Only 5 weesk to the HIM

Holy Crap.  It is only 5 weeks for me too!

Ok, I have a question for the group, might be silly, but here goes.  I finished up my last workout of the day at 11am.  Tomorrow is a rest day and my race isn't until 7am on Sunday.  That is way more than a rest day...right?  I mean it is like 1.8 rest days almost two, right?

About the knee,  it is at the attachment quad to the patella? is it painful to walk?  Don't want to make a big issue of it, but knee tweaks also scare me a little.  Those tendons/muscles provide so much stability and hurting one can cause all sorts of upper and lower body issues if not healed properly.

Thanks for the knee link.  Seems to be the right diagnosis - doesn't make me feel real good about tomorrow.  Tonight I'm going to get out and ride and jog a little to see how it feels.  Then tomorrow I'll just have to see how it goes.  Damn church league softball!!!

This is probably my last post for a while.  Race tomorrow and then off to Chicago.  The Iowa Cubs (AAA team) play at Wrigley on Sunday and kids get to run the bases after the game.  How many chances in your life do you get to run the bases at Wrigley?
Everyone have a great weekend!

swbkrun - 2009-08-07 10:25 AM Chris I agree with everyone for the most part.... However, if your bike is your weak spot, then tackle it.  If you look at my training logs over the last couple months you will see that I have almost forgot about the swimming aspect.  This is due to the fact that I am "OK" there.  I want to develop my biking muscles so I have spent more time in the saddle doing both long(er) rides, and hill repeats (most of our races are hilly).  There is a HUGE difference in pacing, nutrition, and the mental game when it comes to a 1/2 Ironman.  I would be sure to focus on distance not speed right now.  Like everyone said speed comes with time.  After doing several 1/2's and a couple full Ironman's I can go out and push my pace because I know what to expect both from my body and mind.  Don't rush into these things, and don't get discouraged.  Continue to get your workouts in, and learn from both the good and BAD!  It will all come together on race day AS LONG AS YOU ARE SMART AND PATIENT!!!

Barry--- Weird about the shoes.  In my opinion a GOOD SHOE, shouldn't need to be BROKEN IN..... You should be good to go from your 1st run.  I would maybe thing about another pair of shoes, or orthodics if the problem persist!?

This makes a lot of sense to me.   My only thought would be with 6 weeks to go you might be able to make some gains, but the off season would be the best place to tackle it.  Since I am a reasonable runner, I have really dialed it back in favor of swimming and biking.  It comes with a cost though,  I am a slower runner, but presumably a better triathlete.  I can live with that for now.

I aslo agree with Steve on the nutrition. You can squeak by with poor execution in a Sprint and maybe an Oly, but no way no how in a HIM or longer.  It is a top priority for me (see my short term goals) from her until September.  I'm better, but definitely do NOT have it nailed.  I don't want to be a shuffler in my race.

All of the people in my swim class were trying to get me to spit out a time goal for this weekend and the HIM.  I refuse to think about it.  Given this is my first real year, I am all about learning and good execution.  It makes my life a lot easier!

PS John your compliment is greatly appreciated, but highly exaggerated!

John speaks the truth......One word we Canucks use for girls like you are "rockets"

Plainsman AU - 2009-08-07 10:08 AM

I think I had one of those BREAKTHRU workouts last night.   I got in from a trip a little tired, but wanted to get my key workout in for the week.  Rode the bike to the pool to do a 30 min 1500 m swim, hour on the bike...19m, and then home to run.  Was planning on a 6 mile run, and felt awsome starting off.  My legs felt great on the bike and starting the run, I thought I was going to be able to have a great run, but about mile 2 I started to develop a bad blister on the inside of my arch from my new shoes so I cut it short to 3 miles.

Why does this happen?  Same thing happened when i bought the last pair (Brooks).  I am having to get stability shoes, and I am wondering if the "post" on the inside is what is causing it.  The blister comes up toward the front inside of the arch.  Last night it felt like a knife on the way home.  Maybe I am just a wuss.

make sure you post an image of it in your log.  and talk to the folks at your running shop about trying something else.

BigReub - 2009-08-07 10:13 AM Karen, I'm sure there's some good dirt track racing around here this weekend - come on over and do the Columbus tri again and head to the races saturday night.  Ignore that - I just checked the local schedules.

Chris, nice run.  Very impressive after a long work day.

Suzy, IMO, you being the little energizer bunny you are, if you can knock out 3k another 1200 shouldn't be a problem.

I've got a little problem...I hurt my knee (actually the bottom of the quad) last night in my softball game sliding into home (stupid slide rule).  So today is all about getting that quad going for tomorrow.  I planned a short, easy ride for after the game, but the quad was hurting too much then for a ride.

Reuben... What are you doing sliding into home?? Your an 8 foot monster- take out the catcher!!! We play to run behind home plate to avoid the collisions, which of course means you don't slide either.

Have a great day tomorrow man! Enjoy it!

