Is a snorkel legal?

yes, under USAT.  Specific races can say they won't allow them, if they want to.

just to be clear, a usat race (director) can only do this with written approval from usat received prior to the race.  they can't just go changing rules.

edit to add and not directed at you tony... i'd like to see an example of this happening.  show me one and i'll show you an rd with a lot of other things he/she needs to worry about.

i'm wrong.  an rd can add this snorkel rule without the written approval from usat.  same for the shoe in pedals.  below is paraphrased from communication i just had with a usat official.

basically the RD can do what he wants as far as imposing additional rules.... Also allows individual RDs to impose differnet rules to make their race safer, fairer, etc

edit.. -10 to tony for wiki reference

SSMinnow - 2010-03-30 11:17 AM The first ride on my new GURU was SWEET.....even if it was inside doing another one of those 3x20 Blind LT rides!!!

PS. I am totally behind on the chatter...according to John it isn't worth me trying to catch up!

Short version:

Kim continues to be a ROCK STAR.

Sam and Tony had a great weekend, with Sam getting a podium finish on a great run.

Some pic were posted of a tri with an indoor pool swim.  Some funny ones including a guy who wore a snorkel.  Posts about whether the snorkel is legal.  Then posts about reading the rules and athlete's guide.  Posts about knowing the rules.  Posts about the fact that shoes not allowed to be clipped on at Lonestar.

Trevor George and John going back and forth with one another about editing each other's posts and who is slower to respond with a quick retort to the other.

I think that catches you up since the weekend.  Sorry if I missed anything/anyone.

Don't lump me in with those 2!!

Hey, thanks for the update...I was pretty lost over the exchanges that started last night and then gave up!!

I realize I am jumping the gun, but tomorrow is a rest day (yes, I know another one) and a travel day for me so I won't be around much.....the highlight of my month of course was returning to the running world....hope to continue that trend into April.  And I swear if I don't get my bike(s) out soon it they will disown me.

March's totals:
Bike:26h 25m  - 498.1 Mi
Run:13h 28m 14s  - 89.25 Mi
Swim:17h 44m 27s  - 41900 Yd

Hey everyone!  Hopefully I can get back to the comp a little more regularly.  I finally have some more help at work.  It's tough working 14 hour days and training.  Doesn't leave much time to check in.

I return begging for some advice.  First off, back up to one week ago yesterday.  I had a decent ride (easy 35 miles) and swim (1500m).  Felt great.  Woke up Tuesday morning and could not walk - literally.  I felt like somebody was stabbing my left knee with a knife.  I could not move!  Finally it loosened up a bit and I could get around.  During the middle of the day, I was fine.  Back to normal.  I had a run scheduled that evening.  It went great - 5 miles pain free.  Wednesday morning, again, I could not walk same pain.  This time the pain stuck around all day.  I got on the phone with my sports doc at 7 pm, he told me he would meet me at his office.  He twisted, turned, pushed and poked but could not simulate the pain.  Same thing from a buddy of his who is a PT that came by- nothing.  We tried X rays.  Showed nothing.  Everything looked great.   Instead of going with an MRI,  because of the cost, he wanted to wait it out.  A combination of scaling back the training and ibuprofen were his recommendations.   They both seemed to think it could be a slight tear on the outer part of the meniscus, but should heal itself.  He actually said I can still bike and run, but avoid any twisting.  It has now been a week and I don't know what to do.  I can navigate steps and inclines without any pain.  I got on the trainer yesterday to test it out-  30 minutes with no pain.  I had a great swim yesterday too and could feel it every once in a while when I would forget not to kick.

I guess now, my question is - should I try running.  I am scared to for two reasons.  #1 it could be painful (but I can tough that out) #2  If it hurts, I go with an MRI which shows a tear that needs surgery.  End result - I have to pull out of IMLOO.  My other dilemma - Begin IM training in two weeks without much run base but could be fully healed or start running to build up the base.  What should I do?

Since this has been on my mind has been on this I have weighed other options.  I thought about the MRI sooner than later if it hurts and could consider the B2B full.  I just always wanted my first IM to be M Dot event.  Thanks in advance for any advice / experiences you can share.  I'm pretty bummed right now.

Another chaotic day at work that almost threw my workouts for a loop but I decided I am in control of my day and took it back.  After about 11 hours at work today I came home to a sick wife who had dinner almost totally ready, have I mentioned how great she is?  I got done and since it was the first day in the 70s, I was going to run, I had planned on 6 miles but was thinking of doing 3 or 4 since it was later and I had not taken much time for my food to digest.  Out the door I went and clicked start on the Garmin 6:50:27 PM... 50 seconds later... it died.  Ok a blind run, not exactly what I had planned, but why not.  I ran my route, heading out reverse of normal so I could either get 4 or 6 in if I decide I have enough light.

Feeling good at the start I knew my pace was probably hanging out low 8 minute mile (on the quick side for me)  I wanted to push but not puke.  I hit about every light possible at bad times, but kept going.  I decide there is plenty of light and I wanted to do my 6 and prove that my day was not gonna get the best of me.  6.13 miles to be exact (using the same route from a few previous runs)  I got home, quickly turned on the watch and started another lap so I could get the timestamp.  7:41:41... meaning I ran it in 51:14 an 8:21 minute per mile average.  Not too shabby.

