"For those of us that don't happen to have one yet what are the grades for the hills at CDA?"

I've posted a plot of the elevation and grade vs. distance here:

https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B1tt9NTzW7KnNTI0Y2M1YzMtZGY1NC00MzM...

It looks like the grade tops out on the climb between miles 25 and 27, with a couple of really steep short sections right around 25 while heading north away from Hayden Lake.

It's funny; I watch the video and try to find places around here in Colorado Springs that I think are harder to ride so I can train on.  My wife thinks I've lost it especially when I have my laptop with Google maps up and a local area map laid out in front of me trying to war game the local routes and hills best for training.

Yeah I think you're not the only one who has "lost it". On the computrainer it shows the grade. I then go outside with my ergomo computer on my bike that has grade and find hills that have the same grade to guage what CDA will look like.

I Have to get one of those!!

Wow, how far I have fallen. Did my first LT run workout in a few years today. My LT pace was slower than my former marathon pace. Glad we have 8 months left, gonna need everyday of it to get to where I want.

Had my first good swim workout in over a decade, and I'm pretty stoked about it. Looking forward to getting back where I was in high school.

So leave it to me to let triathlon dictate our vacation schedule, but I'm thinking of taking two weeks off from work this fall or winter.  Possibilities include over Thanksgiving, or in early to mid-January.  Would the latter end up interfering with training too much?  It's my first IM, but I'm coming from a distance-running background, and will be running the Portland Marathon in a week and a half.  I'm hoping to take some time off from serious training for the rest of October, then gun it up again in November.

If I took that approach, how harmful would it be to take half of January off from training completely?  I haven't decided on a specific training plan yet, but I'm guessing something along the lines of 20-30 weeks, which the vacation would happen with 25ish weeks to go.

Thoughts?

Wow, so I'm guessing the grade given on the Mapmyride.com site is not accurate?  I got really scared when I first saw your chart because that website listed the STEEP hill from my HIM as 4%.  Imagine my panic when I saw 15% plus on a few sections   I had to search for the CDA bike course just compare apples to apples.  Turns out that site has the steepest CDA grade at 3%!

X2...as a CDA finisher, i can say i WISH the hills there were 3%. Theres some steep stuff, but the scenery makes it all worth it.

There is a warning sign on the side of the road that says that the  hill on the first out and back section is 6%.  This hill isn't even in what people call the IMCDA hill section.

I rode that section again on my computrainer tonight. It has it at 3.6% for almost the full length of the hill going out and 3 on the way back down it.

Anyone else having trouble just maintaining and not jumping to 15 hr/wk right now?

I am starting to work on my run a little and increasing my long rides on the bike before winter comes.  Really looking forward to logging some major hours on the indoor trainer.

I am having trouble just getting in the gym! Seriously, after a long year, its nice to be lazy for a bit. But I better soak it in now, because it is back to the grind next week with run focus and masters swimming

I'm excited about my training but for now as soon as the Denver marathon is over I'm looking fwd to just taking it easy for a few weeks. It has been a long season and I need to do something else for a month.  Mid November will be my start to IMCDA training. However, I know what you are feeling because after my break I am sure I will be itching to go.  Thankfully, this year I have a coach who will keep me in line and on pace to finish IMCDA.

Don’t worry the long workouts THEY ARE A COMING!!!!  YEA HA!!

Happy training.