Thanks to everyone for the advice, personal experiences, etc.  I certainly do appreciate it.  Here is my thing - I thought about skipping the swim for additional time in the saddle b/c I really feel confident in the water.  (In my olympic I did 1500 in 27).  For my HIM, I am hoping to get in around 30.  No issues there.  I may have mispoken about faster / stronger on the bike.  I want to be able to maintain my speed throughout the entire event more than anything and to feel strong going into the run instead of fatigued.  My goal for all three is:

Swim 30m
Bike: 3 hrs
Run:  2 hrs - doubt that will happen (it will probably be more like 2:10)

Main Goal:  Under 6 hours

I don't know if that makes more sense.  I am trying to be patient with my training.  That's not real easy for me.  I am either going wide open or stopped.

All of those look doable... Don't focus on TIME.... Just focus on what you have trained for.

Also I might be wrong here, but a 1/2 Iron swim is 2200 yards... To swim under 30 minutes when you were swimming a 1500 in 27 minutes?  You would be taking Phelps spot on the US team doing 600 yards in 3 mins.  I tell you this because I don't want you to come out of the water in 35 minutes and think that you are WAY BEHIND your goal already.  I swim an Oly in around 25 minutes... and 1/2 Iron's in 35 minutes...

Let's see if we can relate to Golf.... You are 100 yards out and you take your Driver and try and get to the green..... TOO MUCH CLUB.  You over did it.... No your shot coming back to the green is going to be a tough one over tree's.  You got yourself in deeper crap just because you picked the wrong club. Don't over do it.  Pick the right club... Meaning the right gears on the bike.

I hope this helps you... (all of you for that matter)  Don't be upset... I am trying to "Keep it REAL"

Barry

Here is how I mounted mine (well, I didn't mount it, my bike buddy did!)

Chris--Your clarifications help.  You certainly do have a great swim going on.  I still think that just monitoring your zones on the bike will give you the best shot of a stronger run.  I am sure you will do great!

Had my 90 minute massage so the only thing left is to get my gear together, carb load and hydrate throughout the day and have fun on Sunday in the sweltering 90F+ weather.  Can't wait! Good luck everybody.

Sorry, that 1500 was in meters and I thought that an HIM swim equates to just over a 1930 m swim.  Swimming is by far my strongest event (and the only one I have a strong background in).  Obviously I don't know that my olympic measured exactly 1500 meters.  That was just how it was advertised.  During that race, I took it real easy and just focused on a long stroke instead of arm turnover and had a pretty strong sprint to the dock.

I like the golf analogy!  -and get your point.  That's why I want to become a stronger rider.  I am sure I am just getting way ahead of myself in terms of time doing tri's.  (I haven't even been on a road bike for a year yet.)  I want to be able to use the same effort but be able to hold a good pace longer.  That's why I was thinking hills - to use less effort, but get the same results.  Pacing in one thing I need to work on.

I appreciate the honesty.

Hey Steve

I totally understood your point until you started babbling about golf, huh? Tongue out

Plainsman AU - 2009-08-07 4:22 PM One of you guys a while back showed a pic where you had mounted your garmin to your aeros.  Tony or Traci maybe?  If you got that pic, I would like to see it again.  Gotta get mine off my wrist and on the bike.

Thanks Suzy.  A 90 minute massage?  NICE  Good luck on the race this weekend.

BigReub - 2009-08-07 12:13 PM Karen, I'm sure there's some good dirt track racing around here this weekend - come on over and do the Columbus tri again and head to the races saturday night.

I so wish we could come over for the race!!  It's not something that would normally be out of the question for us!!  We saw the Iowa Cubs in Des Moines when we went to Knoxville for the Nationals (like I said, we'll go anywhere for a good race!).  I am sure they will be great to see at Wrigley!!  Next month we are going to Silver Dollar Speedway to see the World of Outlaws.  Where is that you ask?  Yeah, it's in California!  Like I said, anywhere for a good race!!!

As I said it would not NORMALLY be out of the question, but I am afraid it is this weekend.  That is because the last day has sucked!!  Actually, I ended up in the emergency room last night.  How can everything go wrong at once??  I had a kidney stone (which passed), a UTI from the stone, and I have gall stones!!!  Surprised  My gall bladder is not infected or inflamed or anything, so they are not going to do anything about the stones now.  I am still in some pain, but not nearly as bad as yesterday!!  Of course, I did come home with some vicodin and something for nausea.  Not exactly the way I wanted a day off work today!  I didn't even go to the track tonight.

Good luck at the race, take it easy on your knee!

Thanks for the tips on the belts everyone.  I will pick one and send the link to my MIL.  Maybe the Fuelbelt Helium becaue it comes in pinkKiss

Suzy - thanks for the other suggestions.  You do have great ideas!  The In Laws got me the Profile Design AquaCell for Christmas and I really like it.  I so wish I could find a swim coach, because I would take that wouldn't want anything else!  How do you find a swim coach?? I could use a new pair of goggles, I think I will tell her that too!  Any other ideas?

Good luck to every one racing!

Karen