A few other positives to the day, my wifes tri bike is now sold.  She wanted to go back to a road bike and just get some clip on aero bars, and the tri bike was just not quite right for her.  Bike shopping this weekend!

sorry to hear this man.  i'd stick with what the doc and pt say.  if the mri is an option financially then hit it.  its hard i know but try not to worry about racing right now.  get fixed up so you can put forth your best effort, even if than means an non-mdot or waiting to 2011.

Hey

I know we have talked about this, but I agree with Linda, go with the MRI and get the info you need.  If you feel you need to test the knee,  get on the TM and walk and slowly try to run.  If it hurts the least little bit, shut it down. Seriously, nothing is gained from running with pain and then setting yourself back from your goal race. Or the next goal race.

Who is going to have some fun racing this weekend? Give us a sneak peak into your strategy....

For those of us still waiting to have that fun, what's the one thought or strategy that you are going to take into your next race to make yourself bullet proof?

Thanks for the advice.  I have made the decision to go ahead and suck it up and get the info I need with an MRI.  Actually, it works out quite well.  I contacted my insurance company yesterday to get the details of what is covered.  They told me that if I could get an MRI done in the doc's office (like my x-rays), it would just cost me my copay ($45).  I'm there.  Contacting my doc today to set it up.  My hesitation was that I seem to be improving everyday.  If I just wait a little longer, I might be back to 100%.  I think I am going to give the treadmill a shot today and see what happens.  Wish me luck!

Good choice. get the MRI, then you know what you are dealing with. No point sitting around waiting for some type of pain to return.

So had a great ride last night. Our hall where we were to spin was double booked. So we had the option of riding at home on the trainer, or meet up and knock out some hill repeats. WOW. nice to get outside and actually ride the bike. Hill was a little gravelly(??) so had to be a bit timid on the downhill, but pumped out 5 or 6 good steady 1km climbs last night.
Was cold 7C(low 40's) and windy, but so nice to get outside again.

Hey guys - just checking in.

Chris - sorry to hear about the pain in your knee.  Hope the MRI gives good results!

I had a great run last night!  I went over to the LRS to join their group run - a 5 mile hilly route starting/ending at the store.  Unfortunately (or maybe fortunatelySmile), my Garmin wouldn't lock on to satellites for some reason so I just turned it off and ran for fun.  Estimated time was about 1 hour for the 5 miles which is very good for me, especially considering the hills on the route.  I needed the hillwork though to get ready for my upcoming HM.  I feel like I'm ready now, so just another 10 days or so of easy running and I'll be good to go!

Slow and steady wins the race!  Okay, so I won't actually "win", LOL, but if I can keep a steady pace through the whole 13.1 miles, I'll consider it a win for me!

Not racing, one more month until I do my first 5k that I just registered for after getting the go-ahead from my coach! It'll be fun to run down Fremont Street! :-)

Still waiting for my race!  My one thought is to make sure that I EAT on the bike. I know I have a Sprint, and more likely will not eat/drink on the run, but I have to keep in mind to eat on the bike. Nutrition is one of those things that I occasionally have a hard time dealing with, especially with a LONG ride. The ADA Tour de Cure is coming up fast, so I'm going to focus on my nutrition and hope that I can keep it the same for the sprint tri.  The ADA ride is not a race, so I'm just going at a leisure pace.

Great job on your run, Janet!!!  Sometimes we need a break from that Garmin.  Good luck this weekend on your race and have FUN!

Those pics from Sam and Tony's race were pretty funny...always wonder what evil thoughts are going through the photographer's minds when they snap those inopportune moments

Chris- sorry to hear about your knee...sounds like a really good plan to have the MRI done...you will have a good recovery plan after that and be ready for your IM training.

Well, my legs are feeling pretty much back to normal and I had a great jog today with the pooch.  I really love the HIM distance...it is challenging but doesn't beat your body up too much.

The CA70.3 course is awesome and I think it should be the next "lonestar" for this group!  C'mon, what say you???  I know early season HIM's are tough but think of what great shape you'll be in training over the holidays and winter hibernating months...snow and winter?  No problem, trainer, treadmill and pool!  Well, apparently for me, I have to do OWS...and lots of it

Okay, I have a problem.  I tightened the things that hold the rear wheel in place so tightly that I couldn't get the end of the trainer skewer out of the little silver thing.  Tony, I know you know what I am talking about!   Anyhow, I've tried a wrench, but to no avail.  I got my bike free by just unscrewing the other side on the day we left for Oceanside, out of pure desperation, but now I have a bike workout tomorrow, that if I can't figure it out, I'm "screwed"  lol.  anyhow, any suggestions?  I don't want to strip anything.

Also, when I uploaded my Garmin info to training center, it saved it in Multisport function, fancy that!  And when I uploaded that into Training Peaks, it doesn't show all of the data.  Any tips there?

I know that I have thanked you all, but thank you again.  Lots of emotions and Cora's service is not until next week.  I truly appreciate the community and family that is SWBKRUN!

Kim,

I am afraid of sharks, so Oceanside would be tough.  I didn't forward you the article from ST where they said that someone was running in that area and saw a sea lion sitting on a rock. When they came back there was 1/2 a sea lion sitting on the rock....

As for the CT.  Do you mean the inner knobs or the outer knobs?  I have found sometime I have to undo the inner knobs until they are right up next to the outer knobs and use both sets to un-screw it.

Does that make sense.
