ratherbeswimming - 2012-01-12 5:12 PM Struggling a bit with the marathon training this week. I pushed a little hard at Ragnar, and I think I'm paying for it. Recurring blister, a little chafing, random pains (nothing consistent through a run or even in both runs) ... or maybe I'm just being a wimp? Still mentally and physically recovering? Hm.

Maybe stick to some swimming and easy spinning for a week and let the body recovery?  Nothing like some chafing though.

My tempo ride was a bit of a failure tonight.  Just couldn't hold the HR.  I have a harder time on the trainer anyways but I usually am better then that.  Lingering sickness I am sure.  I am much better but very sore throat and a little weakness.  Did it on the trainer in the backyard.  I could have hit the road but the trainer in the backyard I am discovering is not horrible.  Finished up as the backyard was turning pink from the setting sun and the military helicopters were flying overhead (I am fairly close to the base).  The backyard is full of trees which attracts lots of song birds and the occasional hawk looking for a meal.  Not bad if you have to be on the drainer.

My swim kinda sucks.  It was getting better before my month off (stupid pool), to the point where I actually finally had a easy, medium, and fast speed.  Use to be it was all the same regardless of effort.  lol  So starting next week I will be back in the pool.  I am a bit concerned about my plan and how many yards per swim I am scheduled for (well, I am concerned for my shoulders) but they are going to be about 3500, 4000, 3500, and then I think in a week or two after that it bumps each up by 500.  I think at this point on those numbers I should get back my endurance pretty quickly.  Question is, should I go more often?  Do I really have any hope of getting faster by April by swimming more often?  I guess I am wondering if the gains would be worth the drain on my time?

Oh, my times before the layoff were about 2:00 per 100yds.  I could on speed work get to 1:50.  My "easy" swims were about 2:10, which use to be the speed regardless of effort

Send me a video of you swimming. A front view and a side view. If you can take underwater video even better.

This is from July, but not sure a lot changed.  I have been working mostly on not crossing over so if anything changed that would be the main thing.

Wow, winter wonderland here in Toronto this morning!  It's fun - except for traffic - walking to the subway i saw a car spin out.  thankfully the road was relatively quiet and the car nearest was being cautious.

Anyway, feeling phlegmy and tired.  no workouts last night.  Not sure i will do anything today since we are babysitting our nieces tonight while the BIL/SIL go on a date. They are 4 and 6 so it will be a workout of its own! hahahaha! I give parents credit for doing it full-time.

i am not feeling good, i am achy, tired and cranky, i have skipped workouts since wednesday...blech.....

I had a dream last night that i got out of the swim at my "A" half iron race and wandered around looking for transition and my bike....sulking like a little girl....till i had lost like an hour, only to realize they had changed the transition area to a ways away from swim out, and i had wandered the wrong way as bikers and runners passed me while i was looking.  It was certainly a weird dream, anyone care to over analyze??  LOL

5 min FTP power test for me this morning. I was not looking forward to this one as I knew the numbers would no have change when compared to the first one. Anyway, glad I did it as I have a number to work with now.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/141241808#

I have not downloaded to the Cycleops nor Cheetah to see in detail. I have to learn how to compare. I thought I was going to burn out half way but I had some left in the tank. I think the numbers would have been better if I had done this in the afternoon.

We finally got some snow last night - about 4 inches - much better than looking at all the brown.

This morning I finally got in a quality ride done on the bike.  It has been about 10 days since I got a good ride done.  I did 4x10' intervals ranging from 85-95%FTP.  Legs felt good again.  I immediately went into a snow shoveling brick

Going to slap on the yak traks and make my way through the snow at lunch.

Thomas - I usually just try to do my tests at the same time i do most of my workouts.  This for me is in the morning.  I actually feel like I do a bit better in the afternoon after I have actually woke up kinda like you mention.  I would just do the next test at the same time.  A 20 minute test and 5 minute test this week...you da man!

A variation on the test dream, where you show up unprepared or don't know there's a test that day, or forgot to study.   Tri dreams are always weird.....

Run and swim last night, pretty much exhausted me.  But I surprised myself by getting up early and doing an hour on the trainer, so now I get my Friday night off

Weekend has a long ride and (maybe) short run after, about 5-6 trail run Sunday.  Might swim. Might not. Probably won't

I have a question that I am a little embarrassed to admit I know nothing about after 6 years in the sport, but sponsorships.  I get teams like zoot and wattie ink for the really fast guys like bryan and fastyellow, I also have heard of the arrangements where you can buy their product/kit at a reduced price if you sign up, but I know there are also people "sponsored" that aren't necessarily ripping it up and getting on the podium (not directed at you, Rudy  )

So how do these things work?  How do people get hooked up?  What are the various types of arrangements and what benefits are people getting?

Not looking at how to get one for me, just curious as I see lots of sig lines with this info in it, etc.

Starting to work the Lon runs up on the weekends. 50 minutes today, didn't go so bad but was hoping for an easier effort.

Doing some home improvement projects (gas fire pit & flagstone patio) that I promised the GF I'd finish after AZ. So, Keeping my promise. Hope to get out for a 6 mi trail run in the A M.

I noticed this group is much more active on the board during the week. I really thought it would be  more on the weekends. It gets so quiet on here. Funny.

Long ride today.  Nice to get back on the bike/road but I could have done without the wind.  Wind means a fair amount of dust, especially when you bike past the pecan farms on the way up to Madera during harvest time.  Eyes are still full of dust.

Does that stir up allergies for you?

Yeah, sure does.  Tucson use to be a great place to live if you have allergies but no anymore.  As people have moved here they have brought in a ton of plants that seem to have made Tucson worse then any other place I have lived.
