I use gels and candy.  Really you need sugar.  I cut twizzlers in 1/2 and they fit nicely in a bento box.  They dont' melt, don't break and don't crummble.  Infinately more tastey than a gel   I have used laffy taffy and air heads.  Also mini payday bars.  I can buy a pound of twizzlers for the cost of about 3 gels.  I use acclerade/lavasalt mix for my fluid.  I like the taste and I can carry more than enough for needs

Red Vines are better than Twizzlers!!!

Hi Guys,

Just wondering, whats your wheelset recommendations for IMFL?  I currently run a SRAM60/80 and am wondering if I should change it to 80/80 or even 80/disc(areocover that is).  How are the winds typically ?

Regards from Iceland,

Could be little to nothing or quite strong (20-30MPH).  I have riden HED3s the last 3 times I did the race and struggled the first and last 10 miles of the bike along the beach due to strong cross winds coming off the water and thru the condos lining the beach.  Felt like the bike was coming out from under me.  I just switched to SRAM 60s front and back and they handle TONS better in a cross wind. If you are a very strong rider accustomed to dealing with strong cross winds you will probably be fine.  Safest thing would be to bring both wheels sets and ride around a bit when you get to the venue.

I believe we are just 99 days away from race day. How is everyone's training coming along?

I'm feeling pretty good about the training now that I can run again.  I injured myself the day after I signed up.  Yup.  Bad luck.  And I had awful tendonitis for about 8 months.  It's finally manageable and I'm back up to 12 miles.  Swim is AWESOME!  I have done two 5K open water swim races and I'm swimming about 4 times a week for 40,000 yards per month.  Bike is going well...I have 3 centuries under my belt and although I'm not as fast as I'd like to be, I'm getting the miles in.

I'm using the Galloway method of run/walk/run this time to avoid further injury from running.  I did the swim and bike at Gulf Coast HIM this spring and the roads were nice.  The wind is not my friend.  I hope it stays away on November 5.

Good luck to everyone doing the race....we are below the 100 day mark now and I have to admit I am starting to get a bit nervous.

I have been using Hammer Nutrition's Perpetuem, Gels and Enduralytes,  also the Powerbar Ironman Perform and FRS drink mix.  I like the idea of goin at it with all only in liqued fuel form for faster digestion and a much less chance of stomach distress.

Perpetuem is dialed in to how much you need serving wise per hour based on your body weight..Same as the Gels and Enduralyte.

My wieght being 148 I use 1 scoop=135 calories per hour x6=810 calories. am planning a 6 hour 112 mile ride so I make a 6 hour bottle of this stuff - 6 scoops in a 24oz bottle and the rest water..Tastes great.  On the gels I use 6 servings=90 calories per serving or 540 calroies for the 6 hour time frame in a gel flask on the bike.  In another gel flask I put 6 servings of Enduralyte power + a small packet of FRS lowcal powered drink mix and water..This is somewhat concentrated so I chase each sip with water... I then will have 2 - 24oz bottles of Powbar Ironman Perform=210 calories per bottlex2=420 calories.  I will sip these gradually in somewhat alternating 20 minute increments through each hour and chasing with water.. Powerbar Ironman Perform maybe every 10minutes or so...

So  Perpetuem-810 calories/Gels 540 calories/Perform 420 calories, nothing much from the Enduralyte and FRS maybe 10 calories = 1770 divided by 6=295 calories per hour.. I am experimenting with upping the dose of either Perpetuem or Gels or both to bring the calories per hour up to 300 or a bit over...  I will most likely have a backup bottle in my special needs bag at the halfway point.

I tried all of this on a 100 mile ride on my trainer a weekago and ran 2 miles after and felt preety good..like I hade been recovering the entire time..The stuff digests very well too...very good stuff.

On the run I plan to just ues gels and some of them having a little protein in them. 1 to 2 per hour with water and Powerbar Ironman Perform.

Of and the FRS stuff,, if you have not tried it it's good stuff,,B1,2,3,6&12 + vitamins C&E,,really gives you a good gradual kick..

Hope this helps,

kandk

I was right on schedule and following my plan exactly until last Saturday. During my run, I strained my calf muscle. Does not hurt to swim or bike so I took the week off of running and just did the swim and bike workouts. Tried to run last night and I am back in pain today. 14 weeks to get back on my feet, I guess better now than later.

