And...does anyone know of group rides that leave from Monona?  Everything seems to start at Fireman's and I need to get the in and out down too.  A little concerned about city traffic and missing a turn on my own.

IME, if you ride the loop and drive the stick you'll be fine on race day.  All the technical stuff and most of the real hills are on the loop.  The stick is relatively tame.

Rode two loops of the bike course from Fireman's in the big 53 chain ring.  Not by choice.  Thanks to a bad mechanic working on the front derailleur which wasn't broken in the first place.  Anyway, the climbs were hard but very doable. I got off and ran 7 so I wasn't toasted. Going to try a compact next time to compare.  I think there are enough places that are flat enough or exposed to wind the TT bike helps.  I did NOT do descents on the aero bars.  Felt good.

Thanks for the comments about the swim.  I have never been in that big of a mass start but I usually start to the right and a few rows back, take the first buoy wide and it works out.  Sounds like a similar strategy might work.

Can someone tell me when they have the weekend when you can do the swim course?

I thought the motorists were really respectful Saturday.

I don’t know if there are any group rides that leave from the terrace. A lot of people do the weekend of the OWS. Riding down John Nolan would not be recommended though. If you do leave from the terrace, I would stick to the bike path until the Sheraton then ride Rimrock out.

I'm signed up for the MOWS too and I'll be there riding the course.  I missed the stick this weekend so I'll be wanting to hit it up that weekend.  I got to ride the course for the first time this past weekend, did 2 loops.  It was my longest ride to date.  The hills are tough but doable.  It feels great to have seen the course now.

My training is going alright.  I've been doing a decent job of getting the long stuff in on the weekends, but my maintaining WOs during the week have been few and far between lately.  Now that I'll be off the road for a while, I hope to see that start to trend the other way.  I hope everyone else's training is going well!

Thanks for this.  Good info.  John Nolen did seem too busy for me to ride as a newcomer.  I'll come up for the swim...then ride the course.  Also coming up with Vision Quest 7/23 but they are meeting at Fireman's park too.

VQ puts on a decent ride... Just make sure you follow the actual course.  The last ride that VQ had they marked the streets and cut out about a mile and a half of the actual bike course.

Going out or on the loops?  The loop is pretty well marked.  I have the real video of the course and that experience really helped too.  Everything looked familiar - except for the reality of the descents. They are FUN!!

Most of the group rides, take a straight shot through Verona instead of following the actual loop around verona and by the BP again. Cuts out a couple of miles.

My training is going well. All aches are behind me for now. A big cycling week starts on the 1st.

I like to park in the gravel lot portion of the BP Gas station in Verona on Whalen Rd. Its next to Grey'd Tied House (for map reference) which is good for post ride beers and food. They don't mind you parking there and they have cheap water and g-aid. The gas station is about 50 yards from the turnoff back to Madison or loop 2 during the race.

The city of Verona is getting annoyed with people parking at Firemans park, so I would avoid that spot.

Let me know when you'll be there....IMOO course turns into my second home during the summer.

Really? Verona is getting annoyed with this? We are going to do it this weekend... I'll let you know what they say... if anything. That sounds crazy. I don't know if I know which gas station you are referring to...?

Fred: Let us know when exactly you're coming out... and while I probably can't hang with you for more than 15 minutes or so, maybe we can come up for a couple of loops. I know the course like the back of my hand, so I don't mind riding alone. Chris should be able to hang with you, though.... I will farm him out as company. Smile

I don't have first hand knowledge, but people rent/reserve the park on the weekends and show up for their event and the lot is full but nobody is around! I think mainly its a problem when the large groups show up from Chicago and surrounding areas.

There is a post and invitation from a coaching company in the Wisconsin forum letting people park and shower at their facility. Its in the wisconsin forum, not sure which thread.

The BP is on the real loop, at the very beginning on Whalen. If you google Grey's tied house, its pretty much next door.

Topic hop back to the swim stuff...has anyone deliberately started in the back?  I'm getting more confident with my OWS but I still have a lot of anxiety about the group mash-up at the start.  I'm very slow and I wonder if I should just play it safe and start wide at the very back of the pack?  Thoughts?

I'm a MOP swimmer. Due to my poor planning, the gun went off as I took my first step in the water last year. So, yeah, I started very wide at the very back of the pack. ;-) I swam a line from the entry point to the first corner and it was body-to-body the whole way. I don't remember getting much space until the the fourth (short) leg of the first loop.

It seems like the only way to avoid congestion is to start in front and finish in the top 100 or start in back and finish in the bottom 100 - or swim an extra 100-200 yards by staying very wide for at least the first loop. If you do the latter, you run the risk of missing the benefit of the current created by the swimmers. I don't know if this current is real or perceived, but based on my time I'm guessing there was something real happening.

Bottom line: start approximately in the pack where you think you should finish, hope for the best, expect the worst.

Fred Doucette - 2011-06-28 6:47 AM Thanks guys. Would love to do some riding in August with BTers. I'm finalizing plans and will get back. Not knowing the swim situation at IMWI but having swum at imlp before, I sod recommend not starting near the front unless you are in the 60 min range. Starting wide and waiting a few seconds works well. I've been pummelled pretty bad at IMs before myself.

Fred I am not sure what your schedule allows, but every year about 3 weeks ot from IMOO Masters puts on an OWS on the swim course and many people use this as their last big training day. This year falls on the 20th I believe so if you want to get a full swim in as well keep that in mind. Let us know when you plan on coming and maybe post in the Wisconsin forum, as summer picks up BT'ers in the area ride the course alot together, and you can usually find many others riding the course every day as well. Endurance Nation is doing a free clinic at the end of July on the course and local pro Blake Becker does one the week after, but he has a high price tag attached to his.

Just curious if anybody is using the IM Silver Beginner Plan. . .
I've been following it pretty closely, but am starting to wonder if its heavy on tempo/strength workouts and little less on duration.
Swim workouts seem to be about right, but runs and ride times might be a little light on time? As of this week, my longest ride will be 4:45 and run will 2:20. Any thoughts?

I know this is a little ways off, but is there an organized bike ride on Aug. 6th??  I was thinking that there was.  I am planning on coming to town that weekend and would like to ride the entire course if anyone else is interested.

On the topic of topic changes... Do you guys know if the full bike course is open on Saturday the day before the race (Sep 10)?

As I mentioned earlier I'm volunteering this year and racing next year so I'd love to ride the bike loop on Saturday prior to the race.  I live in Omaha and it's a 7 hour drive for me so I doubt I'll have many chances next summer to come up and ride.

I'm not following that plan.... but it sounds pretty "on" to me... My longest ride has been about 5:20 and my longest run has been about 2:20 so far.

Trust your plan.

Hey Wisconsin Peeps!

I'm curious if any of you have ever done CDA and MOO? Can you compare the 2? Also how quickly does MOO fill up? Do I need to be onsite or can I snag a spot online?

Thanks!

Did anyone do the Endurance Nation IMOO training camp last year? I'm trying to decide if its worth being up there that many days in a row, or if I should just hit the July VQ SAG ride instead.

When is the Endurance Nation camp?  I was going to do the Carmichael training camp, but it cancelled.  I planned my trip to WI and it's not refundable (August 11-22nd).  The only other camp I can find where they preview the course (what I really want to do) during the time that I am there is a Training Bible camp....anyone familiar with that?

Sadly it's in July: http://imwisconsinrally.eventbrite.com/

I'm not aware of anything between those dates off hand.
