DNF today. I crashed the bike, then 5 miles later had a blowout. Bike is good, I am put back together, so how bad can I be. More later, but it is all good!

Kate, I am sorry for your loss.

Oh no!  Glad you are both ok!

I'd gladly take that over the heat. It's just rain, right? No lightning, tornados, hail, etc?

I'm with you on this one, Ben.  The heat and humidity are killing the joy of running here.

I'm still trying to figure out what makes this year so bad. My run fitness is about as good as I can ever remember it being and I can't really see anything that special in the climate stats considering it's summer, but it's just been beating the heck out of me this year.

Went for a swim at the race site today--man was it ever choppy!!  It wasn't as bad as I thought it might be though, and it is likely to be calm in the AM.  Thanks for all the inspires, feeling excited!

trying to catch up....

Sorry about Shanti the puddy cat.  That's sad

Yanti - my oh my, Kingsley.  MMMM.  And he's a Rottie swimmer - that's badazz.

Skrat - awesome job on the swim and way to HTFU and ride/run today.

Chris - uh oh, glad you're okay.

Good luck to everyone else.

on my run, it didn't rain it got a bit windy but it was cool, zone 2 12.7km.  Takes an age but I enjoy the discipline of trying not to get the alarm on my HRM to go off!

TriAya,

First, congratulations on having a fabulous day and finding a cool guy.
Second, "...because he's blind..."??!!! OMG. Please. No trash talking yourself. You are HOT. He is LUCKY. Your hotness was seared into his brains.

Lordy.

Ran 30 min yesterday. So so so very very sore. What the...? This calls for more running training clearly. I must register for that race. I must....Yes. I will do it. omg....

I suffer from no personal life AND no motivation. What is wrong with me? I have time on my hands!!! I read you guys with children and ageing parents and I think if you can do it, what am I lying here on the couch for? Oh I'm reading this great book! HUH?

Lordy.

Well, we read books too

And the race ... DOOOOO EEEEEEET!!! (Manatee Mantra)

Got to hang out with Kelly Slater for a very little bit at the Oakley Surf Champs here a couple weeks ago. Some incredible sport out there. Made me hungry for the waves again but I have a little Ironman and maybe some insane ocean swimming to do first.

Sorry for the drive-by ... I've been, uh, waylaid.

Yup, still slumming it with one of history's greatest athletes. It's a real toss-up between Sheila T and him (and yes, I'm going to tell her that ). On the one hand, he dominated FIVE Paralympics. On the other hand, she's got a few sports up on him. On Hands-Marie's nineteenth hand which I'm borrowing, he's doing amazing things in ocean swimming now. Still trains with a super-fast squad of mostly young-un up-and-coming teenagers.

The guy's got the pain tolerance of Lance Armstrong. I'm not going to share further but the guy's truly one of the most superlative people I've ever met in every category and a hell of a crazy life story ... and I think it may have just gotten a little crazier.

Also genuinely humble and even shy.

Sorry, I'm kind of smitten. Okay, totally a smitten kitten.

We're going to do one of Sheila's workouts together tomorrow. Wish me luck. (Wish him luck? )

Kate - so very sorry to hear about the snow leopard.

Chris - hoping you (and the bike) are truly OK and you aren't putting on your brave face for us.  Sorry you had a DNF.

Uhhh...blanking on the other updates on other manatees of mention.  Blame it on post-exercise stoopid-brain.

Quick synopsis of my race: went mostly well for me, in fact I was, for a period in time, listed as 3rd AG (AG and not Athena, no Athena div at this race) on the unofficial results, so we stuck around to watch/wait for the kids' race to be run then awards only to not hear my name called.  I don't quite get it, how can someone just 'appear' in the midst of the others?  Guess there was some sort of snafu, don't know what yet.

But that little let down is truly insignificant compared to what I *think* happened during the race.  I think something bad happened to at least one swimmer.  Don't want to talk out of school just yet 'til I learn some details, but many, many things point in that direction.  Please pray for the person(s?) and their family if something indeed did happen.  Crying now thinking about it and I'm shaken.  I'm hoping this has a good outcome, but I'm not too sure it will.

Oh man, I hope that you are mistaken. I'm glad the race went well for you; sounds like, even with the AG SNAFU, you did wonderfully.

Melanie, I am so sorry to hear of the incident in your race. That is never good, I am hoping for the best.

My race was not stellar, but I learned a bit of stuff that should have been obvious to me before.

I survived...in fact, I beat the time I thought I would hit! I ran in at just under 3 hours, and actually felt pretty good through the whole race (well not the last 2 miles, but I'll save that for the RR). I am surprised, because, apart from the feet being a bit achy and my right knee joint being a bit sore, I am feeling REALLY good today. maybe just a little tired, but that's it. I had a lot of fun. Ready for the weird part? As I was running, one thing that really kept me going was Shanti...I just kept picturing her padding along next to me, and every time I slowed down, I could just see her turning to me and giving me her old toothless(she was missing a few teeth--the big, scary ones mainly) snarl/hiss to urge me on....told ya, it was weird, but it helped. At the end of the race, I said a final goodbye to her. I think it was just what I needed to do.

I will write a race report once I have official results, but I feel pretty good over all. Swim was a disaster (foggy goggles and overcast skies are a bad combination.) Bike was shortened and epic. Run was uneventful. Race was delayed because of storms, but it went off and was 70F and raining the whole race, so ideal for this Oregon gal.

Hate when they bring in a "surprise" on the time sheets.  It has happened more often than I can count where I have stood around thinking a friend was going to get an AG award, only to be shut down by a "secret" placer who's time did not make it to the public time sheet.

Hope whatever happened has a good outcome.  I just heard about a bad boating accident (ski boat crossed over and broke the tow line for 3 kids on a tube) on one of our local lakes.  Sounds like 2 of the kids needed lifesaving efforts and their current conditions are unknown.  Keeping all those in or on the water in my prayers today.

I'm with you on this one, Ben.  The heat and humidity are killing the joy of running here.

I ran late today, in the humidity and heat.  It was a great run, not for either of those reasons but I did find the joy.

A run is definitely gonna suck if you set the intention ahead of time that it is going to suck.  Sorry Jo, but you are right, your run is going to suck.  Self-fulling prophecies are more of a sure thing than a surprise that something is going to be better than you expect.

Spent the day exploring ancient ruins with DH, DS1 & DS2. Great weekend! Now we've delivered DS2 to the train station (the bike may or may not have made it on) and now DS1 and I are hanging at Sbux waiting to go to the race site.
