I would rather be any of those.  My hockey team has referred to me as a bull and a charging rhino in previous games...

I was not saying that you could not swim, I was saying that Yanti is the resident expert on the subject just as you are the resident expert on running.   I'm sure that you knew that but I just wanted to clarify.

In my mind Salty = Running Goddess and Yanti = Mermaid

Jo Baxas = sloth...just so we're clear!  That's my dream animal!

Umm have you seen Kristin Bell freak out about the sloth? It has to be the cutest, weirdest and most endearing thing I have ever seen.

G'day Manatees,

Swam a few thousand yards last night, kicks and 1 arm drills.  I found out my pace per 100 yards with one arm is around 2:12 or so (SCY with a lowsey flip turn).  Pretty satisfied with that.  Went to spin class Monday also so my first two workouts since the crash, whohooo.

Thank you so much for your inspires and kind thoughts, even though I'm not a "Chatty Cathy" here they mean a lot to me.

It's been 2.5 weeks since my fall and I'm still tender on my right side so I don't see running in my near future.  Should I see a sports medicine doc.?  Nothing shows up in X-ray so it's just tissue damage etc. right?

So glad that you are able to get some workouts in.  I'm sure that you've been climbing the walls.  DO NOT POST YOUR INJURED SWIM TIME.  It only hurts my feelings!

It might not be bad to see a sports doc to see if you can get into physical therapy.  I mean, just having the right exercises and stretches to do to keep things mobile can be beneficial, I think.

Is PT stuff usually covered by insurance?  I mean, I'm sure I'll heal up eventually but man, it's going slower than I want.

My PT was, and I didn't even go to my regular doctor first to get a referral. I just went directly to the Ortho. He assessed my injury, and recommended the PT.

Great job with the swim. I know that probably seems horribly slow to you, but I think that's a great time, especially one armed.

^^^^ I agree whole heartedly.

The cramp/fin discussion has been interesting. I haven't yet tried fins, and my kick is sorely lacking. So a little knowledge certainly doesn't hurt. Thanks, I may have to give them a go, but I'll make sure I don't use them at the end of a workout. I should get into the water tonight, hopefully I will be swimming with my DW. It should be an enjoyable end to the work week.

I just wanted to show off a little of the local flavor here. I ran into this little guy on my way home yesterday on the bike. He was just sunning himself on the pavement. (Hopefully he shows up OK)

I turn to the animal experts for more info, but he was a baby gator, about 12 - 16 inches long. Pretty cool in that he just sat there as I got close enough to take his picture.

Happy Friday, Manatees! I'm looking forward to a long week Laughing The weather is supposed to be really nice here on Sat and Mon, Sun might be rainy.  Who do we have racing - I know someone is, can't remember!

Although I slept terribly last night, I got up at 5:45 for the strength training bootcamp (and logged it in the May Challenge - manatees are finidhing strong!).  Also had cycling intervals/hills last night, it was a good-hard workout.  I really like cycling with a group (especially when I can stay close enough to draft!).  I got some further recommendations to take my bike back to the LBS for tweaking to try to solve the pain in the butt problem.  I was told that if my saddle feels good when I ride, I should try to stick with it and fix the pain with small adjustments.  I do like that saddle!

Have a great weekend! And thank you to all our service men and women out there!! (Including my step-brother, Army Reserves!)

I don't think so, I did look around before I stopped. I think it is about the time of year for the nest to be cleared and the little ones to be sent packing. But my knowledge of gators is limited to golf courses and bike rides, so I take care when they are around.

Some injuries will only show up with MRI. That said, it's perfectly normal to still be tender, if not even in pain, in all sorts of places, so I'd give it time, and definitely take it easy in cycling classes if you're still sore.

That said, if you can get a referral to PT, absolutely do it (really try to get in with a sports PT if you can. There's a significant difference in quality between PTs just like any other health practitioner). If you can't, and can't afford paying out of pocket, I can probably recommend some things that may help and at least shouldn't hurt (used to tutor/TA PT students and have worked with PTs).

If the occasion ever occurs where some of us manatees can get together I propose a Double Down challenge.

A double down followed by a swim, followed by a double down, followed by a run

I propose that we meet in the Raleigh area.  We can choose between the Krispy Kreme Challenge and the Doughman, a quadrathalon (eat, bike, run, swim

I saw the Doughman on Man vs. Food, cuh-razy!!  But I'd totally try it.  We only go 'round once!

bcraht - 2012-05-24 11:17 AM Need some advice:  Yesterday, at the end of my swim workout, we were doing some all out 50's with fins.  On the last one, I had a calf cramp, bad enough that I had to stop, get the fin off, and float on my back (I was in the deep end).  I got to the edge of the pool and stretched it out.  I get calf cramps on a semi-regular basis.  I biked last night on the trainer, felt ok, but was sore when stretching last night.  This morning it is really sore, like I had to limp getting out of bed, and sore to walk and touch.  So my question: do I rest, or get my run in later to loosen it up?  Ice or heat?  I have had soreness the next day after a cramp, but not to this extent.  Thanks!!

