Mele Kalikimaka!

Now that is almost TOO funny!
I trust everybody made it on the "nice" list this year and got all the triathlon gear they asked for from Santa?

Can you believe it has been exactly 5 months since we all signed up for this crazy race?!? Where does the time go???! I will panic about it tommorow - til then, I hope everybody has a great day!

Wow! Then that must mean it is 7 months until race day!

I am doing the 30 Week Don Fink Be Iron Fit training plan... which means it starts on Monday 12/27. Thankfully Monday is a rest day so it actually officially starts on 12/28.

For some reason I'm nervous about starting the plan but excited at the same time! Maybe it has soemthing to do with the snow. It will be fun to look back on race day and think about how day one of the training program there was a blizzard going up the east coast!

I am cracking myself up with my profile picture and since the image is small wanted to clarify that no, it is not me, and yes it is Jane Fonda.  I greatly admire Jane. Jane made it ok for us gals to exercise! (I'll never forget growing up, my mom suiting up in striped leotards and leg warmers to jazzercise)...

Reminds me of a scene in Mad Men where the housewives (Betty) and her friends make fun of another friend who has taken to walking around the neighborhood for exercise (can you imagine if she was running!)...I would have gone crazy in the 1960's

Anyway hopefully I'll try to get a better/ real picture at some point. Kate

Ryan... I did that program for IMCdA in 2009, it was an awesome book. It really taught me how to manage my time. Due to a hip injury and possible replacement (i'm only 43) needed down the road, I hired a coach so that I can be monitored a little more closely. This year for me its about finishing pain free and not needing a new hip when I'm finished... jb

jborneman3 - Thanks for the feedback! Which one of the programs did you do? Glad to hear that it served you well. I debated between that and several other plans but really liked the volume and distribution between the sports and the length of the program.

kr140.6 - How did your swim day 1 go? Its funny that the length of the first swim workout was longer than anything I ever did to train for an Olympic tri.

I debated for a while, but ended up doing the competitive program. I felt that there wasnt much difference between the competitve and the intermediate program. I also changed it a bit, I backed off some of the Sunday rides due to family... I couldnt do my long runs and then turn around later in the day and do another ride after spending saturday mornings on the bike. The book is an awesome read...

Hi Ryan.. yes swimming and me, let's just say it ain't pretty.  BTW are you doing intermediate program?  I am...but I may do the "just finish" for the swim part Embarassed(I know this is the reverse of common advice I have read which says "work hardest on your weakest link!")  Kate

Rjohnson, I am doing the Be Ironfit 30-week Intermediate plan as well.  Everyone keeps saying there isn't much of a difference between the Intermediate and the Competitive plan.  I looked at both ....and YEAH, I see a HUGE difference.  Just my observation   Also, thanks for posting that LP Winter pic.  Very funny!!

So.... we're already down to 29 weeks and 4 days.  Before you know it it'll be 20 weeks, 10 weeks, taper, and then Race Day!!!  The days are already getting longer from here on out.  Yup, before you know it we'll be standing on the shore of Mirror Lake at dawn, the Pro's will have just started, and it'll be 10 minutes before we start our day.  Happy New Year everyone

DC - You are using it too? That's great!!!

I didn't know there were so many people here who are using that plan. Good to know. I am doing the competitive program. I wish there was a forum here or on some website to post questions about this training plan. I dont want to clog up this one with them but I had some questions about the strength training part and rearranging the plan to fit in practice races.

Happy New Year Lake Placid-ers! 2011 is our year! :-)

Dude, there is totally a forum where you can post a question about any Ironman training program.  http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/forum-view.asp?fid=20#s   The Forum is Iron Distance Training Talk.  Also try using the search function.  Search "Be IronFit" and you'll get LOTS of results.

God Bless you and best of luck with the Competitive Plan.  That is a lot of volume - at least it would be for me.  I hope you Rock it!!!

Wishing you all a happy, healthy, injury free 2011!

I look forward to seeing fellow BTers at Lake Placid.  I am volunteering in the women's transition area.  I raced LP this year and volunteered the year before.  My husband, arrogant_bastard, will be out there with you all on race day.  We're staying at that hotel just above the oval (Northwoods??).

If you have any questions about following the BT plan feel free to send me a message. I used the free plan to train for IMLP and a friend paid for the intermediate plan.  Also, feel free to ask me about the swim.  I came from pretty strong swim background and was still shocked by the chaos in the water on race day.

My biggest bits of advice-don't underestimate how much cycling you should do for training and nail your nutrition plan before race day.  I thought it was a great idea to put a caffeinated gel in my special needs bag for the run and honestly, there is nothing "special" about a gel when you're that far into the race! (You've already been offered gels and numerous aid stations by that point).

I have a pretty detailed description of my race day, so feel free to check out my report.

Happy New Year!!!!

I aged up today...woot who thought turning 50 would be so exciting!

I think at last year's IMLP there were about half as many w50-54 than w45-49.

My month was going well until I had pen anserine bursitis flair up so had to take some time off running and just easing back into it.  I don't think I've had a month where I've spent more time swimming than biked or run before. I'm working through Finding Freestyle program this off season. For about a month after IMFL my desire to ride my bike was gone but it's come back. I'm in Minnesota for the holidays sans bike which has helped me want to get back at it when I get home. I'll start structured training with my coach in January.

December's totals:
Bike:8h 56m 38s  - 146 Mi
Run:10h 34m 55s  - 51.26 Mi
Swim:13h 16m 02s  - 26000 Yd

2010 totals
Bike:263h 09m 19s  - 4151.65 Mi
Run:136h 07m 23s  - 666.89 Mi
Swim:131h 41m 16s  - 308082.9 Y

Nice numbers, Kathy!

I went outside on my TT bike for the first time in a LONG time yesterday. Got 17 miles in and couldn't stay in the aero position any longer. My sit bones couldn't take it anymore!!!!

Time to swap the road bike out for the TT bike on the trainer....I remember I could spend 4 hours in the aero position without moving and still be comfy....

mndymond - 2010-12-02 12:25 AM Well I hope I find the Lake Placid Spinverals less annoying! I normally have about 2 different distractors anyways even when watching a Spinverals...I get a little bit too ADD for one solid form of media on the trainer. I normally have the DVD playing with either music or TV/movie on my computer to watch on the side. Sometimes notes...depends on my mood.

We will see how it goes!

Hey Mndymond - Was wondering if you have watched the spinervals DVD yet? I am going to order it too and am wondering what I am in store for.

Also probably going to order the Raymond Britt book mentioned here as well.

Great work to everyone on your training so far!
