Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ckunst - 2011-01-09 9:41 PM If you can count shoveling snow as strength training, then we've done some. Because of the snow and ice around here (western MI), most of our biking has been at spin classes at the Y. Would anyone like to comment on how well spin classes do or do not prepare someone for an Ironman bike leg. Also, knowing that I have to replace some poor swimming technique with better form, I have just ordered Total Immersion Swimming DVD for help in this area. Has anyone worked with this method and if so, any opinion or advice? I think that spin classes are a great alternative to riding outside or inside on the training. Whatever you can do to mix it up and spin the pedals will help you in the end. If you live in the north, you need to explore alternatives to get some training in before you can get outside. As for TI, no help there, but let me know how it goes as my swim certainly can use some help. |

Mental toughness maybe. The music at spin classes hurts my soul. I really have to HTFU to get through those sessions. |

Jan/Feb are always the hardest months of training for us in the NE..... once march hits, time really starts to fly..... I am settling back into being consistent again, especially on the bike. Running outside has been a challenge with dark mornings and all of this snow we have been getting hammered with. Fortunately the temps in the morning haven't been below 20, which is still pretty warm for running. |

![]() Nice ride, Doug. Only roughly two more months of grinding it out inside. WE CAN DO THIS PEOPLE!!! |

Been getting it done but longing for the days of it being warm enough to head out at 4:45am for a 2hr ride before work.... March is close! I have a disney vacation Jan 30th that should break things up nicely. Mike, I must say the consistent volume you've been able to get in is impressive in itself. Nice time management skills. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Started back with my coach and structured training Monday but with weather and some family things haven't stayed on track very well which is not like me. My knee and pes anserine is getting better. PT is focusing on glute medius (hip strength) with lots of PT strength work every day. I tend to collapse my knee at times which they think is why I had this. I see 2 more months of indoor training which seems tolerable. Will be focusing on raising my FTP on the bike and improving my stroke since my run training is limited. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Training is going alright right now. Been pretty beat over the past few days due to the doubles along with getting back into the grind with school...I kind of feel like I am surviving via nap time. 30-60min powernap!! Haha. Tomorrow is my rest day....1 more swim to get through! This week everything has been indoors...we have been -30C plus windchill...treadmill and track workouts + trainer rides all week. I have 2 runs this weekend...hopefully I can get out one of those days. 1 more week till my HM in San Diego!! Getting away from this cold and snow. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great work everyone! Training is going really well here too. My biggest challenge is remembering which lap I'm on while swimming... so if that's my biggest challenge I think i'm doing pretty well there! But I always feel so great after these long swim workouts... maybe I'm not training hard enough! ![]() Biking is going great too - I am breaking in the new bike nicely (mostly on the trainer) but have also been out a couple of times. I'm doing an indoor trainer class on Saturday at the LBS with my local tri club that I'm excited about to keep things interesting. I downloaded a software program called Turbo Crank for the indoor workouts to keep things a little more interesting (my training plan is calling for mostly solid work in a low HR zone so I'm using that to spice it up). Haven't tried the Spinervals Lake Placid DVD yet! Running is always great. I've been doing most of my runs around the National Mall area in DC per the usual but have been adding some Rock Creek park runs in for hill work. I'm used to doing most of my running and racing on pancake flat roads so hopefully this race will force me out of my comfort zone there. Aside from that, it's just a blast reading and learning all about the sport and this new distance! So far so good :-) I always appreciate all the help and support here! Ryan |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My training has been going well. I've been managing to get in about 2 hours a day, 6 days a week and coming off a few fall marathons and an ultra, my running base is pretty solid. Started swimming this week and hit the pool twice (last Jan I hit the pool zero times, so already this is an improvement). I need to get some spin classes though, the time on the stationary bike is pretty dull and it's too cold for me to ride outside. Anyone know of any NYC spin classes with good instructors that are at the YMCA (I have a city wide membership b/c there is one across the street from my apt, but so far, their spin instructors kinda suck). Also, I'm helping to start an NYC Tri club this March, sponsors are on board and we're getting even more... it's gonna be rad! PM me if you're interested, or if you can answer my spin instructor question!! Good luck everyone! |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Getting back into swimming has started to throw my running off balance. Swimming really tires out my lower legs which means I cramp up when I run. Hopefully my body will adapt rather quickly in the next week or so. |

PM me if you're interested, or if you can answer my spin instructor question!! Good luck everyone! Try to find cyclists that teach spin classes instead of fitness instructors that teach them. You may want to make a few calls and ask different Ys about their instructors. Do you not have a trainer? |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i am starting to get more serious about my training... the month of december i skipped a ton of days. I have been working the core training for 2 months and am beginning to ramp up the intensity, february is when I start. I am traveling the last 2 weeks in January and will have limited ability to train except for some running. i have been on my trainer and hammering some swims, but have backed off the run to recover and to get ready for the intense training that is beginning to kick in ![]() 2011 Race Schedule 5/11 Columbia Triathlon 6/11 Eagleman 7/11 IMLP |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Placid Peeps! Week 2 of official training is coming to a close and I have successfully hit all my prescribed workouts. It's mostly been testing and building up strength in all 3 disciplines. So far I'm loving it - and not minding the early morning wake up calls! Question for you guys... and I don't remember if this has already been answered in last year's thread (yes, I did read through it - great info!)... but are most of you racing Placid on a tri bike or road? I currently have a Jamis road bike that I love and I got a great deal on about a year and a half ago. It has an aero style frame and after putting Profile Design aero bars on it, I feel so comfortable. I know placid is a hilly course so I'm thinking I won't miss having a tri bike (well, besides being green with envy that 90% have them!). Do any vets think I would be at any disadvantage on this particular course on a road bike? Happy Training! |
![]() ![]() |
Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() aggie- depends on your goals, but in general you won't be in any disadvantage using your road bike. The tri bike will make you faster, provided you spend 70-80% of the time in aero bars. LP is a course that will force you out of aero at several points on the course; or at least it makes little sense to be aero so you may as well sit up.... Also, handling a tri bike on the keene decent is going to be much different than a tri bike, asi n much more difficult. If your goal is to finish, no need to change at all. If you have very specific time goals and want to go as fast as you can go; consider the tri-bike..... Of course, there is the happy factor. If you want a tri bike, and can afford it, than go get it....no need to justify your purchase with anything beyond that!... ![]() |