Hummm, well, the "all out" is obviously an indicator that you did something that you don't always do. I can run every day but unless I go "all out" I don't experience any soreness.

I don't think ice/heat is EVER a bad plan so I would start there. I think you also have to figure out if this is soreness or more of a actual injury kind of pain. If you would categorize it more as soreness, I would run and see if it loosens up. Be very careful though, and if it feels worse I would bag it.

If you think it's more of an injury kind of pain (think sprain, tear etc.) I would definitely not do the workout.

*I'm sorry this isn't more specific but it's very dangerous for me to attempt to diagnose your pain level.

Ha, no need to apologize.  This is one of those posts where you hope someone will get out their crystal ball and tell you exactly what to do and what will happen.  I *feel* as though it is just post cramp soreness, but I *worry* that it may be an injury.  I've been icing, I'll see how it feels in a few hours.

Next question: who uses compression socks/sleeves, and do you find it helps avoid cramping?

I was kind of hoping a Swimming Manatee (aka Yanti or, as it turns out, Reece the Wounded Swimming Manatee) would reply first but...

For me this happens if I try to go fast and push off too hard from the wall.  I don't feel like I am pushing off the wall exceptionally hard or even differently than normal but I'm almost certain that is what is happening.  My calves get tight.  Solution = foam roller/The Stick and think "smooth" when I turn.

As an aside, I do am open turn in the pool.  YMMV.

Cramps are almost always from overfatiguing muscles beyond their training (which can include in ways they're not used to). You don't usually swim with fins and not often all-out, so there you go. I'd bet it returned on the bike because the muscle was still fatigued and tight from the swim stuff.

Ice can help, heat can help (unless it's a significant acute injury as it increases inflammation, but, though I really can't tell ya, that's not what it sounds like in this case). Foam rollie can help; stick can help; I do the pauper's version by using tennis balls or raw potatoes to roll knots out (ouch. ouch. ouch.) Self-trigger-point massage can help (use blunt finger/thumb. Dig deep and hard into the heart of the knot and keep pressure there. Most people don't have the stomach for this but it really works).

I use compression (but not for training) since I got great cheap 2XU ones in Melbourne. I felt they were very helpful wearing the days before the race because of all the walking, and days after for recovery. They're not going to help much with cramps because cramping is generally not a compression issue.

As for your run, feel free to try it but go out very, very easy at first and be prepared to bag it if the cramp returns or your calf feels worse.

When I've had a knot and I'd need to do a workout, I'd sometimes tie a big bandanna very tight around the calf (not like tourniquet tight, just firm), with a big fat double or pretzel knot right on the muscle knot.

Baby gator is so cute, thanks for posting it, Chris!

Reece: glad to hear you were able to swim even though you are injured.  As others said, don't go too hard and damage your still healing muscles and tissue.  And yeah, I like your idea for PT, even if you can only go for a few sessions, hopefully they should be able to give you some good exercises or stretches for regaining strength and proper range of motion.

Good morning! (afternoon, evening)

I'm not "racing" tomorrow, but I am 90 percent sure I'm going to do a 27 mile bike ride. I did it last year on my hybrid when I was severely under trained, and it was freezing cold and windy. I'd like to try it again this year on the TT bike to redeem myself. It's only $20 and is a fundraiser, this year, for a mission trip.

The forecast for tomorrow morning at 8:00 is 77 with 16 mph winds, with winds increasing as the day goes on. So I should have incentive to finish as quickly as possible.

With that in mind, I'll forgo a ride today, maybe just a little spinning to check the bike out one more time, and try to run 5-6 miles. I was hoping for a 10 mile run tomorrow, but that was before I was going to do the ride, so I will play that one by ear. It seems to me that I could do the ride in the morning, recover, maybe even take a nap, and then run in the afternoon -- when it will be 95 and windy. Ack!

Oh, and I'm going to hit 100+ miles running in May today. I haven't done that since November. And I feel great!

Nice job on the running! Sounds like you are getting in some hardcore training. And I can't beleive the wind - is it always so windy in Kansas, or just in the spring?  And 95!! Although Boston will be 88 on Saturday, guess summer is getting an early start (yay!).  Good luck on the bike ride tomorrow, I've never ridden that far....yet! A 10 miler on top of that in the windy heat - well that would just be crazy hardcore!

Sounds like a great ride! Maybe bring a ski mask just in case?

100-mi month is fantastic. I've had very few of those in my (incredibly unillustrious) running career.

So I didn't go for a run last night, still too sore.  Iced all day yesterday, did the pressure point thing while watching my son's baseball game.  Ouch.  Did some roller dooey too.  Had swim again this morning--no fins!!!!  Still a bit sore, but better and no more cramps.

I was so happy at swim this morning.  We did 2x100 on 2:00 and I got to rest for almost 15 secs on both!!  We also had 4x200 descend 1-4 and I actually did.  I was very proud of myself Laughing.

Oh, and I am racing this weekend.  A mini sprint.

Sounds like a great plan, Felicia, especially getting finished before the winds increase!  Best of luck grinding your old hybrid time into the ground!
