mndymond - 2010-12-02 12:25 AM Well I hope I find the Lake Placid Spinverals less annoying! I normally have about 2 different distractors anyways even when watching a Spinverals...I get a little bit too ADD for one solid form of media on the trainer. I normally have the DVD playing with either music or TV/movie on my computer to watch on the side. Sometimes notes...depends on my mood.

We will see how it goes!

Hey Mndymond - Was wondering if you have watched the spinervals DVD yet? I am going to order it too and am wondering what I am in store for.

Also probably going to order the Raymond Britt book mentioned here as well.

Great work to everyone on your training so far!

Ryan

Hey Ryan. No I haven't watched it yet. It is still actually in the plastic, I just started riding again while on vacation...I will let you know as soon as I do though!

Started the New Year off with a rest day! Did a bike down the Haleakala volcano on Maui and some hiking, etc. Some pics are on my other blog (link below)!

Going back to Edmonton in a few days I know I can't complain, but I am trying to psych myself up for about 3-4 months on the trainer...Oh well, my plan is in place and I just have to follow it!

Hope everyone had a good New Year's!

Question for anyone who has volunteered for this (or any IM event) before....I volunteered for Aid station run 1 from 7:45-11:30....I was wondering if there is usually a pre-race meeting for volunteers....I'll need to figure out if I have to schedule a vacation day or not.

Rencor - I have no idea as I have never volunteered at am IM branded race, but I just wanted to say thank you, thank you, thank you for volunteering! especially since I am pretty sure I will not be at aid station 1 between 7:45am and 11:30am. Oh - wait, you mean in the evening? Then there is a good chance I  may have at least two opportunities to thank you in person....

Seriously - thanks!

We did have a brief meeting on Saturday to meet our captains, get our time slots, and pick up our tshirts.

Ryan - thanks for the reminder! If I can make it to Sunday, I will have hit every single workout schedule by my coach for the past three months, which has included  22 two-a-days and 12 rest days. This week my hamstrings and glutes are pretty sore, so I must be doing something right...?

About to jump on the trainer for an hour fifteen, then strength/plyometrics immediately after. planned to get it done earlier today, but my wife called and said she had an early afternoon meeting close to the house, so we grabbed lunch together instead. Now THAT is a nice surprise, and a good day all around!

I'm on my way back to Canada shortly. Did my last short run in Maui this morning just to enjoy the beach and then relaxed by the pool to get some last rays! I got some decent training in here with about 12hrs last week of SBR, which is the most I have done for a few months anyways. I'll probably be hitting 10-14 over the next few weeks if all goes well (mainly due to swimming--5-6hrs a week).

Great work everyone! 200 days! That seems so short!

Hope everyone's winter training is going well.

I've recently had a pretty major set back. Was skiing last week at Stratton Mt. in Vermont and took a hard fall on some moguls. Felt a pop in my right knee.

Saw the doctor today, he said its probably just a minor strain and should heal in a few weeks, but it still knocks me out of training for awhile.

I volunteered at a run station at LP last year. It was just like mrbbrad said. We had a short meeting a day before the race. I think the meeting was in the early afternoon but I'm sure that depends on your station captains. At the meeting you'll meet the captain, get your assigned time slots, and have any questions you have answered. We did not get our t-shirt at the meeting. I think they feared that people would take the t-shirt and then not show up to work the station. So we got our shirts when we showed up to work our shift.

Ouch, drdking - really, really tough luck. I guess if there is any silver lining it is that this is only the first week of January, and not the last week of March? We still have 199 days!

I was talking with some friends just yesterday about either taking a ski trip or a beach trip in February (that is what you do here in the south when it is not cold enough nor warm enough - just wet and dreary). Some of the folks were really excited about the possibility of of a ski trip, but in the back of my mind I kept thinking about IMLP and the chance for injury. The beach sounded awfully good to me.

I hope you can still get in the water and on the bike - keep us posted as to your progress, and good luck on mending quickly!

Does that mean it is springtime and I can ride my bike outside without looking like I'm about to go skiing?
I'm over the cold weather in New England.

I just got back from 2 weeks in Minnesota which makes NE weather look balmy. Many days high of the day was under 10 add in wind chill, snow/ice packed on most all roads and sidewalks...here in MA things are looking warm

Looking forward to 10 days at tri camp in March though.