Last year at the race I did not see to many bikes with disk back wheels. I did see alot of people with 808 front and back and also with 404 front and 808 or 1080 back wheels. I dont think you would go wrong with the SRAM60/80. I am planning on running Zipp 808 front and back. I have heard the winds are not to bad most of the time.

Disc always unless it's not allowed (like Kona or IMCoz)...

Here's a discussion I had on the subject back in May in the IMTX thread.  My points in blue:

I'll be riding some deep dish wheels as well.  SRAM S80 front and back; similar to the Zipp 808s, but much much cheaperLaughing  Did many training rides on the coarse with them and they handled well, even with the winds.

SRAM S60 front S80 rear...totally agree with the price comment

x3. A disc should be fine though. the winds have been from the north or the south, so not much crosswind on the course. Hopefully the weather will be like today but without the wind.

The main determining factor for control is the front wheel and not the rear wheel. The disc stabilizes the bike in the wind. It counters the wind steer on the front of the bike. If the wind increases, it pushes the bike toward the wind, while the front gets pushed away, and vice versa. Think of a weather vane.

The deeper the front wheel, the harder it is to control.  All the talk about the disc being sketchy in the wind is wives tale garbage.  The fact race organizers ban discs at certain races (like Kona) shows an overall lack of knowledge on their part.  The disc actually helps control the bike, not the other way around.

GMAN

I understand that logic for head winds and tail winds, and agree with it (thus my comment regarding the prevailing winds lately being from the south or occasionally the north). For cross winds though, with that logic (i.e. the weather vane), a strong crosswind would try to spin the bike perpendicular to the road...or just blow it sideways. Right?

No, the wind would not spin the bike perpendicular to the road or blow you sideways.  First, you have forward motion on a bike which is different than if you were just sitting still.  To use the weather vane analogy further: a weather vane has an aerodynamic shape (an arrow) in which the front end is obviously thinner than the thick back end of the weather vane (analogous to running a smaller dished front wheel like a 60mm to the full disc rear wheel).  These aerodynamics allow the front to point into the wind.  The shallower the front, the easier the aerodynamics are to get it to point into the wind.  So a real deep front wheel (like a Zipp 1080 or Hed Jet 9 or arguably a Hed H3) is harder to control than say a Zipp 404 or Hed Jet 6 because it's harder to "pivot" from an aerodynamics standpoint.  Therefore, the rider has to compensate for the "extra" pivoting... which is why a deeper front wheel is harder to control.

Florida Training

Jeepguy, Irondg and myself are heading down Aug. 12 - 14 for some IM training.  I had mentioned this a few weeks ago, but it is confirmed that it is a go.  If anyone would like to join, our plan is to arrive friday and ride saturday and sunday.  I am sure we will fit a run, swim and cocktail or two in the plan also.

If anyone is interested in joining let me know.

Any suggestions for lodging?

I totally agree.  I ride HED 3s and am thinking of replacing the front wheel for IMFL but keeping the HED 3 in the back.

We will be staying at the Sunbird condos which is right beside the start.  Should be able to get a room there reasonable.  PM me if you want my number and more info, but should be fun.

Did my first 100 mile ride on Saturday. I was fine up to mile 85 then started fading. I am assuming this is because my longest previous ride was 83 miles. I have a few more long rides on the schedule so that should help with those later miles. Besides that, I feel good about my training. Since this is my first 140.6 I don't know what to expect, but based on my training plan I am ahead of schedule.

Roads for the IMFL are pretty good for riding. I see no reason why you couldn't ride the course on your own other than finding place to refill on fluids.

I'm not local but I have made that drive several times. It all depends on which side of Destin you are on and how bad the traffic is. I think from city limit to city limit it is 30-40 minutes, so I would say 1 hour is a good, conservative estimate.

Not a local anyomore, but I did live there for years.  It isn't that far, but so many variables, give yourself an hour.

Noooo.  Please.  Tell me you didn't really do 100 miles indoors.  I think I'd be ready to run two miles up the walls and across the ceiling after that.

So I'm guessing that you are mentally ready for the IMFL bike course already !
