Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just got back from the most difficult swim session I have had in a long while. I changed some of the structure of my swim workouts and today was the first day. Nothing out of the ordinary, except as I left this morning my regular swim trunks were MIA, so I grabbed a pair from the drawer, well I grabbed a pair of board shorts that have 2 cargo pockets on them. Since I have lost some weight and not been out much this year to wear them, they liked to slide down during the workout. After about 400 yards I figured out that it was the shorts that were making the workout seem that much harder. I had to fight for every second of the sets. Looks like I found a new way to build some strength in my shoulders every once in a while. |

Kim, Suzy, Rob... oh and Birdy too (5th in AG with a 2:30 Oly at Chelanman) Like everyone else, can't wait for the RRs! Mark, excellent job on knocking out a 100 miler! Huge accomplishment! Make sure you give yourself a good recovery: hopefully you had some quality carbs and protein afterward to repair your muscles, and then maybe plan on a VERY light spin tomorrow to help flush out your legs. Congrats to Birdy on the AG placement! He told me he was a 2:30 and sounded not happy about it. (harumph) Funny, I think on Friday he said he expected to do about a 2:30. Nothing like knowing your body, eh? QUOTE] Thanks.... AG Placement--- Yes this would have happened just finishing. Not sure how many people in AG, but I guess the way I look at it is how I did personally against my ability. Swim- 2 minutes slower than normal.... Bike was great, and run was 6 + minutes slower than normal....Given the fact I have another hernia I knew going into it that the run was going to be slower so I just "got through it" with what felt comfortable.... Funny story of the weekend- Leaving T2 you have to run up a little hill and at the top was the family/friends cheering squad!! I got up there and stopped to kiss Kim's belly.... Everyone was ohhhing and ahhhing..... Ryan to turns Kim and says out loud "Honey who was that guy?" That has to be the funniest post of the year in the MG!!! That Ryan...a true LOL moment. Wish I could have seen people's faces. |

Seemed like I was fighting to get forward movement! Oops -- this posted without my content in it. Sorry. Anyway, I'm sure Linda (Havin'Fun) can weigh in here with similar tales... but as young swimmers, we always trained in nylon suits (raced in lycra -- this was back in the "olden" days before the high-tech fancy suits/jammers they use now). We also wore 2-3 suits at a time. And if suits word out and got holes, they did not get retired, they just became top layers to make more drag. We were always quite a sight -- looked like a bunch of bag-lady swimmers. But hey, come shave/taper/lycra skinsuit time, we were FAST and STREAMLINED!!! So good job, guys, getting in a good baggy-suited workout!! Edited by kkcbelle 2010-07-19 3:57 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mett - 2010-07-19 7:35 AM Ok I am refreshed and a little less sore. The 100 mile ride was crazy, We were 36 miles in to doing a 75 and I felt great so I said lets push it. We stopped at mile 50 to refuel and I was regretting it then. My legs were shot and I was dog tired. But there is no way back but on the bike so...I had to ride. Up until this one my biggest ride was 50 miles and considering I just started in the middle of April when I got this bike I thought I was over my head for sure. I went through so much gu, gatorade, water and cliff bars that I almost emptied my whole stash. I was able to stay hydrated and I think the last 15 - 20 miles we kept an 18mph pace. At that point I was in a different world. I have parts of my body hurting that I did not know could hurt. OVerall I feel awesome that I did it, all the people I know think I am crazy which makes it that much more enjoyable. Grats to all the racers this weekend. Going back a bit... I thought this was totally worth a comment. Again, congratulations on the century ride. I just have to highlight how much difference it is being 36 miles into a ride, vs., oh, 75 or 80 miles into a ride!! LOL! Many times around 30-40 miles I feel like I can ride ALLLLLLL day (and do a solid run later). Something after about 60 miles makes the miles start to drag on -- you feel it in your legs, your butt, your nutrition and hydration... Totally awesome that you guys held a steady pace for the end of the ride. I think there is a LOT to be said for "ignorance is bliss" going into it. So when's the next century? Hope all of the speedy racers are recovering well! |

Building speed is something that will require some time. If you are looking to increase speed over that distance, you have to be prepared for smaller gains since it is more of an endurance ride. If you are looking to build longer speed, having a proper base is the first step, then you can start adding long intervals of increased speed. Say 20 minutes at a higher speed, then 5 minutes recovery. Rinse and repeat. There are 2 ways to approach getting faster, some build distance then work on speed, others work speed and then build distance from there. I am not sure there is a "right" way to do it, but I prefer building speed first then adding the distance. You could look at Jorge's 14 week winter cycling plan. It's goal is to raise your FTP, starts off by working very short intervals 30 seconds to 1 minute, then builds from there. Every few weeks it re-evaluates your 5 and 20 minute power tests and then begins to build your FTP with longer intervals. I am looking forward to this winter and being able to do the entire plan since I started late last year. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What is Jorge's plan? I dont have any type of instrument to measure power right now. The power meters are way out of my price range at the moment. I am down for any type of plan to help me out. My buddies ride in the 20-22 mph range on most distances so my goal is to be able to hang with them next spring/summer. I know I have a lot of work to do but I think I can pull 17-18 on a 50 mile ride now so I am getting better. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello all, still here. Just we are at my dad's house in Minnesota, haven't had much online time. Great riding, running and swimming here.. Sam and I tried to do an OWS but got kind of freaked out, very dark water, clean but dark, couldn't see anything, just seems different when there are a ton of other people in the water vs. just you. LOL, did a 2 hr bike yesterday amazing how far here you can see, everything is pancake flat. Off to another park today and to play some golf. Will be home this weekend and back to work on monday so back to normal posting routines. Hope everyone had great races this weekend. I'll catch up soon. |