How, if at all, is everyone incorporating strength training into their training? I don't think this has been discussed yet.

Kathy, somehow you going to a fun 10 day tricamp in March isn't making me feel better!!!

That is awesome though.  What a great way to launch into spring training period.  I will be working out at 5am before work everyday just like now so think of me when your out riding around in the daylight like a normal person

WittyCityGirl - 2010-12-31 3:00 PM Wishing you all a happy, healthy, injury free 2011!

I look forward to seeing fellow BTers at Lake Placid.  I am volunteering in the women's transition area.  I raced LP this year and volunteered the year before.  My husband, arrogant_bastard, will be out there with you all on race day.  We're staying at that hotel just above the oval (Northwoods??).

If you have any questions about following the BT plan feel free to send me a message. I used the free plan to train for IMLP and a friend paid for the intermediate plan.  Also, feel free to ask me about the swim.  I came from pretty strong swim background and was still shocked by the chaos in the water on race day.

My biggest bits of advice-don't underestimate how much cycling you should do for training and nail your nutrition plan before race day.  I thought it was a great idea to put a caffeinated gel in my special needs bag for the run and honestly, there is nothing "special" about a gel when you're that far into the race! (You've already been offered gels and numerous aid stations by that point).

I have a pretty detailed description of my race day, so feel free to check out my report.

Happy New Year!!!!

Hey Witty city girl! just wanted to say I love your race report... it was reading these BT reports (yours especially) that really sealed the deal for me that, "Yes! I am going to do the ironman"...Hope I get to meet you at IMLP, kate

I'm just fortunate I have understanding husband who works hard so I can be home with the kids. I do most all my training between 7:50 and 3 M-F when our kids are in school.

I'm hoping my pes anserine bursitis clears up with PT so I can get back to building up my run and have less knee pain and be able to be ready for tri camp.

My PT is a former division 1 runner who is 24 weeks pregnant and still runs 50 miles per week (less than her normal weekly mileage) at a slower pace than before.

drdking- Best of luck healing quickly. Lots of time to heal and still get your training in.

mndymond- Welcome back to the mainland! Now the rest of us can stop being jealous of you.

Rencor- My volunteer group didn't meet up the day before the race. The captain just had us show up at the appointed hour on race day and introduce ourselves.

TankBoy- So was that suspicious round package under your tree a bowling ball or a kettle ball?

@ Fred- Thanks so much for dropping in from time to time to discuss some great topics!

Dream Chaser- Isn't it a little too early for the classic DC Freakouts...

I have a question about coaching and coaches. I've been researching coaches, but really haven't come across anyone that I feel a perfect fit with. If you are using or have used a coach that you have had a great experience with please share. Is there any kind of rule on BT about name dropping or suggesting a coach?

On the Triathlon Talk board I posted a short video of me swimming; well, trying to anyway. I'd love any advice that you guys have on ways that I can improve. Seeing myself on video for the first time shows some glaring mistakes that I make.

RJ1979...you really know how to ask the right questions whether you know it or not. Actually, you toss out some very engaging questions. You see, how people incorporate (or not) strength training is like asking what are the best tires, the best gels or what is the best nutrition plan for you. You will get answers from all ends of the spectrum. Personally, I like to strength train a couple times of week from October - February. If time permits (it rarely does), I will continue through May, however, this eventually starts to cut in on my swim, bike and run training so it gets pinched. This works for me because I feel like I need to stay strong to prevent injuries. You will find others that say that you do not need to strength train at all, just focus on swimming, biking and running. Bottom line, this racing stuff is really specific for what works for any individual. You are a test group of one. What works for you might not work for me. I am following the 30 week beIRONfit plan and there is not a single strength training session in the plan. You will have to decide what is best for you!

If you can count shoveling snow as strength training, then we've done some.  Because of the snow and ice around here (western MI), most of our biking has been at spin classes at the Y.  Would anyone like to comment on how well spin classes do or do not prepare someone for an Ironman bike leg.  Also, knowing that I have to replace some poor swimming technique with better form, I have just ordered Total Immersion Swimming DVD for help in this area.  Has anyone worked with this method and if so, any opinion or advice?
