Jim - I did the research and I can totally set this up in my pain cave - but it looks just awful. I'm a glutton for punishment and will have to get on this one soon. The guy on the couch cracks me up as does the donut references throughout.

I thought about it, but I is impractical for me. My trainer is in the basement and I don't see it being invited up anytime soon. The treadmill upstairs. I get enough grief from the teenaged girls in my house, because of my tri shorts, I could only imagine the response I would get sweating and running up and down the stairs with them on.
I love the verbal abuse in The wretched. I really don't want a donut after, I have no idea what eggo is perhaps one of our international members can give us a hand with that one.

I also did a sufferfest last night. Forget which one it was but only lasted 30mins all in the TT positions. Was very good as I wanted a fast ride to get the legs moving before Saturday.

Jim, the Eggo intrigued me and I asked uncle Google. Apparently it's just a waffle.

That's disappointing. I know eggo waffles. I was hoping it was some sort exotic food like vegemite or something familiar the way the British call cookies biscuits.

Hi all...

I have been MIA. Have been quasi-training, but with my first race 10 days from now (South Beach Tri), I have been more consistent lately. Still my running fitness is well behind where I want it to be, but will have to do. Having said that, I had my best run in a while this morning  (per Maffetone). Was able to keep my HR down while going faster, so its the first positive running sign I had in a while, after countless frustrating (i.e. high HR) tries. I just change the batteries of my Garmin HR last night after it stopped reading, and I am now wondering if my HR readings were off (high) due to a low battery?

So to atone for my lack of participation on this forum, here are links to 2 articles that I found very informative (especially the first one).

Clinical study measuring the effect of swimming effort on overall triathlon time:

http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/39/12/960

Article on rotating running shoes as a way to avoid injuries

http://www.runnersworld.com/injury-prevention-recovery/study-backs-rotating-shoes-to-lower-injury-risk

BTW, key learning from this week: do not start a upper body strength program the day before a schedule swim. Very difficult to swim if you cannot move your arms :-)

I have been going to a computrainer bike studio twice a week. Lately, I have participated in their brick workouts. They are structure similar to this: bike 2 miles, run 1/2 mile...rinse and repeat. All at race pace/effort. Tough workout, but feels good once you are done. I have also been doing sufferfest videos with them, last Thursday was one call "a very dark place".  Funny how both the word Sufferfest and the name of the videos fit the workouts very well.

I tried to get a swim today after 2 weeks w/o swimming and there was an accident which made access to the gym impossible.  Add to this that I still can't run and I'm feeling like the world is conspiring against me being able to do the upcoming Iron Distance Challenge USA tri in June, very frustrating

I'm another fan of parkruns, did 20 something by now, it's addicting even without that red t-shirt. Btw, some people I run with have those black ones already (100 runs).

Short run in the rain today. Started with a drizzle, in the end it was pouring. Seems like we entered a long rainy season now. Sure we need some rain, but can we have some normal weather too, please!

Hi Gabe,

I've been reading about your ITB problems. Have you been foam rolling it? I appreciate you've probably got more than just a bit of tightness going on, but I have always found that regular (daily, or multiple times a day) foam rolling can make a huge difference to things like that. I'm sorry you're struggling with your race coming up. I was looking forward to hearing how you compared the Challenge family to Ironman. My planned race for this year was going to be a challenge event, but obviously all of that is on hold indefinitely ;-)

Our race director is a parkrun ambassador, and one of the the things he does is write some of the sidebars for the weekly email. In last week's email he was commenting that despite his wife doing some kind of volunteer role almost every week, she has now got her 100 shirt, before him. So he's making it his goal to run more often so that he can catch up with her ;-) Alister has been involved in turning parkrun into a very local thing in our region. When he set up our run there were 3 others within a 50 mile radius. There are now around 30, and he's had a hand in getting all of them off the ground. It's incredibly popular, and obviously fills a need. One of my friends runs at one of the original 3, and apparently when the others were starting they were concerned that they would lose a lot of their runners. However they've found that they just kept on growing, and some weeks can have up to 500 runners in that one event!

Doesn't feel like a shin splint, just a tight shin muscle to where I feel like I'm just slapping my right foot down and it just gets worse the longer I go. I did order a pair of clipless pedals to put on my bike and they should be here soon. I'm just hoping my shin issue goes away b/c right now I can't run much more than a half mile before it tightens up. Putting a damper on my run training.

It's possible that your cycling is affecting your shin, but it's much more likely that it's your running. When I first started tri training I got really tight shins from trying to run too fast and build up distance too fast. Lots and lots of calf stretches sorted it out. I would run really gently for a few minutes then stretch before getting going, and then thoroughly stretch out afterwards. If you have a foam roller that's also really good because you can roll all the way round the calf muscle, including the front where a lot of the tightness will be.

If you're having problems with your shin be careful when you get your clipless pedals and practice getting a good circular pedal stroke with both feet (trainer is good for that - you can unclip one foot and do them one at a time). The muscles you use will be a little different until you get used to it, so build up slowly. You will see an improvement once you've got used to them.

Thanks Jim and Rachel for the feedback. I suppose it is possible that I increased my rides a bit quicker than needed. We had 2-3 days of 60+ degrees so I felt the need to get out there! I'm a little nervous about the clipless pedals but ready to try them (as soon as I find some bike shoes!). I did do a little running on the treadmill this week and my shin didn't feel too bad. I'll gradually work my way back into it and add a longer warm up and some stretching, before and after. Thanks again!

@sjswan13 - I didn't see in the discussion anything about your bike setup. Have you been properly fitted for your bike based on your pedal and shoes? Incorrect body position often accounts for pain/discomfort. A good fitting and pedal stroke analysis may help you diagnose the problem.

We had a little Facebook discussion about this not long ago and the consensus seems to be the combination of risk of litigation along with the lack of profit to be made from it. However, I am reliably informed that there are at least 4 races up and running in the US, and I think the expectation is that like many other countries it will gradually take hold and spread.

My experience after both kids was that I felt good but s-l-o-w. My usual comfortable running pace is a 10-11 minute pace, and I think my first runs back were at a 12-14 minute pace. I'd taken both pregnancies off due to a number of complications (among them, it's hard to have any energy for running if you throw up multiple times a day for 9 months straight so my main goal became getting through the day alive and hydrated), but when I started back in, it wasn't hard and probably only took a month or so before my pace was more or less back to normal. Building up mileage took longer, but between the sleep-deprivation and other demands of a baby, that's probably good

I'm due early September, and yes it's my first. First trimester was tough, but I'm feeling much better now. Wogging probably describes what I'm doing at the moment quite well. It's frustrating after spending the last 3 years finally getting fitter, but at least now I know it's in there somewhere and will come back eventually.

Hi Joe, no I haven't had a formal bike fitting or stroke analysis. The bike came with regular pedals but I really want to try the clipless ones to get the most of my pedal stroke. I think I am going to swing by a bike shop this weekend and seek out some help. Thanks!
