Hi All...

I had a great day on the HIM course today.  Spent an hour in the water, swimming and getting some more technique improvements from Steve, the best of which was learning to breathe in the trough my head makes...kind of amazing when it works.  Ride was great, run was tough, but again got some different techniques to power up those 10% grade hills.  I'm as ready as I will ever be so bring on the fun!

DougRob - 2009-08-18 5:56 PM Tony and I had a really great ride today. Wnet from Sam and his house to Haines Point, did laps there and came back up through Roslyn. Only got rained on for the last 5 minutes. 28 miles in total. Hey Tony how long did that take us? I did not start my Garmin at the right time.

BTW Sam and Tony's kids are real cute, even with the poop knock-knock jokes!

Doug

Doug, its precisely because of the poop knock-knock jokes that they are cute...

That Sam...She must have some pretty powerful genes!!!

155 situps tonight are you kidding me? I'm a friggin' machine now!!! Week 3 Day 1 down.

When we had our 1st child 4 years ago, we bought a fancy double running type stroller thing used for $300. Retail about $700. We decided it is taking up to much room in the garage. So I sold it today for....$350. Yep used it for 4 years and got more than we paid for it. No wonder my wife loves me so muchWink

JHagerman - 2009-08-18 2:48 PM Who here uses what suit?  I understand that I'll see a huge difference from the SEADOO suit that I have now... ehghhem.  So do I go with the less expensive (read: more affordable) or go for the better suit and spend the extra cash.  Anyone know the real difference between the two suits and then, would I notice the difference in suits?

I could not tell you the difference, but I use the Vortex 3.  I got it because that was what they sent me when I rented one from them last year and really liked it.  I've only worn it once since I bought it but, really like it.  Plus, it was only $149.  Pretty easy to justify.

DougRob - 2009-08-18 7:36 PM BTW: Sam was sick so she did not ride with us. Here is hoping she gets well soon! I think I have now met more SWBKRUN MG members in personthan anyone else (4). That will change next year in Texas of course!

Doug

I'm sort of back from the dead.  I'm at work at least.  UGH!!!  Sorry I missed the chance to chat and ride w/ you both.  I spent the evening curled up in a ball hoping the kids wouldn't burn the house down.  Tony came upstairs about an hour after Rob left and collapsed.  He was sick as well.

Rob - I'll apologize ahead of time if you come down w/ something.  It was nice meeting you even if it was briefly.  I hope to see you in TX in April.  :-)

That's impressive - both the situps and the stroller.

I THINK I AM GETTING A TRI BIKE TOMORROW!!!!!!!   I am friends with a guy who owns a Trek shop in town and every year he gets the latest Equinox demo model and therefore sells the previous year's demo bike with a great discount.  Bonus that it has very low milage on it b/c he was injured most of last year.  Sorry for him but great for me.    I am going to give her a test ride tomorrow.  I am so excited!  The only bumber is even if I get it I don't think I'll ride her at Savageman.  That course screams road bike.  Maybe I'll dump my Doug and do the Ironman on my own so I can race the bike.  JJ Cool

Suzy,  great job on your training day. WOW!  And by the way, they are now making Trek Equinox's in an XS frame size.  Jus as an FYI if you are still shopping.

Those are some nice bikes. And a deal makes it even sweeter...I say dump the man and do the Iron by yourself as well!!How else can train for your Disney marathon without doing the full ironman prior to it?  Wink

Kudos on the situps - I need to get back on that schedule.  I think I'm on track still, since I got to start in week three.....

I've done the craigslist flip for profit a couple times as well, once with a stroller (that I regret selling, another story) and a Kelty kid carrier.  Though I'd have to say my wife loves me more for my comedic genius

Suzy--- Congrats on the workout yesterday!  You are going to rock it!  Your attitude, spirits, and confidence has changed greatly over the past month or so!  Really looking forward to cheering you from afar in your quest for the 1/2!

Tracy--- New bike??? Uh oh!!! Are you going to be ok if it is not pink?  How is your Doug feeling about you have 2 bikes?! Jealous?  Good call on night riding it for Savageman.  Not only a hilly course, but a tri bike will work your muscles differently and will take some time to get used to.

