Question: There is a new Irongirl race near where I live, a great lake and lots of good hills to ride and run. It cost $145.00 to register. It is a sprint tri. Is this price high? I have never seen a sprint cost so much.

That sounds like a lot of $$, but I have two thoughts:

1.  If you want to do the race and you have the $$, then do it.

2.  If you want to do the race and don't have the $$, do the race, take video, and then sell the video to Trevor to recoup your entry fee Laughing

P.S.  This group is on fire today!!

Matt, good to see you back.

Jayne, that is a good one.

Trevor how much $$ ?

Linda

I am doing two sprints this year.  One is $45 and the other $65 with early bird registration. I think you're paying for the name and hoopla.  Both of mine are very local small events.  Totally fun and totally cheap!

I don't know if we're supposed to post our workouts but I figure it'd be a good thing to do. My big race is in 2 weeks so these aren't my typical workouts. I'm cranking up the intensity for the next few days before I begin my official taper.

Yesterday - Brick
Stationary bike - 20 minute warm up followed by 10 minutes at race pace
Run - 5x5 minute race pace (7:15) w/ 3 minute slow jog in between

Today - Trainer & Brick
Trainer:
45 minutes - practice aero w/ moderate intensity

Brick:
1 Hour spin
20 minute run at race pace (held about a 7:10 pace)

I felt very good today off of the bike. My trainer session and spin were only an hour and a half apart so my legs were pretty shot. Nevertheless, I was very pleased with the pace I was able to hold - I completed a little less than 3 miles in 20 minutes. Feel free to comment on this workout or any future workouts that I post. I would love some feedback. Oh, and here's another picture from a bike ride a few weeks ago. Hopefully I have more success posting my pictures than many of you!

OK, kids. I don't know what's in Fatty's powerpoint, but here's what I do to post photos:

  • upload image to my BT album (must be small file, so first I'll reduce the resolution using Preview)
  • copy the URL of the image in my BT album
  • in a post, click on the photo icon (picture of a tree) and paste the image URL into the little box there
  • hit the insert button

If you're posting an image that's already online, you can skip the first step and just copy the image URL, though it doesn't work from FB anymore.

Here's a pic from my album, from my last trip to DC (for Kevin):

Can't post pics from the iPad, but I'm in Hawaii and you all aren't, so neener neener!!! Just had to say hi and welcome to the new peeps. Long walk on the beach with my favorite 9-year-old today... My calves felt it! Big day of boogie boarding, snorkeling, and hanging out tomorrow with two of my tri-training girlfriends and their families -- fun!! Thanks for channeling my inner Yoda, Kim!!

Love,

Kayla

This is an old photo from 09, but my goal is to get back in that shape. I lost 55lbs and have put 30 of it back on over the last couple years. I'm heading in the right direction again though.

Julia- you can still use the url from facebook. You just have to click "view image" before "view image info" then get the url. I was just checking to see if it worked.

So, I got my first outdoor ride of the year in today!  It was great.  I thought it was a bit windy, but while riding away from town, it didn't seem so bad.  Then when I turned around, BAM!  Total headwind.  I need to pay more attention to tail winds so that I actually appreciate them.  On the plus side, the way back has more downhill, so it lessened the blow of the headwind.

It is ALWAYS windy around here, so I may as well get used to it.

I HATE headwinds, they just suck the strength out of you!

Here's our Aussie superstar, Kylie Minogue tackling a tough one:

That is stupid high. I ran tonight with a guy who works for "tri rock". The tri side of the rock n' roll series. He said they are trying to target beginners for their races because that is where the sport is growing..... When I asked him how charging $140 for entry is good for beginners who aren't real sure about racing he was a bit surprised. I think if the fee's were that much vs $70 it would seem intimidating. Like this is a "more advanced" race. It was pretty comical to watch him squirm.

I did my 10k run before work this morning, beautiful morning, the air is getting nice and cool and fresh at that time now.

I'm doing the Don Fink marathon plan and these runs are meant to be zone 2 HR runs. My Garmin HRM has been going crazy at the start of a run which is annoying since I'm trying to stick to a particular HR so I need it to be telling me the truth.

This morning it said my HR was 200 as I started my run then dropped to 177 when I stopped and tightened the strap before dropping to 132 as I got a bit sweaty. Do you think it needs me to be a bit warm and sweaty before it picks up my HR reliably?

Talking of warm and sweaty, all the women on the MG liked Kevin's HM pic didn't they???

That happens me to me often at the beginning of a run.  It's interference of some sort.  I used to stop and diddle around with my strap, now I ignore it.

While someone is lazing in Hawaii, others are thinking about RACING!!!!  I know of at least two people toeing the line this weekend.  Are there others?  Raise your hands high and tell us about your strategy!!!

The HR strap does read more accurately with some water between you and the strap to transfer the signal.  Put a little water on the strap as you put it on and you should be good.
Also helps if your not super hairy;  I have to stay diligent on the man-scaping or I'll get crazy readings.

However, while on this topic of HR at the start of runs...  Does anyone else observe a spike in HR at the beginning, first 1/2 mile, of a run/bike?
This happens to me as well and I figure it's from not really warming up.  I just walk out the front door and start running.   Like David, my HR quickly shoots up and then settles back down as I press on.   I have had success to avoid this by starting at about 1:30 slower pace for the first mile and building back up to speed from there as I warm up.

YES!  I have another half marathon this weekend, The Dismal Swamp Stomp...  Strategy -- RUN!
It's a super flat, out and back, straight line course so there won't be any distractions and I can stay consistent.

Racing Carl Dolan Circuit Race in Maryland this weekend.

Doing my first masters race, 35+ open, which means there will be Cat 3 (fast), Cat 2 (really fast) Cat 1 (Insanely fast) and Cat 4 (me and I'm slow).

In my best Clubber Lang voice, my prediction for this race is "pain..."

I am also doing a half marathon this weekend, RaceFest.  I just plan on taking it nice and easy and not really trying for any goal time or anything.
