Nawww, they're like a prop gun...useless!

I'll bring my Hk USP .40 compact over with the paddle holster - that should suffice!  :D

I think the water temp last year 62 degrees.  It's still in 80s during the day time so that makes sense.  I'm doing the OWS race in it this weekend and will let everyone know the quality, temp, etc..

I went to the site too - I suspect that he's taking temp at or near the surface, so its quite likely correct in that context, given the temps they get in Tempe this time of year in the daytime.

Anything 60+ will seem downright balmy compared to the open-water temps we've had all summer here in SoCal.  Hell, I'm cool with 58F for that matter...its only uncomfortable for a minute or two until your face gets used to it.  I'm more concerned with the murkiness than anything else.  Its not reassuring when the description of the swim venue provided by WTC goes something like "the water is comfortable, but with limited visibility (you can barely see your hand in front of you in the water)..."...which also means I probably won't see the size 12 connected to the guy in front of me that shatters my eye socket or breaks my nose, lol.

Thankfully, the swim is such a small part of the entire day that its not worth dwelling upon...

Agree.. If you're under a 1:20ish swimmer, I don't think you'll have problems being too cold.  I found it a bit shocking when I first jumped in but I don't remember being uncomfortably cold until I started riding my bike (in wet clothes).  It's the swimmers who are in the water for a long period time that I heard were having problems.

I feel the bigger issues are: (1) The sun will be in your face the first half of the swim... and (2) you can't see anything in the water (unless the new water is better quality).  Luckily, it's a VERY straight forward swim and there are easy objects (buildings, bridges) to sight off of.

My friend got to swim in Tempe Town Lake this morning because she's a representative for the company (DCB Adventures) that's putting on the open water swim race this weekend.  She said the water was a lot more clear

LOL, welcome to the 62 year old club, even though my Ironman days are over for the time being.  My first was at age 57, so it's up to you, now you're carrying the flag for the grey haired community!

The website says that they typically publish the Athlete Information Guide 2 weeks before the race.

Shouldn't be too bad.  Don't forget, we don't do the daylight savings thing, so we didn't turn the clocks back!
