SSMinnow - 2010-12-29 6:31 AM WOO-HOO, it's WEDNESDAY!!!!  Check your calendars and let us know if you're racing this weekend!  Details people....

For those of us not toeing the line, what's the one goal you are absolutely going to work your tail off to nail in ' 11? what're you going to do to get there?

No racing yet but ask me next week.  ;-)

'11 goal - 3:45 marathon at Shamrock in March.  Maybe if I keep telling myself I can do enough times it will happen.  Anyway, I'm a little behind in my training.  I was hoping to go to Disney with more miles but I still have 10 weeks after Disney to get there.  Feb. 6 will be a big day.

My coach has a 26k race pace run that he likes to do 6 weeks out for a good gauge on what a runner can do come race day.  So I think the plan is to build up to that practice race then recover a week and build again for a few weeks before tapering.  I want to reproduce my race day as much as I can to both get an accurate time and practice the prep, nutrition and mental toughness.  I want to make myself hurt so I know I can do it come race day.

After Disney I want to talk to my coach about more longer tempo runs instead of pounding out easy long runs.  I can run the faster track intervals and I can run all day long in low Z2.  I really need practice at medium distance Z3 runs.

Any thoughts out there from our esteemed Boston qualifiers?  There seem to be so many approaches to training for that run effort.  After several years of endurance training and learning what makes me tick, I think I would benefit more from Hanson brother's approach to marathon training.

Sorry Sam, which ones are you referencing?

or

Tony made me watch that awful movie a few months ago and now I bet you have the MMMbop song stuck in your head!

Just thought I'd pop back in and say hello.  Glad to see the group is charging on without me.  25 pages, wow!  I know how this group rambles so if there is anything really important someone will fill me in.  We aren't home yet but in the middle of family drama.  The short of it is we won't be making the scheduled detour through WI to see the hubby's family due to an outbreak of a nasty stomach bug.  Of course the MIL is not taking it very well at all.  Drama, gotta love it.

Returning home this weekend and start my official IM training plan on Monday. I've been chatting back and forth with my coach on tightening up the first calendar.  Watch out Trevor, it's game on time!!!!!

BTW, why the hell is Rev 3 so freakin' expensive?!?!?  I'm unemployed remember!!!

Welcome to all the new members.  Looking forward to getting to know everyone.  Suzy and Doug, I hope your appendages are feeling better.  Rob, I hope your brother is better as well.

Happy New Year everyone!

Hi Peeps......Question Ahead:

Think hard, what's the one concern you have going into the '11 season????  Maybe the brainiacs of the group can help (and yes, Fatty that also includes you!)

Staying healthy and being able to put enough time into training..  somehow between my last race and now i've developed tendinitis in the left shoulder and my PT told me to just rest and ice it and not swim..  It's been months since I swam and I still have problems with it though it feels a bit better.  The PT says it can flair up again anytime.   I'm itching to swim again.  I still don't know how I developed it..  It flaired-up literally over night and not after swimming or any physical activity..  weird..

Things are improving. As I am not going to be able to race, if you have not signed up yet I can transfer mine to you. Let me know. (I signed up for the half). BTW Harold is planning on racing. Sorry about the stomach bug. We are at my parents and my Mom has a virus in her ear. She gets real dizzy. No medication as it will go away on its own. Heading to great Wolf Lodge for New Years.

So I assume I do a warmup and then run my a$$ off for 10 or 15 minutes?

Anyone ever get severe cramps in their calves or hamstrings?

Some workouts I have on the trainer have me come to a complete stop in the big ring front and small back, then explode as hard as I can.

Most times when I do this my calf siezes up completely, it hurts enough to cry,  I've had to have sam unclip my foot for me because it hurt so bad and I couldn't move.

Today in the pool I was doing some sprints and tried to push off the wall as hard as I could and my hamstring siezed up similar to the way my calf does.  LOL our "lifeguard" is usually staring up at the wall or sleeping, so luckilly it's a shallow pool or I would have been in trouble.

When these happen I am fully warmed up, they tend to be around the middle of the workout.  I've been doing a lot more stretching lately to help with flexibility, so not sure what else I can do there.

Anyone else ever have these or any ideas how to stop them?

Ok so my youngest sister is looking to try her hand at triathlons this summer but she is broke with student loans and just out of college and can't afford a bike.  So I'm looking to buy her something 100-200 range to see if she even likes the sport.  She's been training hard getting up early to take a spinning class and running with our other sister so I thought I'd try and help her out.  What do you guys suggest is there a brand or model I can look for used that should fall into that range.

I would check out craigslist for something in that range.  You'll probably end up with a more recent mountain bike/hybrid or a much older road bike.

The more recent mountain bike/hybrid will probably be in better shape than the road bike, you don't want it to break down on her.

If you can find a trek/specialized might be better than the huffy/schwinn at that same price.

Not sure this is valid, but I always heard that cramps could be a sign of not having enough electrolytes.  But I will defer to others more knowledgeable in the group respond.

fattyfatfat - 2010-12-29 8:06 AM from reading your race report,  maybe what happened before the run had a lot to do with what happened during the run leading up to you max hr at 218!!!  holy cow man, i'd be dead!!!  i can't imagine where my hr would be swimming in 93 degree water.  then, this on the bike "First lap had a hard time catching my breath." and all this all with a heat index of 101.

we've all been there and will be there again, ha!  its the nature of this.  you'll be rocking the run this year.  but as basic as this sounds you've got to remember that its three sports and a whole lot of thinking that go into this.  setting yourself up for the run is huge.

Oh ya.. I learned soooo much from that event it was crazy. That was my first event ever. I was still nice and fat.. Wait I still am.. just no where near that. Ya the heat of that pool set me up for everything that day. First ever race, funny how you keep telling yourself to slow down and do this just like how you trained.. Yet I didn't listen to myself. Funny My wife says I never listen to her either. Maybe I have selective hearing. hahaha..

I think I will be able to make a HUGE differance this year. I have been doing some local 5k running races and need to build on it. By the endof the season I could do 5km runs. But had a hard time time doing 2.5K at the end of the triathlon. so I def need and will have a much better BASE this year leading into this. So I can only assume I need to be able to run 10 + KM this year to finish 5K at the end of a Sprint.

This Group I am sure will help me a lot. Thanks for the input so far.

fattyfatfat - 2010-12-29 8:06 AM from reading your race report,  maybe what happened before the run had a lot to do with what happened during the run leading up to you max hr at 218!!!  holy cow man, i'd be dead!!!  i can't imagine where my hr would be swimming in 93 degree water.  then, this on the bike "First lap had a hard time catching my breath." and all this all with a heat index of 101.

we've all been there and will be there again, ha!  its the nature of this.  you'll be rocking the run this year.  but as basic as this sounds you've got to remember that its three sports and a whole lot of thinking that go into this.  setting yourself up for the run is huge.

That is huge. A few of us struggle with that. When you get out of T2, you feel like you can run 100 miles an hour.
But you have to believe that this crazy fast can not hold for XX amount of kms.

there is a lot of talk here about "Entering the hurt locker",etc.
I think when you are relatively 'new' that is a place that you can not get to.
Because you are so unsure of being able to 'do the distance'.
I know for me, pacing has been and will continue to be one of the biggest learnings.

dalessit - 2010-12-29 1:21 PM Anyone ever get severe cramps in their calves or hamstrings?

Most times when I do this my calf siezes up completely, it hurts enough to cry, REALLY?  I've had to have sam unclip my foot for me because it hurt so bad and I couldn't move.

My vote is your cramping has to have something to do with this type of training ???
