SSMinnow - 2009-08-14 11:00 AM Hey Tracy--The thought of 66F water and 50F air temperature sounds pretty good to this Wisconsinite.  That is about what it is like at our house in Nothern WI a lot of the summer.  Then I read on about the course and fainted. Surprised.  I am grunting like a mule going up the 375ft 1m climb on the IM Course.  I would be spending a lot of time on my feet in Savageman! YOWZA.

.

The main problem with the temperature is that it will still be quite hot in NC in September and then to go to the shock of cold water is hard.  And if you read my RR from last year I spent a LOT OF TIME on my feet with my bike.  However I am determined to take a big chunk of time off last year!  Excuse me now while I go climb a hill then puke!!  Gggggggrrrrrrr

I'mready to puke right with you just looking at that grid. I have looked at my HIm but it isn't as bad as that.

My next race is the SAVAGEMAN Olympic in September. The race organizers just sent out an email with a detailed breakdown of the race course.  Doesn't this sound just peachy?  Major uuggghhhh!!!

That run climb at the 4.5 mile mark would be my concern.  At least on a bike you can change gears - on the run it's just you and your legs.

Seeing those profiles motivates me to get out and do something though.

Yes, but if you are in the granny gear and still about to tip over you are screwed.  At least when you are attempting to run up a 10% grade hill or greater, you can stop and walk.  I was pondering that very thought during my hill run today.  My HIM has big stupid steep hills and a lot of them.  As I practice on these types of hills around here, become totally gassed, I wondered whether walking the steepest part made the most sense to save myself from the embarrasment of a full blown asthma attack, puking and whatever other malady might pop up.  A question I will ask Steve when I see him on the course on Tuesday.

roni_runnw - 2009-08-13 12:47 PM I can't keep up with you guys, but I'd like to stick around too.   LOVE all the pics... even Steve's capri's Thanks for setting up the photo site, very cool.

Janet- Sending good vibes your way! You'll do great! x3 on just spin up the hills in a low gear.

I'd like your opinions on something. I have a sprint Sunday. It's not an A race, but I would like to do well. It's, sort of, my measurement on improvement from year to year since it was my first, and I've done it each year. My dilemma is... I have a 10 mile run scheduled for Saturday on my training plan for my next HIM (9/26) and my 50k (12/5). I think if I do the 10 mile run Saturday or even Friday I won't be able to do my best at the sprint, but if I skip it it will mess with my build for the 50k (the following week is 12 miles). I think I'll probably be alright for the HIM since I'll have more long runs before that and even longer than the 13.1, so I guess my real concern is messing with the build phase of the 50k plan. Any thoughts?

Can you do the long run on Tuesday?  I did that a couple weeks when I had a sprint.

The other option is to just do the 10 miler after your sprint.  A. It's only a 5k for the race, and B. I can't believe I am saying this, it's only 10 miles.  drop in the bucket for 50k training.

I know I am late to the game on this one, but I agree w/ Tony on this... Part of training for the 50k is training tired legs.  I think some training plans call for 20 miles one day, 18 the next.

BINGO!!!   I'm not saying this is the toughest course by any means.  Our boy John did a Half Iron in and out of canyons in amazing heat, Kim runs around San Fransisco all the time, Steve did the mountains of Canada for a full IM (2x), etc,   but it is enough to make me pee my pants b/c I have to do it!!!

Rob,  if you save the image as a jpeg that helps for some reason.

Janet,  sorry I didn't post this earlier. Great photo and good luck this weekend.  I'll bet that new bike will make a huge difference.  Stay tough girl!

Oh, and I must brag.  I got a pedicure last night and the black callus I have on my toe from running is still there!  I am so proud that I've developed a callus so tough a pedicure couldn't remove it.  I guess I'm a runner now!!!

NOT IF YOU ARE NURSING A POTENTIAL INJURY!

Tracy and Steve, I was just thinking during my last mani/pedi how cool it was I did not have any more black toenails.   Dropping my running mileage in half has done wonders for my feet!!

So I am at Masters today at lunch in the 50m outdoor pool.  On my left are 3 girls from the Auburn swim team (enough to keep one motivated and as the day progresses I am really feeling totally defeated in that I feel like I am swimming super slow.  I mean these kids are just making me look like I am swimming backwards!  And the guy on my right seems to be swimming twice as fast as I am.

