I ran yesterday night. It was 21 deg at 4:30pm and when I got home it was 18 deg and dark.Even though I am just base building I am starting to feel like a triathalete again; tired sore and hungry.

Just popping in to say "Hi".  I love all the knowledge/advice on this board.  How is everyone's training going?

I'm following Fink's Competitive plan.  I like the training so far.  I've been having trouble with my left foot (heel bursitis/plantar fasciitis) for some time now.....so, my running is a bit minimal for now.... Hopefully, that will change soon.

Well, keep all the great advice flowing!

Happy Training

Stacie - good luck with the foot - if you have to have a little nagging injury, now is the time. Stay on top of it. I assume cycling does not aggravate it, only running?

Yes, just running aggravates it right now.  Unfortunately, this has been going on for quite sometime.  I got it while training for IMFL ('10), and had to get a cortisone injection for IMLOU this past year as well.  Thought it had cleared up a bit, but it is a very stubborn injury.  I have been seeing a podiatrist & chiropractor for more than a year.  Lot's of icing, stretching, ART treatments, heat therapy, etc..(you name it, I've done it).  Fingers crossed that I can make it through this training season.  I'm taking it nice and slow right now!

27weeks!

who ran in sub zero temp yesterday?!

No running over the last three days, but I did ski this morning in -23 degrees at Okemo Mountain!

20 hours of skiing has to be worth something in the logbook...

If not, my 3K swim tomorrow at 5am will begin the real count again after this little break in training...then trainer in the pm...

Keep up the good work all!

Dale

I ran...but it was in the low 30s and sunny.  Not bad at all here in Northern Virginia.

It was -15C in Toronto yesterday. Luckily no wind. Glad my two running winter jacket held up.

Kinda happy It's frozen! Hoping for a wetsuit swim. How many times have they have a nonwetsuit swim? Kinda scared without my Batman costume.

-23 temp alone is a work out itself.

Same here in Atlanta. We had a 2.5 hour trail run. Brilliant sunshine, 28 degrees at the start, warmed to low 40's by the end. Perfect weather for a long run if you ask me. Please do feel free to remind me later this summer when it is 100 degrees and a billion percent humidity here.

I wish I lived somewhere south!  I dont even know what im doing up here, I mean I dont even ski or snowboard or snowball fight!

Question about cassettes

With the hilly course in lake placid which cassette would you guys prefer?

Sram 1050 11-26

or

Sram 1070 12-25

I know very little with those numbers.  I just need one thatll help me climb the longest hill without running out of gear.

Thanks!

Tdotnew2tri - what size crank are you running, standard or compact? Any idea what your average "all day" speed might be on 100 mile rolling course?

At the start of last years race, im pretty sure they said it was the 1st time it had ever been non-wetsuit legal. (but most people still wore them, just couldnt qualify for a kona slot if you did.)

53/39t standard is that what your looking for. I can only base it on my half ironman with some ride complications. I rode with the average of 24km/hr in muskoka half ironman. I think muskoka was a great definition for.rolling.

[/QUOTEIim not worried about kona spot, but isn't there a certain temp that wet suit is not allowed at all? Would you still get dq if you wore it?

Another question guys. I walked in to a bike store yesterday and tried to sell me helmets. Having already 2 they asked how old the helmets were. I said I don't know. They told me that helmets have expiration days of 5years. They said the foam inside my helmets no longer has that stability to protect my.head. Is this true? When I got home my aero helmet was manufactured in July 2007: which makes it 5 years this July. Does the ironman event check for helmet date and stuff. I don't wanna get dq for an expire helmet. Thanks! My day off today!!

Based on that info, I would strongly recommend switching to a compact crank and most likely a 12/27 cassette. If you have a stock SRAM rear derailleur I *think* a 27 may be a bout as large as you can go, but defer to the techs in the group who know better. I seem to remember somewhere last year Fred-who-wishes-he-had-signed-up-for-Lake-Placid-this-year-instead-of-Mt-Tremblant-and-that-is-why-he-is-lurking-in-the-group-D* posted up a really good analysis of gearing options for Lake Placid. His contention (I think?) was that if you are going to run 6+ hours a compact crank was the way to go. I have to agree based on my own 6 hour experience last year.

*and you know I am kidding Fred - really glad you are contributing to the group - it is really ME that wishes you were racing IMLP this year!

Another slightly cheaper option is change out you chain rings to a 52/38 run the same crank and get a 12-27 cassette. IMOdo this as soon as you can so you can train with this gearing.

btw Rusty’s option is another viable one.

Yes the material in helment breaks down in time.  Not really sure of the expiration date though.  If you ever drop a helmet you should also replace it.  Unseen cracks weaken the helmet severely.

I've been to races that have checked helmet integrity very well (SavageMan and others) Both Lake Placid Ironmans I've raced they did not check my helmet.
