I'm really seriously thinking of doing it. Its a tougher race than the 1/2 i just did. Don't want it to be a let down race though. Really i want to race it, 'cause I want to ge the bike jersey, but i can't buy a jerswey unless i compete in the race. And next year, it will be to close to Canada, so I can't do it next year. I think I have to do it this year. $300 late registration though. ouch the front page of the site says enter code IMPACT2010 for 25 buck off. says for first 200 but also says limited space left. so maybe it'll work. do it. is michelle gonna be around that weekend? maybe i'll come "spectate". Did you get your chain issue fixed? |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jvanis - 2010-07-07 8:56 AM So I am curious what everyone considers good/fast/slow etc run times. My observation thus far is everyone seems to think their run is slow. Outside of a general classification of Fast: Anyone faster than me Average: Everything else? I cannot put my finger on a number persay that I would call fast, but I do fall into the above trap where I say I am not a fast runner. Careful what you say here... A few post back you said that you are planning on running a sub 7:00 minute mile for your race this weekend. By saying that, and saying the statement above you are politely hinting that we all suck at running. It would be a dream for some to run a sub 10:00 minute pace and to them that is fast, and great. Please don't say stuff like this and make people not want to post there accomplishments. ITS ALL RELATIVE! I do wish you the best of luck this weekend however.... |

Second by no means am I hinting anyone sucks at running. This is why I hesitated posting the question. I guess it goes for all disciplines. I have been in the 11 minute+ miles not long ago and remembered thinking, man to be able to do sub 10s etc etc. I guess with that comment I was trying to say, I continually look to improve based on my current times. If I looked at my run times a year ago that I run now, I would have said I am a fast runner. Keep moving forward and working towards something I guess. I would never put anyone down for getting out there and doing something! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() dalessit - 2010-07-07 3:44 PM Just got my new shoes in the mail. My first try at minimalist running shoes. These things are super light. BTW that is a painting kids made for us to welcome us back home after LS. ![]() Oh and Kim, the Dr. didn't scold me for wearing 6 month old contacts.. (that are monthly change ones) but he did know they were pretty old. Yum! I am going to try a pair of these soon to see how they fit my foot. I like Brooks, but these appeal to me a bit more than the Green Silences. I need a good low cut shoe for longer distances when I wont wear my VFFs or Zoots yet. Let us know what you think of them! |

Please don't say stuff like this and make people not want to post there accomplishments. ITS ALL RELATIVE! I do wish you the best of luck this weekend however.... It so is!!! Yeah, I'm a faster runner than much of the world. And many women my age are much faster than I am. So it goes. Do I think I'm a fast swimmer? Well... compared to how fast I USED to be? And how fast I see the top racers swimming? No, I don't. Fast cyclist? No way, but I don't give up. Fast runner? I do decent IMO in my AG -- I rank much better than I do with my cycling. Put it all together and I can hold my own but I always want to do better... for ME. It's all about me, seeing what I can do with the body I have and the life situation I have and the effort I choose to put in and the hunger I have when I race and and and and... Love Kim's attitude about not taking the easy way out because you know your competitors aren't. I'm like that as well, although much for me. When I'm out on a course, I don't want to think about all the workouts I missed that may be affecting my performance. I want to KNOW I did the absolute best training I could do and have that to fall back on mentally. Oh, and no, not racing this weekend. ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi gang just checking in. I haven't had time to catch up on all the threads here. The last few days have been so hot up here I haven't done much training. The temp has been over 100 F and we just don't get that kind of weather here often. Our pool was 90 degrees so it was like swimming in a big bath tub. At least it has given my shoulder time to heal. It's feeling much better these days. I'm looking forward to lower temperatures moving in on the weekend so I can get some more training time in. Good luck to every one racing this weekend. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kt65 - 2010-07-07 12:48 PM To chime in on the "fast" discussion, I pretty much try to only concern myself with my own progress. This year was my first year of being a coached athlete, and I have learned that it is self defeating for me to look at someone else's times, when I can only control my effort and speed by following the plan. You never know who will show up on race day. This can work both ways, in that maybe you place really high in your AG but you know you could have gone harder. Or worse, you gave it 120% and you finished way down the ladder cuz some super fasties (like Julia) showed up.  I just think it's not good mentally to judge myself based on AG ranking. That's what works for me. I do, however, use my competitors as motivation to train harder even when all I want to do is hit the snooze and hide under the covers! I know that they are out there running in the rain, or heading out for a 4 hour ride in the hot sun, or getting up for Master's swimming at 5:00AM, and I don't want to be left in the dust on race day!!! I consider myself a pretty good biker and runner (we'll leave swimming aside...), but when I see a runner runner, guys who do a 32 minute 10k, that's super impressive to me. I often tell myself "Self, wouldn't it be cool to be able to run like that..." or when I see a top local Cat 1 or 2 cyclist, I know I can't keep up with them. Heck, doing an OWS with Kyla was awe inspiring. It's definitely all relative. I race to see how I can do against myself... I think that's ultimately all we can do. As Kim points out, you never know who's going to show up at the starting line. But like Kim, I also use my competitors as motivation. My screen saver at my office says "Are you training today? The guy who's going to beat you is..." Sometimes I need that little reminder. However, in the end, I think that the racing is only part of the journey. The dedication and focus, the hours of training, the enjoyment any of us derive from doing something that we couldn't do a week, a month, a year ago... that's a gift to ourselves. Running a sub 10 minute mile, holding 24 mph for a Oly bike leg, swimming 100 yards nonstop, going sub x:xx at whatever distance... these are milestones to be sure, but a goal attained simply means climbing the next rung on the ladder. There is no perfection to be found. So where does that leave us? It means that, come race day, we try to maximize our potential at any given point in our development as athletes. Trevor rocked his HIM and shaved 30+ (!) minutes off his previous effort. That's amazing. I'd dare say he raced to the limit of his abilities. But does he have a 1:50 run split in him someday soon? I'd bet on it. We continually try to expand our potential by evolving our mental and physical abilities, and hope that our execution fulfills it. To me, that's successful racing. And that's why I like this group: we push eachother to evolve. DJ completing her first tri, Mark gearing up to do his first, Dino reading his biofeedback and make the difficult decision that recovery = progress, Tony steadily bringing down his run splits, Suzy working out nutrition, Kim wrangling her swim into submission (you and me both!), John signing up for the Full Meal Deal in Texas next year, Tracy and Trevor signing up for IMC next month, Kyla and Linda getting it done at IMCdA... it's a long list of really bad a$$ accomplishments and evolutions. So, to return to the original question: what's a fast run time? I think it's the one who maximizes their potential at that particular point in time. As Trevor said: we're all the hare to someone, and we're all the turtle to someone else. |

I felt like I ate too much and was feeling bad for not running or exercising. So at 9 pm I changed clothes and headed outside. It was still 86 degrees but the sun wasnt beating down on me. I took off at my normal slow slow pace and just ran. Up to this point I have never made it past 1 mile without stopping and having my shin muscles be super sore and wore out. WelL I had a breakthrough and made it 1.76 miles in 23 minutes. I first broke my record with distance and also time, 2 weeks ago in 23 minutes I only made it about 1.23 miles so I am getting better. |
