 6 just ended in a loss.. can't blame Osgood though he played great. No way we lose game 7 at the Joe.

chartierm22 - 2009-06-09 10:37 PM Well spent 45min on the rollers tonight.  I need some pointers on being able to bike with one hand.  I can not for the life of me take one hand off the handle bars.  (Really new to the whole bikeing thing, in case you couldn't tell )  Also my hands start to hurt then go numb after awhile.  Do they just need to get used to rideing?  I think know that biking is my least favorite part.  Pretty sure I just need to get more comfortable with it and get me a pair of bike shorts.

Couple thoughts...make sure you are wearing biking gloves. The padding will help.  If you're nervous on the bike, you may be gripping the bars too tightly or leaning too heavily on the bars.  Try to engage your core so that your arms are just lightly supporting the upper body.  As for getting used to riding with one hand, try that in an empty parking lot.  I think rollers are really tough to ride on.  Since you are still new to biking, if you have to ride indoors it might be worth trying a trainer instead of rollers.

enders_shadow - 2009-06-09 6:02 PM I should edit the story above before I sound like a stalker. We did not know until breakfast the first morning at the B&B that we were down the street from Osgood. The hosts were chatting about our activities while we were there, learned we were huge Wings fans, and then told us about the Osgoods. Just wanted to make sure that I didn't look totally nuts.

Have you ever smelled a hockey player after the game.....OMG!  We may smell after a tri...but we don't have tons of equipment and padding that also smell!!!  EWWW!!  (That is not saying I wouldn't date a hot hockey player, tho!)

My son played HS ice hockey and there were a few times we had to open the car windows on the ride home. He was not amused.

I'm pretty good at riding with one hand outside but it is more difficult on the rollers. I know I tend to grip too tightly when I'm on the rollers. Just keep at it and it will get better and easier.

It sounds like you are gripping the bars way too hard.  Rollers are a lot harder than riding on the road.  Having a strong core will also help support you and let you not grip the bars so tight.

doctorbob18 - 2009-06-08 2:15 AM thank you so much to everyone who gave me an inspire for the race this weekend, but unfortunately i did not perform well. It was olympic distance and i was exiting T2 at 1:45:00 and with how awesome my run training has been, breaking 2:30:00 seemed inevitable. As soon as i exited transition the abdominal craps started. I've never been in so much pain. It took me 23 minutes to cover the first two miles. After that I finallly gave into the pain and stayed at a pace that was barely tolerable (about 9:30). I wanted to cry because I knew I was throwing a great race and all my hard training away, but there was nothing I could do.

I hope others had a better weekend than me!
So sorry to hear about your race and I hope you are feeling better. Sad to say that your "barely tolerable" pace of 9:30 would be a good race pace for me!! Pretty sad (i know) but hopefully will cheer you up and help you keep things in perspective!! LOL !!well wishes toppage!!

Dana: Hey now no knockin where you are at! You are off the couch and doing this! When I started I couldn't even run 1/2 a block! Try not to compare yourself with others but against your own times. Look to see how far you have come!

Great finish - a PR for your run sounds AWESOME!! Sounds like it was a tough swim and some tough weather overall but you did great. Congratulations!

Thanks! Now that I can reflect on it, it was tough and I have lots to practice but I did it and I am proud of that!

surfnturf - 2009-06-09 8:52 AM Morning June Bugs! I got up early and ran 3.5 miles on the beach. It was cool 'cause I got to see the sunrise which was beautiful this morning! Still struggling with fitting my workouts into my new work schedule. I switched to part-time morning (9-1pm) in order to deal with my kids for the summer!

Your runs sounds beautiful!

lkc01234 - 2009-06-09 11:55 AM I did 40 minutes this morning!  This is the longest I've run...maybe ever!  "Unfortunately" I'm still running at my slow pace - and only went about 2.5 miles (maybe 2.6 or 2.7).

Way to get the time in!

Rollers are not the best place to learn one-handed riding.   Just sayin'.

You'll end up finding the place on the handlebars that are the most comfortable for you.  I can ride on the hoods FOR-EV-ER...

Sounds like your bars may be too low.  If you've got room on your steerer, add a few more spacers, or get a bike fitting.

Best way to learn one-handed riding.  Start out with both hands nearer to the stem.  That way you have better control when you let go with one hand.

One-handed riding in aero position is a little more difficult.  Just keep practicing.

It is a nice feeling.  I'm trying to get in the habit of morning runs.  It's going to be way too hot to run after work in a few weeks.  Last year, I wasn't consistent enough with my mid-week runs for marathon training, so I'm thinking the morning runs will help.

Have you had your bike fitted? If your fit isn't quite right and your elbows are locked it it can make you hands go numb. Also if you are supporting a lot of your body weight on your arms, which is common to do if your seat is uncomfortable, it will make your hands go numb. As far as being able to bike with one hand... I think it just takes time to get comfortable with balance on the bike.

I am going a bit nuts! Can't believe it's only 3 days til Boise 70.3... taper madness has definitely set in. I feel like I should be out doing long workouts to prepare and I keep having to remind myself that it won't do any good at this point.
