Mark,  building speed and doing century rides are all wonderful accomplishments, but don't loose sight of the larger picture.  You want to race triathlons, not bike races, therefore there are 3 ( possibly 4 if you count nutrition) areas to focus on.   I've learned the hard way there is no such thing as a killer bike ride but a bad run and a successful race.   I would focus on perfecting your form in each discipline and then slowly building up the distances.  Form and strength will allow for endurance where as distance and speed alone will only support injuries.   I know it is hard but be patient and steady and you will be surprised at the improvements.

I am trying my best at doing them all. My buddy is more in to bike riding and I enjoy the rides w/ them so I just want to make sure I improve in this area as well so I can keep riding with them. I am really struggling w/ the run still but I think it is getting ok. My weight is coming down pretty nice so I dont think it will be long until I can do a 5k in one shot.

Mark,
I did Jorge's winter cycling plan last year and based my rpe on heart rate, using a heart rate monitor.  It was a good plan and I was successful with improving my speed and strength.  I will do it again this winter and we can discuss it here in our MG.  Have a great day!
Linda

I ride on bike trails w/ my headset. I still get a little freaked out on the roads at the moment.

Spoken like a pro!  It is good to see you are excited about it Mark, but take it easy so to not over train.

dalessit - 2010-07-20 9:27 AM Hello all, still here.  Just we are at my dad's house in Minnesota, haven't had much online time.

Great riding, running and swimming here..  Sam and I tried to do an OWS but got kind of freaked out, very dark water, clean but dark, couldn't see anything, just seems different when there are a ton of other people in the water vs. just you.

LOL, did a 2 hr bike yesterday amazing how far here you can see, everything is pancake flat.

Off to another park today and to play some golf.

Will be home this weekend and back to work on monday so back to normal posting routines.  Hope everyone had great races this weekend.  I'll catch up soon.

What part of MN are you at?  Pancake flat in areas, some big climbs in others.

Slightly off-topic question:

I got a notice today in the mail to subscribe to Triathlete magazine.  Any opinions on whether this magazine is worth the price?  I already get Triathlon Life from USAT.

Thanks.

jvanis - 2010-07-19 1:29 PM I just got back from the most difficult swim session I have had in a long while.  I changed some of the structure of my swim workouts and today was the first day.  Nothing out of the ordinary, except as I left this morning my regular swim trunks were MIA, so I grabbed a pair from the drawer, well I grabbed a pair of board shorts that have 2 cargo pockets on them.

Since I have lost some weight and not been out much this year to wear them, they liked to slide down during the workout.  After about 400 yards I figured out that it was the shorts that were making the workout seem that much harder.  I had to fight for every second of the sets.  Looks like I found a new way to build some strength in my shoulders every once in a while.

Try using a wet suit with the top off. Talk about a drag.

Meh. It's ok. They tend to have the same articles on a quarterly rotation ("How to improve your run split! You should eat these foods! 5 common transition mistakes!"), and more and more of the magazine is filled with ads. Their "reviews" are always positive and generally accompanied by a full page ad for the same item on the opposite page, which makes you wonder about their objectivity. But hey, they do have glossy pictures of bikes and every once in a while, one of their feature articles makes for a good read.

I really like the aero-mullet!!! And the New Balance cycling shoes complete the look. Oh yeah the aero-Poland Springs water bottle is a nice touch too.

To piggy back on this, I like seeing the new gear out there.  Granted you have to take the reviews with a grain of salt, but it does advertise the new stuff available.  Plus I like reading about the races they advertise.  But if I had to choose amongst the magazines I get more out of Bicycling and Runners World.

I subscribe and I like the magazine quite a bit.  Unlike Tracy, I am not as into the gear and tech section, but I really dig the nutrition and training section.  Well worth the cost to me.

Here's my PSA for the day....Keep the body healthy at all costs.

I have a very talented triathlete friend who was training for her 4th IM WI.  She's missed roll down twice by 1 person the last two years. She was doing the Door County HIM this weekend and was in a position to take OA female at the 8m mark of the run when she blew out her foot and couldn't run or walk one more step.  She's on crutches, out of this year's IM  and who knows how much longer after that.  All because she continued to train through some serious pain....DUMB, right?

PSA over.