So I pull up at one point to talk to the coach, and I tell him that I am feeling super slow and if he can put an eye on me to see if he can see what the deal is.  Then he informs me that the guy swimming in the lane to my right is like the 15th fastest guy in the world.  So at that point I sucked it up and didn't let my ego get in the way the rest of the workout.

That's fair, but I prefer riding up hills over running up them (or walking them).

Tracy, how about a new cassette?  What cassette do you have?  And what rings up front?

What are these Black toenails that you guys are talking about???  I guess 25 mile weeks don't give you black toenails...I hope I can avoid that...yuck. Sounds like Steve is very proud of his!

Tracy, just remember the Winston Churchill quote on your sig. line and you will do great!  That graph just looks mean.

Yeah, me too... Luckily my gym's swimmers are not much in the way of swimmers - really more like floaters...  I swear one of them was spitting water straight up into the air like he was clearing his blow-hole...

Nice vacation spot Chris...nice.

Dude, I have no idea why this keeps happening.  It started like a month ago!  I think my fingers are just getting fatter!  I thought you were supposed to lose weight while exercising!

BTW, I challenge you to make a trip down south and do a tri.  This way I can pass along the HTFU on to you on a 35C degree day with 100% humidity.  I notice your temp range in your logs was between 11C and 23C?  It hasn't been 23C here during the day since March!

Jeepguy2358 - 2009-08-14 7:55 AM My wife and I are booking our vac. for 2010 this week.  Check out where we are staying:

http://www.wimco.com/villa-rentals/tortola/west-end/high-point.aspx

We stayed here last time:

http://www.wimco.com/villas/villa.aspx?pid=897813

Due to our schedules, we can't take too many vacations, but when we go, we do it right!

Outstanding!  How was Long Bay Beach?  You need to post some pics in the album.

Long Bay Beach was amazing.  Actually both trips have been amazing!  We are going to St. John for 2 or 3 days then heading to Tortola for 5 this time.  It is an amazing place to just relax.  Last time, we didn't have a tv, cell phone or internet for a week.  It was awesome.  Food is amazing.  People are really friendly.  You really can't beat it.  I would highly recommend it to others.  I'll post a few pics.

Lots to comment on.

I heard GH and Levi would be riding for BMC next year.

Also Tracy those are some brutal hills, Sam and I rode some of them while we were in deep creek, wouldn't like to have to race on them then run afterwards.

Barry, do you live in AL?  I will be down there in a couple weeks playing golf in Brimingham, Auburn and one other city.

Also you and Chris are doing Augusta 70.3 right?  Will be interested in reading your RR's, I was looking at that for my end of season race next year.

LOL, long day at Kings Dominion with the kids (Amusement Park), almost 9:00PM, off to get my 5 miles in for the day.

I had a very weird/crazy run today.  I ran the central park loop for the first time since the race and man did I struggle.  The sun, heat and humidity hit me hard today.  My HR was pretty high throughout the run and I just felt extremely hot like I was overheating.  I ended-up running the last 3 miles shirtless and hatless, the first time i did this all yr.  The weird/crazy thing was as I was cooling down and walking to the gym to shower I ran into my ex-girlfriend.  I haven't seen her in 9-10 yrs..  I was so exhausted and disoriented from the run I didn't know what to say to her.  she probably thought I was weird walking shirtless with a hr belt on and being all dazed.  Not really the way you would want to see an ex...

that was painful... Cruddy lunch at the park + my quickly thrown together rice/pork/garlic/onion/egg/carrot dinner = stomach pains while running.

upside is I did get to use my head light, all those people going to parties and bars that I ran by must have thought I was pretty cool...Cool

The discussion of the Savage Man course from earlier got me curious so I checked it out.

I like how they have a mandatory bike inspection. And if it fails you will not be allowed to ride.  They even go as far as making this suggestion "...All participants, no matter how strong, should consider a 27 tooth cassette or compact cranks. Average to weaker cyclists should consider compact cranks or a triple front chainring or risk walking their bike. "

Sounds awesome!

Tony, I used to mow using my headlamp (when I push mowed about 3/4 hilly acres).  My neighbors were always impressed.