Trevor--- 1st off Congrats on the job thing (I know I am a week late on this), the sit-ups, and "flipping" that stroller!  Flipping that stroller will help cover all your expensive habits!

So cool on the new bike!!  Between you and Kim, you have got me thinking again!!  I will check out the Trek Equinox, but I will probably have to suck it up and go custom.  I have visions of that Parlee dancing in my head, but I think I will need to work a few more hours if I pull that trigger.  Otherwise, I can always go back to my standby ti Seven or Serrotta.  Neither will look as cool as your tricked out tri bike, but given my size, that's life!!

Tony and Sam--feel better soon!

Really a crappy day at work. So far two co-workers have been told they are not in the plans for the new organization. They can stick around today and tomorrow if they need/want to. It's weird when you've been told that they have been terminated, then 30 minutes later they come back to their desk. Both older folks that had been here forever. Financially they will be taken care of/early retirement type jazz, but it must be hard for them when they've been hre for over 20 years, and now gone.

To relieve the stress of today, I am going out to a bit of running from Week 3 of my 1/2 mary plan!!

Hey guys!  I'm backSmile.  We had some bad storms here on Monday and our phone (landline), TV and internet all went out.  We've got the internet back now and the DirecTV guy just finished fixing that, but our phones are fried - good thing we have cell phones.  I haven't had time to go back over all the posts (I'll try to get to that tonight) but wanted to let you know that I got my RR up from Sunday.  It went OK.  The swim went better than expected, although still slow, but the bike and run were hard!  I was hoping to finish around 2hr 15min and it took only slightly longer than that - 2hr 21min - so I'm happy with that.  If I do this one again next year, I'll definitely need a lot more hill training between now and then!

I'll be back later!
Janet

I don't do them either.  I got tired of getting water up my nose.  Besides, there aren't flip turns in the open water so I figured it wasn't that important.  I can't pull off that level of coolness in the pool.

I don't do flip turns for all of the reasons listed so far AND I get dizzy after doing too many in a row.

So where is our Weds. morning cheerleader sending out the race roll call post for the weekend?  I actually have a race although it may be quite pathetic since I will be recovering from this stomach bug.

Here I am!!!  Who is racing this weekend? what length? where? what are your goals?????

I am a little pre-occupied today.   Cannot remember if I mentioned the woman who was pulled out of Lake Monona on Sunday or not.  She was training for IM WI on the course and suddenly vanished. She was with five people, but of course they were swimming and didn't notice she had fallen behind.  Fisherman dragged her out.   Her family took her off life support today and are donating all her organs. She leaves behind two very little kids, a husband, a mother and father.  I didn't know her personally, but we share the same friends.  I'm just devasted.

Awesome, Tracy!!!  I went for a fitting for a new tri bike yesterday, and we were initially thinking Guru Magis based on my size and budget...but it only comes with the ability for a seat tube water bottle holder!  Do you guys think that should be a deal breaker?  The other option is building up a Seven frame with tri bike seat angle/configuration...this is more expensive and non-aero tubing.  Unfortunately due to being shorter than most, sorry Suzy, I have to go the custom route.  Would you guys go for the Guru even though it only allows for the one bottle holder?  I can still use my aerodrink set up and I guess I can look into the XLab behind the seat system...the more I think about this, (and write this), the more this makes sense.

I also found out that based on the computrainer readings, my efficiency is only in the 40 percentile!!! I have lots to improve upon in terms of bike strength.  I really need to focus on the pull part of the pedal stroke and not push so much with my quads!  Do any of you with computrainers feel that being able to get that immediate feedback has improved your efficiency?  I was able to move the graph up 5 or 6 percent just by concentrating and looking at the graph, but as soon as I got distracted it went right back down.  Of course, one legged drills would probably help a lot, too.

Great job, Janet!

So sorry Suzy, that is just so very sad.  I think as others have mentioned, it is a somewhat risky sport that we have chosen, and we all do our very best to be as careful as possible, but maybe it does make a case for having someone as a designated safety person when doing OWS.  I don't really know how feasible that is...as both you and I and others here have probably gone out sort of on our own and have been watched from a distance.  Very sobering.
